Google Chat App for Mac: Download and Sign In

Google Chat works on a Mac in a web browser or as an official progressive web app installed through Google Chrome. Google does not provide a separate native macOS download; the installed version still uses Chrome to run.
Is There a Google Chat App for Mac?
The official Google Chat app for Mac is a progressive web app, often shortened to PWA. A progressive web app is a website installed so that it opens in its own app-like window.
You have three supported ways to use Google Chat on macOS:
- Open Google Chat directly in a supported web browser.
- Use Chat inside Gmail if Chat is enabled for your account.
- Install the Google Chat PWA through Chrome and open it from the Applications folder or Dock.
The Google Chat desktop app for Mac is not a separate native macOS program. Avoid websites offering an unofficial Google Chat for Mac download, installation package, or Chrome extension. Google states that there is no Google Chat Chrome extension.
How Do I Download Google Chat on a Mac?
To install Google Chat on a Mac, use Chrome and the installation control provided on the official Chat page. Chrome must remain available because it runs the installed PWA, although Chrome does not have to be your default browser.
- Open an up-to-date version of Google Chrome on the Mac.
- Open {site} and sign in to the Google account you want to use.
- Look at the right side of Chrome’s address bar for the Install icon.
- If the icon is not visible, open Chrome’s main menu and select Install Google Chat.
- Select Install when Chrome asks for confirmation.
- Open the Applications folder in Finder and select Chat.
If a Google Chat shortcut was previously created in Chrome, Chrome may have installed the PWA automatically. In that case, an additional Install option may not appear. Check the Applications folder for Chat before trying again.
These steps cover searches such as “google chat download mac,” “download google chat app for mac,” and “install google chat on mac.” No installation file from another download site is required.
How Do I Sign In to Google Chat on a Mac?
Google Chat requires a Google account. Personal Google accounts can use Chat, while access through a work or school account may depend on settings controlled by the organization.
- Open {site} in a supported browser, or open Chat from the Mac Applications folder if the PWA is installed.
- Select the Google account shown on the account chooser, or choose the option to use another account.
- Enter the email address for the correct personal, work, or school Google account.
- Complete Google’s normal sign-in prompts.
- Confirm that the intended account appears in Google Chat before starting or opening a conversation.
If several Google accounts are already signed in, check the profile picture or account menu. A missing conversation often means Google Chat opened under a different account, not that the conversation was deleted.
For a work or school account, the organization must enable Google Chat. Contact the Google Workspace administrator if Chat is missing, disabled, or unavailable after a successful Google account sign-in.
How Do I Add Google Chat to the Mac Dock?
The installed Google Chat PWA can be pinned to the macOS Dock for app-like access. Install the PWA through Chrome first; a normal browser tab cannot be pinned as a separate Chat app in the same way.
- Open Finder and select Applications.
- Find Chat in the Applications folder.
- Drag Chat to the preferred position in the Dock.
- Release it when the other Dock icons move apart.
- Select the Chat icon in the Dock to confirm that it opens correctly.
You can also open Chat first, control-click its Dock icon, select Options, and choose Keep in Dock. Removing the Dock icon later does not uninstall Google Chat.
Why Can’t I Install or Sign In to Google Chat on a Mac?
A missing installation control or failed sign-in usually points to the browser, account selection, site permissions, or an organization’s rules. Try these checks in order:
- Update Chrome, close it completely, reopen it, and load Google Chat again.
- Confirm that cookies are allowed for Google sign-in and Chat. Blocking all cookies can interrupt the account chooser or sign-in session.
- Temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, cookies, or page content, then reload Chat.
- If a requested Google sign-in window does not open, check the browser’s pop-up setting and allow the expected Google prompt.
- Try a private browsing window to test whether stored data or an extension is causing the problem.
- Make sure the correct Google account is selected. Sign out of an unintended account if necessary, then choose the intended account.
- For a managed Mac or work or school account, ask the administrator whether app installation, Google Chat, or required browser access is blocked.
If Chat opens but does not load conversations, check the Mac’s internet connection and refresh the page. Security software, network filters, and browser extensions can also prevent Chat from connecting.
How Do I Remove or Reinstall Google Chat on a Mac?
Uninstalling the Google Chat Mac app removes the PWA but does not delete the Google account or Chat conversations.
- Open the installed Chat window.
- Open its app menu and choose the uninstall option for Google Chat.
- Confirm Remove when prompted.
- If Chat still fails in the browser, open Chrome Settings, find the privacy controls for site data, search for stored Google Chat data, and remove only the relevant site entry.
- Close and reopen Chrome, return to the official Google Chat page, sign in, and use the Install control again.
Clearing relevant site data signs the browser out of that site and may reset its permissions. Reinstall only from Google Chat in Chrome; an unofficial google chat Mac app or download package is unnecessary.
