ID.me Password Reset and Login Help
What Your ID.me Login ID Is
Your ID.me login ID is the email address connected to your ID.me Wallet. It is not a separate username, membership number, or identity document number. Your password is the private phrase you created for the wallet.
If you are asking, “What is my ID and password?” first identify the email address you used when creating your ID.me Wallet. It may be a personal, work, or school address. Check your saved passwords or earlier ID.me messages for clues, but do not assume that the email used with a government agency is necessarily your ID.me login ID.
If ID.me shows a partial email hint for an existing verified wallet, compare it with addresses you have used before. Use the recognized address as your ID.me login. If you do not recognize the hint, contact ID.me Support instead of creating another wallet.
Your login ID and password have different roles: the email identifies the wallet, while the password helps protect it. ID.me will not display your existing password. If you forgot ID and password details, recover the email first or ask Support for account-access help, then reset the password.
How to Reset Your ID.me Password
The ID.me password reset process requires access to the email address connected to the wallet. Start from the official ID.me sign-in page, reached through ID.me’s main site or by selecting “Sign in with ID.me” on the organization’s official site.
- Enter the email address connected to your ID.me Wallet and select Continue.
- Select “Forgot password?” on the password screen.
- Enter the wallet email address again and continue.
- Open the password-reset message sent by ID.me. Check the spam or junk folder if it is missing.
- Use the reset button in that message, or enter its confirmation code on the browser screen where you requested the reset.
- Enter the new password twice and continue.
Use the newest reset message if you requested more than one. Reset messages and their links can expire. Return to the “Forgot password?” screen and choose the option to resend verification when necessary.
After you reset your ID.me password, sign in with the same email address and the new password. You must also complete multi-factor authentication. A password reset does not remove that security step.
How to Sign In With Your Login ID and Password
Reach the official sign-in screen from ID.me’s own site or from the official agency or service you want to use. Look for a button labeled “Sign in,” “Sign in with ID.me,” or “Verify with ID.me.” Avoid sign-in pages opened from unexpected messages or search advertisements.
- Confirm that the page identifies ID.me and that your browser does not show a security warning.
- Enter your ID.me login ID, which is the email address associated with your wallet.
- Select Continue, then enter your ID.me password.
- Select Sign in and complete the requested multi-factor authentication.
- Follow the remaining prompts to return to the agency or service.
Do not create a new wallet merely because your ID.me login and password do not work. An additional wallet can cause duplicate-account problems. Use “Forgot password?” or the official recovery process for the wallet you already have.
If You Cannot Access Your Email or Phone
If you cannot access the wallet email but remember your password, ID.me says you may still sign in. Enter the email address associated with the wallet, even though you cannot open that inbox. Enter the password and complete multi-factor authentication using a method you can still access.
If you cannot receive authentication messages because your number or device changed, use the ID.me Help Center article for resetting an MFA method. Follow the recovery prompts shown there. This is separate from an ID.me forgot password request.
If you cannot access the registered email and have also forgotten the password, the email-based reset cannot be completed normally. Use the ID.me Help Center’s Contact Support page and select Start Chat. This option is intended for people who cannot sign in. Tell the assistant that you need to recover your ID.me account, then answer the account-recovery questions.
Do not send anyone your password, authentication code, or recovery code. Support may ask questions needed to locate and protect the wallet, but those secret credentials should remain private.
Why Your Login May Not Work
The login ID is wrong. Try the email connected to your ID.me Wallet, not an agency username or an unrelated email address.
The password was mistyped. Check capitalization, unwanted spaces, and your phone’s automatic corrections. Use the password-reset process instead of repeatedly guessing.
The reset message is missing. Check spam or junk, confirm the email spelling, and request a new message from the “Forgot password?” screen.
Multi-factor authentication failed. A correct ID.me login and password will not bypass verification. Use the official MFA recovery guidance if you lost the device or contact method.
The wallet is locked after unsuccessful attempts. Use the recovery link displayed in ID.me’s locked-wallet message, enter the wallet email, and follow the instructions in the unlock email.
You reached a different wallet. If ID.me displays an existing-wallet email hint, use that address. Contact Support if the hint is unfamiliar.
The browser is causing an error. Update it, clear its cache and cookies, or try another supported browser or device.
How to Contact ID.me Support
Open the official ID.me Help Center and find “Contact Support.” If you can sign in, select the support option, sign in to your wallet, choose the issue that best matches the problem, and submit a clear description.
If you cannot sign in, choose “Start Chat” on the Contact Support page. The chat can guide you through wallet recovery without requiring an initial sign-in.
Be ready to provide the email address used with ID.me, your name, the type of sign-in problem, whether you know the wallet password, whether you attempted an ID.me password reset, whether you can access the registered email, and whether MFA reaches your device. Include the exact error message and the step where it appeared. Never include your password or a verification or recovery code.
