Cancel a Kindle book purchase

Sign in to the Amazon account used for the purchase at the company’s official website. Use a browser if the needed controls do not appear in the Kindle app.

  1. Open your account menu and choose Content Library or Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Select Books and find the title.
  3. Open the actions menu beside the book.
  4. Choose Return for Refund, if that option appears.
  5. Select a reason and confirm the return.

Amazon may remove the book from the Kindle library after the return is processed. If the return option is missing, check that you signed in with the account that bought the book. Also confirm that you selected the purchased edition rather than a sample or a title obtained through a subscription.

A completed Kindle purchase usually cannot be handled through the regular Cancel Items screen used for shipments. If self-service return is unavailable, contact Amazon Customer Service and ask it to review the digital order.

Cancel a Kindle pre-order or a Kindle device order

If the book has not been released, open Your Orders or Digital Orders, locate the pre-order, and choose Cancel Items or Cancel Pre-order. Select the title, give a reason if asked, and confirm. Check the order status afterward instead of relying only on the button press.

For an order containing a physical Kindle device, use Your Orders and select Cancel Items beside that shipment. Cancellation may no longer be offered once processing has advanced. In that case, open the order to see the available delivery or return choices.

Before contacting support, have these details ready:

  • The title or Kindle model
  • The order number
  • The date of the order
  • The email address on the Amazon account
  • A short explanation that the order was accidental or is no longer wanted

Kindle customer support availability

Support availability can vary by contact method and by the issue selected, so use the options displayed in Amazon Customer Service instead of relying on fixed hours from an unofficial page. Sign in, choose the Kindle book or device order, select the closest problem, and review the contact choices currently offered.

If chat or a callback is not displayed, try the self-service order steps first and check again later. Do not give an account password, payment details, or a verification code to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. Amazon may ask you to confirm account information through its own signed-in support flow.
