How to scratch and redeem a gift card

A physical gift card may have a covered PIN or claim code on the back. Scratch only the coated area. Use the edge of a coin and rub lightly so you do not damage the numbers underneath.

Before redeeming it, have the card, any receipt, and the account you want to use ready. Then:

1. Check the card for the store or service name.
2. Go to the issuer’s official site using the company’s official website, or use the redemption instructions printed on the card.
3. Enter the card number and the scratched-off PIN or claim code in the matching fields.
4. Review the characters carefully, then submit the code.
5. Keep the card and receipt until the credit appears and you have used it.

A gift card code is different from a mobile recharge code. Enter it only in the system named on the card. A code for one issuer normally cannot be redeemed with another company.

If the scratch code is damaged or unreadable

Stop scratching as soon as the coating is gone. More scraping can remove the printed characters. Look at the code under bright light and try to identify commonly confused characters, such as zero and the letter O.

If part of the code is still unreadable, contact the issuer through the customer-support details printed on the card or receipt. Be ready to provide the visible card number, the place and approximate date of purchase, and clear photos of the front, back, and receipt. Do not post those photos publicly.

An “invalid” message can also mean that the card was not activated at checkout, the code was typed incorrectly, or it has already been redeemed. Ask support to check the card’s activation and redemption status. Avoid repeated guesses because some systems may temporarily block further attempts.

Protect the code from gift card scams

Treat the scratched code like cash. Anyone who gets both the card number and PIN may be able to use the balance.

• Do not send the code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
• Do not share photos showing the back of the card.
• Do not provide a code to pay a bill, settle a threat, claim a prize, or prove your identity.
• Check a balance only through the issuer’s official site or the instructions printed on the card.

If you already shared the code, contact the card issuer immediately. Keep the card, receipt, messages, usernames, and screenshots. Ask whether the balance remains and whether the card can be secured. If someone pressured or deceived you, report the incident to the relevant consumer-protection or law-enforcement agency.
