Google Chat Download for PC
Google Chat works on a Windows PC in a supported web browser or as an installable progressive web app through Google Chrome. For an official Google Chat download for PC, install the web app from Google Chat in Chrome; Google does not provide a separate Windows installer.
What Google Chat options are available for a PC?
You can use Google Chat on a Windows PC in these official ways:
Google Chat in a browser: Open {site} in a supported browser. Nothing is installed, and Google Chat remains in a browser tab.
Google Chat progressive web app: Install Google Chat from Chrome. A progressive web app, or PWA, is a website that opens in its own app-style window and can appear in the Windows Start menu.
Google Chat inside Gmail: If Chat is enabled for the account, Gmail may show Chat in its left navigation area.
The installable option is not a traditional Windows program downloaded as an executable file. Google identifies it as the Google Chat standalone app, but it is a Chrome-based PWA. Google also states that there is no Google Chat Chrome extension.
How do I download Google Chat for PC?
Use Google Chrome to install the official PWA. Avoid third-party download pages, installers, and browser extensions that claim to provide Google Chat.
Open Google Chrome on the PC.
Open {site} and sign in to Google Chat.
Look at the right side of Chrome’s address bar for an Install icon.
Select the Install icon, then select Install again.
If the icon is absent, open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select Install Google Chat.
After installation, open the Windows Start menu and select Chat.
No installer file should need to be downloaded separately. If a search result asks you to run an unrelated setup file, leave that page and use the installation control built into Chrome.
How do I sign in to Google Chat on a PC?
Open Google Chat in the browser, from the Windows Start menu, or through Gmail.
Select Sign in if the sign-in page appears.
Enter the email address for the Google Account that contains the conversations you need.
Enter the account password and complete any verification requested by Google.
Check the profile image or initial after Chat opens. Switch accounts if the displayed email address is not the intended personal, work, or school account.
A work or school administrator can disable Chat or limit access. If the correct managed account opens but Chat is unavailable, contact the organization’s Google Workspace administrator. Installing the app does not bypass an account restriction.
What are the system and browser requirements for Google Chat on a PC?
Google’s published installation requirements for the Chat PWA are:
Google Chrome version 73 or later.
Permission to install Chrome apps and extensions on the computer.
Chrome must be open while the installed Google Chat PWA is in use, although Chrome does not have to be the default browser.
An active internet connection and a Google Account that can access Chat.
Current Chrome requirements determine which Windows computers can run the PWA. Google supports current Chrome on Windows 10 or later for compatible Intel processors and Windows 11 or later for compatible ARM processors. Keep Chrome updated rather than relying only on the minimum Chat version.
For browser access, Google Account sign-in supports current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera on a PC. JavaScript and cookies must be allowed for sign-in and normal operation. Internet Explorer is not supported for Chat. The installable Google Chat PWA requires Chrome even when browser access works elsewhere.
How do I fix Google Chat download and installation problems?
The Install option is missing: Confirm that Chat is open in Chrome and Chrome is updated. If a Chat shortcut was previously created, Google says the PWA may already be installed, so check the Windows Start menu for Chat.
Installation is blocked: A Windows policy, Chrome policy, security program, or managed-account rule may prevent app installation. On a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether Chrome app installation is allowed.
Google Chat will not load: Check the internet connection, reload Chat, and temporarily test in a private browsing window. If Chat works there, disable browser extensions one at a time to find the conflict. Security software or blocked site permissions can also interfere.
Sign-in keeps looping: Make sure JavaScript and cookies are enabled. Clear Google site data in the browser, restart Chrome, and sign in again. Also confirm that the browser is not using an unsupported extension or unusually strict privacy setting.
Notifications do not appear: Open Google Chat settings and enable chat notifications. Allow notifications and idle detection when the browser asks, then confirm that Windows notifications are enabled and Do not disturb is off. Check the individual conversation or space if only some alerts are missing.
How do I uninstall or remove Google Chat from a Windows PC?
Open Google Chrome.
Open Chrome’s page that lists installed apps.
Right-click the Google Chat app.
Select Uninstall, then select Remove.
If only a pinned icon remains, right-click it on the taskbar or Start menu and select the unpin option. Removing the PWA or shortcut does not delete the Google Account, conversations, or access to Google Chat in a browser.
