Activate the card before using it
Read the label on the new card and follow the activation instructions printed there. Use only the issuer’s official activation method. If the label directs you online, begin at the company’s official website and check that the card issuer’s name matches the name printed on the card.
Have the physical card and the primary cardholder’s information ready. You may be asked for details from the card, the cardholder’s ZIP code, and another identity check. Enter the information exactly as it appears on the account.
After activation, sign the back if the card has a signature panel. Keep any confirmation on the screen until you know the card works. If activation fails:
- Check each digit and the expiration date before trying again.
- Make sure you are activating the newest card, not an expired or replaced one.
- Ask the primary cardholder to complete the process if you are an authorized user.
- Use the verified support contact printed on the card when repeated attempts fail.
Check the card’s balance and recent activity
Sign in through the issuer’s official account page to see the current balance, available credit, recent transactions, and payment status. If you have not created online access, choose the registration option and have the card nearby. The site may ask you to confirm your identity before showing account details.
The current balance and available credit are not always the same. A pending purchase can reduce what is available before it becomes part of the posted balance. A recent payment may also take time to appear. Review both pending and posted activity before deciding that a transaction or payment is missing.
If you cannot sign in, use the username or password recovery option instead of opening another account. You can also check the latest statement, but it will show the balance as of the statement date rather than current activity. Report any transaction you do not recognize through the secure account area or the verified contact information on the back of the card.
Is this a gift card?
Check the wording on the front and back of the card. A credit card account and a prepaid gift card use different balance and support systems. A gift card usually refers to a stored balance, while a credit card shows an amount owed and available credit.
Do not enter gift-card details into a credit-card application or account page. Follow the activation and balance instructions printed on that specific gift card. If the card has no readable instructions, contact the retailer or issuer named on it using contact information from its original packaging or the card itself.
