How to Block Caller ID Display on Your Phone
To hide your phone number on an outgoing call, use your carrier’s verified per-call caller ID code or turn off caller ID in your phone’s supported call settings. Caller ID blocking may show your call as “Private,” “Anonymous,” or “Unknown,” but it does not work for every carrier, destination, or call type.
What does blocking call display do?
Caller ID is the information sent with an outgoing call to identify the calling line. When you block caller ID display, the receiving phone normally gets the call without your visible number.
Blocking call display changes what the recipient sees; it does not prevent the carrier or certain services from receiving identifying information needed to route or handle the call. It also does not change your account number, remove your number from another person’s contacts, or hide information already saved on the recipient’s device.
The recipient may see a label such as “Private,” “Anonymous,” “Restricted,” or “Unknown.” The exact label depends on the receiving carrier and device.
How do I block call display for one call?
For AT&T and Verizon wireless lines in the United States, the carrier-verified code for blocking caller ID on one individual call is *67. Other carriers and calling services may use different controls, so confirm the procedure with your carrier before relying on it.
- Open the Phone app and select the keypad.
- Enter *67.
- Immediately enter the complete destination number, including the area code.
- Tap Call.
The block applies only to that call. After you hang up, your number should display normally on later calls unless permanent blocking is already active.
If *67 produces an error, appears as part of the destination number, or does not hide your number, stop and check your carrier’s official caller ID instructions. Do not try dialing codes found on unverified websites.
How do I block call display on every call?
Persistent caller ID blocking tells a supported phone or carrier to hide your number on ordinary outgoing calls until you change the setting. Availability depends on the carrier, line type, device, software version, and account controls.
To block call display on a supported iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Phone.
- Select Show My Caller ID.
- Turn off Show My Caller ID.
If Show My Caller ID is missing or dimmed, Apple advises contacting the carrier because the carrier controls whether the setting is available.
Android menus are not identical across manufacturers. On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, use these manufacturer-verified steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Select More options, shown as three vertical dots, then Settings.
- Select Supplementary services.
- Select Show my caller ID.
- Select Hide number.
On other supported Android phones, look in the Phone app under Settings, Calling accounts, your SIM or carrier, and Additional settings. Select Caller ID and then Hide number only if those exact controls appear. If they do not appear, consult the device maker’s instructions or ask the carrier rather than assuming another model’s steps apply.
Why does caller ID blocking not work?
Caller ID blocking can fail even when the steps are correct. Common reasons include:
- The carrier does not support caller ID blocking on that line, account type, or network.
- The destination uses a service that receives identifying information despite ordinary caller ID blocking.
- The call is going to emergency services, where caller identification is not hidden.
- The destination is toll-free; major carriers state that blocking does not apply to certain toll-free calls.
- The call is international or passes through a network that does not honor the blocking request.
- The recipient rejects anonymous calls, so the hidden call is declined or receives a recorded notice.
- A work, family, or managed account has restrictions controlled by an administrator.
Caller ID blocking also may not control the identity shown by internet calling apps. Check the privacy or outgoing caller ID setting inside the service used to place the call.
How do I turn call display back on?
If you used *67 to block call display for one call, no reset is normally needed. End the call and dial the next destination normally.
If permanent blocking is active and your carrier supports per-call unblocking, AT&T and Verizon document *82 for showing caller ID on one call:
- Open the keypad and enter *82.
- Enter the complete destination number.
- Tap Call.
Confirm this code with your own carrier before using it because codes and availability can differ.
To restore caller ID on iPhone, return to Settings, Apps, Phone, and Show My Caller ID, then turn the setting on. On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone, return to Phone, More options, Settings, Supplementary services, and Show my caller ID, then select Show number or the carrier’s network default. Other Android devices may place the equivalent control under Calling accounts or Additional settings.
How do I get help from my carrier?
Contact your carrier if caller ID controls are unavailable, dimmed, rejected, or ineffective on ordinary calls. Use the carrier’s official account app, signed-in account support area, or the contact method shown on your billing statement.
Before contacting support, prepare:
- The account holder’s name and the line you are calling from.
- Your device manufacturer, model, and software version.
- Whether the line is wireless, traditional home phone, or internet-based phone service.
- The exact menu option or error message you see.
- Whether you want to hide your number once or on every eligible call.
- Whether the problem affects all ordinary destinations or only one type of destination.
Ask the carrier whether outgoing caller ID blocking is enabled for the line and whether it must be managed through the account rather than the device. The carrier can also confirm its approved per-call codes and explain which destinations do not support blocking.
