If you forgot your iPad passcode, you may need to erase the iPad before you can use it again. If you forgot the Apple Account password used with the iPad, reset that password through a trusted Apple device or Apple’s account-recovery process.

Which iPad password did you forget?

“I can’t remember my iPad password” can refer to three different security codes. Identify which prompt appears before starting a reset:

  • iPad device passcode: The numeric or alphanumeric code entered on the Lock Screen. It protects the iPad itself and is separate from Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Apple Account password: The password for the account formerly called an Apple ID. It is used for iCloud, backups, the App Store, Find My, and Activation Lock.
  • Screen Time passcode: A separate code that controls content restrictions, app limits, and account changes. Forgetting it does not normally lock the entire iPad.

If the screen says the iPad is unavailable, disabled, or in a security lockout, the forgotten code is usually the device passcode. If Apple asks you to sign in while downloading an app, restoring a backup, or activating the device, it is asking for the Apple Account password.

For a forgotten Screen Time passcode, open Settings, select Screen Time, choose Change Screen Time Passcode, and select the option for a forgotten passcode. Enter the Apple Account information originally used to set up Screen Time. For a child’s device, the family organizer may need to make the change from the organizer’s device.

What should you do if you forgot the iPad passcode?

Apple does not provide a way to display or retrieve a forgotten iPad device passcode. If you cannot use an available passcode-reset option shown on the iPad, regaining access requires erasing the device and setting it up again.

  1. Check whether the locked screen shows a Forgot Passcode option. Follow the prompts if it appears. The iPad may require a network connection and the password for the Apple Account already associated with it.
  2. If no on-screen reset option is available, connect the iPad to a Mac or Windows computer and place the iPad in recovery mode. The button sequence depends on whether the model has a Home button.
  3. Open Finder on a Mac or the Apple device-management application available on the computer. Select the iPad and choose Restore when offered the choice between updating and restoring.
  4. Keep the iPad connected while the computer downloads the required software and erases the device. If the recovery-mode screen closes before the download finishes, place the iPad in recovery mode again.
  5. When the setup screen appears, follow the prompts to activate the iPad and restore an available backup.

Erasing removes the passcode along with the data stored only on that iPad. A reset does not preserve photos, messages, files, or settings that were never synchronized or backed up. Do not use third-party unlocking software or instructions that claim to bypass Apple’s security controls.

How do you reset a forgotten Apple Account password?

If you forgot the password for the Apple Account used on the iPad, try a trusted device first. A trusted device is an Apple device that is already signed in to the same account and can be used to confirm account changes.

  1. On a trusted iPhone or iPad, open Settings and select your name.
  2. Select Sign-In & Security, then Change Password.
  3. Enter the trusted device’s passcode when requested and create a new Apple Account password.

If you do not have your own trusted device, Apple’s support application on a borrowed Apple device may offer Reset Password followed by Help Someone Else. Information entered through that flow is not intended to sign your account into the borrowed device.

You can also open the company’s official website and look for the Apple Account password-reset or account-recovery option. Enter the requested account details and follow Apple’s verification prompts. Account recovery is intended for cases where you cannot use a trusted device or trusted phone number. Provide only information you recognize, and do not share verification codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

How do you restore an iPad after resetting it?

After an erased iPad restarts, the setup assistant offers restoration choices. The available choices depend on whether an iCloud backup, a Mac backup, or a Windows computer backup exists.

  1. Connect the iPad to a reliable Wi-Fi network and begin setup.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account previously associated with the iPad.
  3. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup to use an available iCloud copy, or connect the iPad to the computer that holds its backup.
  4. Select the relevant backup by checking the device name and backup date.
  5. Leave the iPad connected to power and the network while apps and personal data return.

Some content may appear before the restoration is fully complete. Data synchronized separately through iCloud may return after sign-in even if it was not stored inside the selected backup. If no backup or synchronized copy exists, the erased local data cannot be restored through the normal reset process.

Why does Activation Lock still ask for the owner’s Apple Account?

Activation Lock is an anti-theft feature connected to Find My. Erasing an iPad removes its device passcode, but it does not automatically remove Activation Lock.

During setup, enter the Apple Account and password previously linked to the iPad. If the iPad belonged to another person or organization, that owner may need to remove it from the owner’s account. A passcode reset cannot bypass this ownership check.

If you are the owner but cannot recover the linked account, Apple may ask for proof of ownership when reviewing an Activation Lock support request. Use an original purchase document that clearly identifies the device when available. A secondhand sale message or possession of the iPad may not establish ownership by itself.

How do you contact Apple Support when iPad recovery does not work?

Contact Apple Support if the iPad will not enter recovery mode, a computer will not recognize it, account verification repeatedly fails, or you need help with an Activation Lock request. Open the company’s official website, choose iPad support, and select the topic that matches the screen or error you see.

Before contacting support, have the iPad model, serial number if available, the exact wording on the screen, the Apple Account email address or phone number you believe is linked, and any proof of purchase. Apple Support can explain official recovery choices, but support representatives cannot reveal a device passcode, bypass Activation Lock, or restore local data that was erased without a backup.
