GOV.UK One Login and Government Gateway Sign In

Updated 2026-08-15 · 969 words

Official Government Gateway Login

Start from the official GOV.UK website and search for the government service you need, such as Self Assessment or another HMRC service. Open that service’s sign-in page and select the Government Gateway option.

Check that the page displays GOV.UK branding and that your browser shows a secure connection. Do not enter details on a page reached through an unexpected email, text message, advertisement, or social media post. Government departments do not need you to use a commercial account service for a gov gateway login.

If you are unsure about a page, close it and begin again from the GOV.UK home page. The correct route may differ by department, so it is safer to start with the service you want than to search for a generic login form.

How to Sign In

Have your Government Gateway user ID, password, and the device used for security codes ready. A user ID is normally a string of numbers issued when the account was created; it is not necessarily your email address.

  1. Open the relevant service on the official GOV.UK website.
  2. Select its sign-in or start option.
  3. Choose Government Gateway if more than one sign-in method appears.
  4. Enter the Government Gateway user ID and password connected to that service.
  5. Complete any requested security check. Depending on the account, a code may arrive by text message, voice call, or an authenticator app.
  6. Review the service name after signing in to make sure you reached the intended account.

Some services may also ask you to confirm your identity. Follow only the instructions shown in the official service. Do not approve a security request that you did not initiate, and never disclose a complete password or security code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Recover Your Sign-In Details

On the official sign-in screen, look below the credential fields for the option saying that you have forgotten your Government Gateway user ID or password. The exact recovery checks depend on the service and the security already attached to your account.

First search the inbox used when the account was created. The original user ID may be in a Government Gateway registration email. Check archived and spam folders, but do not follow suspicious links in old messages.

To recover a user ID, the official process may ask for the registered email address, an emailed code, the account password, and a code from the device used for multi-factor authentication. To reset a password, you will generally need the user ID, access to the registered email account, and any security information requested on screen.

If you have lost both details, cannot use the registered email address, or cannot complete the security check, use the help route for the specific department or service. Do not repeatedly create accounts unless its official guidance tells you to do so. A new account may not automatically contain services or records linked to the old one.

Fix Common Login Problems

  • Incorrect details: Check for typing errors and unwanted spaces. Make sure you are using a Government Gateway user ID rather than GOV.UK One Login credentials or details for another account.
  • No verification code: Confirm that the correct phone, app, or other method is being checked. On an HMRC access-code screen, look for the help option and follow it to change or troubleshoot the code method.
  • Locked access: Stop making repeated attempts and follow the message shown on the official page. Use the recovery option if you are unsure of the credentials. Support staff may not be able to bypass an automatic security lock.
  • Browser trouble: Refresh once, then try a private window or a current browser. Allow essential cookies, disable autofill if it inserts old details, and avoid using a saved bookmark that opens an outdated page.
  • Unavailable service: Check the official service-status or known-problems page for the department. Do not rely on an unofficial status site or assume when access will return.

If the gov gateway sign in works for one service but not another, the second service may not be enrolled on that account. Read that service’s own access guidance before changing account details.

Government Gateway and GOV.UK One Login

Government Gateway and GOV.UK One Login are separate sign-in systems. GOV.UK One Login uses an email address and password, while Government Gateway uses its issued user ID and password. One set of credentials cannot automatically be entered into the other system.

GOV.UK One Login is gradually replacing older sign-in methods, including Government Gateway, but it does not yet cover every service. Existing HMRC customers should continue using Government Gateway unless the official HMRC journey prompts them to use or create GOV.UK One Login.

Begin with the government service you need and follow the choice displayed there. If it offers Government Gateway, select it for an existing Gateway account. If it directs you to GOV.UK One Login, use the email address and password registered with One Login. Having GOV.UK One Login for another department does not by itself mean that an existing Government Gateway account has moved.

Contact Official Support

Support is normally provided by the department running the service, not by a single general Government Gateway team. Return to the service’s page on GOV.UK and look for labels such as “Get help,” “Contact,” “Problems signing in,” or “Technical support.”

For HMRC access, use the official HMRC online-services help page. It may offer a digital assistant and, when available, a route to an adviser. For GOV.UK One Login, use the official One Login help section. Other departments may have their own account-support process.

Before contacting support, note the service name, the step that failed, the exact error message, and whether the problem concerns the user ID, password, or security code. Do not send your password or a live verification code. Support should not ask you to reveal either in full.
