How to Sign Out of the Gmail App

To sign out of the Gmail app on a phone or tablet, remove the Google account from the device. The mobile Gmail app does not provide the same simple Sign out button available in a computer web browser.
Can You Sign Out of the Gmail App?
The Gmail mobile app treats signing out as removing the account from the device. If you are looking for how to log out of the Gmail app, you will usually see a removal option instead of a button labeled Sign out.
Removing an account means disconnecting that Google account from the phone or tablet. It does not permanently delete the Google account, Gmail address, messages, or stored account data.
This difference matters because the account may be used by several Google apps on the same device. Before you sign out of the Gmail app, check whether you still need that account in another Google app.
How to Sign Out of Gmail on Android
To sign out of the Gmail app on Android, remove the Google account through the account menu in Gmail:
- Open the Gmail app on the Android phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Manage accounts on this device.
- Select the Google account you want to remove.
- Tap Remove account near the bottom of the screen.
- Confirm the removal if Android asks you to do so.
These steps sign out of Gmail by removing the selected account from the Android device. Because Android connects a Google account to the device, removal also signs that account out of other Google apps on the same device.
If more than one account is listed, verify the email address before tapping Remove account. Removing the wrong account can interrupt access to its email and other connected Google services on that device.
How to Sign Out of Gmail on iPhone or iPad
To sign out of the Gmail app on an iPhone or iPad, remove the account from the device through Gmail:
- Open the Gmail app on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Manage accounts on this device.
- Find the Google account you want to sign out of.
- Tap Remove from this device.
- Confirm the removal if prompted.
The account will no longer be available in Gmail on that iPhone or iPad. Removing it can also sign the account out of other Google apps on the device. The Google account itself remains active and can still be used on another device.
How to Switch Gmail Accounts Without Signing Out
You do not need to log out of the Gmail app just to read mail from another account. If both accounts have already been added, switch between them instead:
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap the email address or profile picture for the account you want to use.
- Wait for Gmail to display the selected account’s inbox.
Messages and inboxes remain separate when you switch accounts. Check the profile picture or email address before reading or sending a message so you know which account is active.
Switching accounts is the better choice when you still want notifications and quick access for every account already added to the app. Account removal is appropriate when you no longer want that Google account accessible from the device.
What Happens After You Remove the Account?
Removing a Google account from a phone or tablet signs the account out on that device. It does not permanently delete the Google account or erase the Gmail mailbox stored with Google.
- Gmail for that account is no longer accessible in the app on the device.
- Other Google apps on the same device may also sign out of that account.
- Email and account data remain available when you sign in on another device.
- Other Google accounts on the phone or tablet remain in place unless you remove them separately.
- You can add the removed account to the device again later by signing in.
Account removal and account deletion are different actions. Removal disconnects the device; permanent deletion closes the account and can erase its data. Do not select an option that says Delete Google Account when your goal is only to sign out of the Gmail mobile app.
What to Do If You Cannot Sign Out
If the expected account-removal option is missing or does not work, check these common causes:
- Wrong menu: Open Gmail, tap the profile picture, and choose Manage accounts on this device. Manage your Google Account opens account settings and is not the same command.
- Outdated Gmail app: Update Gmail through the device’s app store, reopen it, and check the profile menu again.
- Managed account: A work or school administrator may control whether an account can be removed. Follow the organization’s instructions or contact its administrator.
- Device restrictions: Parental controls, a managed device profile, or security settings may block account changes. The person or organization managing the device may need to approve removal.
- Temporary app problem: Close and reopen Gmail, then restart the phone or tablet before trying the steps again.
- Different labels: App or operating-system updates may change the wording slightly. Look for Manage accounts on this device, Remove account, or Remove from this device.
If Gmail closes before you can use the menu, open the device’s account settings and look for the Google account associated with Gmail. Remove only the intended account, and read each confirmation carefully so you do not choose permanent account deletion.
