Reset Your ID.me Password

To begin an ID.me password reset, open {site} and go to the sign-in page. Have access to the email inbox connected to your ID.me Wallet. You will also need your multi-factor authentication method when you sign in after the reset.

  1. Enter the email address connected to your wallet and select Continue.
  2. Select Forgot password?
  3. Enter the email address again and select Continue.
  4. Look for the message titled “ID.me - Your password reset link.”
  5. Select Reset your password in the message. You can instead enter the confirmation code from the message on the browser screen and select Confirm.
  6. Enter the new password twice, then select Continue.

A confirmation should appear when the change is complete. Sign in with the new password and complete multi-factor authentication.

These are also the steps to use if you previously signed in through a social account and need to create an ID.me password. If you are asking “how do I reset my ID.me password,” start with the email connected to your existing wallet rather than creating another account.

If You Forgot Your ID.me Email Address

The self-service reset form requires an email address already connected to your wallet. ID.me does not publish a separate lookup tool that reveals a wallet email from personal information.

If you forgot your ID.me email, first review inboxes that you control for earlier ID.me messages. This can help you identify an address you previously used without exposing account information or bypassing security. Check personal and work inboxes that may legitimately belong to you.

If you recognize a possible address, enter it on the sign-in page. Follow the message shown there rather than repeatedly trying unrelated addresses. After accounts have officially been merged, ID.me says any email address on the merged wallet may be used to begin a password reset.

If you know the connected address but no longer have access to its inbox, that is different from an ID.me forgot email situation. If you still know the password, ID.me says you may be able to sign in using the connected address, even without inbox access, and then complete multi-factor authentication. If you do not know both the email and password, contact ID.me Support for account recovery.

If the Reset Email Does Not Arrive

The official guidance says a reset message may take up to 10 minutes to arrive. Check the spam, junk, promotions, and other filtered folders before requesting another message.

  • Confirm that you entered the complete email address correctly, including its spelling.
  • Search the inbox for ID.me and the reset message title.
  • Wait for the first request to arrive before selecting Resend my verification.
  • If you requested several messages, use only the newest one.
  • If messages from other senders are also missing, ask your email provider for help.

If the address is correct but no reset message appears, return to the Forgot password screen and select Resend my verification. Avoid rapid repeated requests because they can leave you with several links, and older links may no longer work. Follow the current troubleshooting prompts displayed by ID.me.

Problems Creating a New Password

ID.me reset links expire after 15 minutes. If a link is expired or reported as invalid, return to the Forgot password page, request another message, and open the latest message promptly. Do not reuse an older link after requesting a new one.

If a current link produces an error, update your browser and clear its cache, then restart the ID.me password reset. You can also use the confirmation code included in the reset message if the original browser screen still offers that option.

On the password screen, follow every requirement displayed beside the fields. ID.me’s official security guidance recommends a strong, unique password that is not used for another service. It recommends a passphrase made from unrelated words or a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, while avoiding predictable sequences and common patterns. The reset guidance does not publish a fixed length or character formula, so the on-screen checks are the authoritative requirements for your attempt.

Enter the same new password in both fields. If they do not match or the password fails an on-screen check, correct it before continuing. A password manager can generate and store a unique password.

Contact ID.me Support

Contact support when the IDme password reset process fails after you have used the newest link and followed the official troubleshooting steps. Support is also the correct route when you cannot access the connected inbox and do not know the password, or when you need help to recover an ID.me email.

Open {site}, enter the Help Center, and use its Contact Support option. On a recovery article, ID.me may direct you to select the chat bubble, state that you cannot sign in, answer the questions, and follow the instructions. A support request form may ask for your contact email, the email used with your wallet, your name, the sign-in problem, the recovery steps already attempted, and a description of the issue.

Provide accurate information and follow the official prompts. Depending on the access problem, an agent may require you to confirm ownership of the wallet. ID.me’s recovery guidance says this may involve confirming personal information or email, presenting an identity document, taking a live selfie, or joining a video call. Complete only the process ID.me presents through its verified support system.

Protect Your Account After Recovery

After you reset your ID.me password, update the saved login in your password manager or browser so an old password is not entered automatically. Remove outdated handwritten or unprotected copies.

  • Review the Profile area and make sure the listed email addresses are yours and remain accessible.
  • Review Sign In & Security and remove any unrecognized multi-factor authentication method only after another valid method is available.
  • Keep multi-factor authentication enabled and consider adding passkey MFA, which ID.me identifies as its safest supported MFA method.
  • Never share a multi-factor authentication code with anyone.
  • Use the recovered password only for ID.me.

These checks complete the recovery whether you searched for “ID.me forgot password,” “IDme forgot password,” “reset my ID.me password,” or “how to reset ID.me password.” They also reduce the chance that another ID.me password reset will be needed because of outdated stored details.
