ID.me App Download and Setup Guide
What the ID.me App Is Used For
The ID.me app gives you mobile access to your ID.me Wallet. Depending on the features available to your account, you may use it to sign in, manage identity information, store supported digital credentials, or follow identity-verification prompts.
ID.me also offers a separate ID.me Authenticator app. That app is used for certain multi-factor authentication methods, including approval notifications and temporary security codes. The Wallet app and Authenticator app have different purposes, so check the name shown in your setup instructions before downloading either one.
The app does not replace every verification method. A service may still ask for an identity document, a selfie, personal information, or another security method. Follow the instructions shown by the service you are trying to access.
Where to Download the Official App
For a safe ID.me app download free of third-party installers, use the app store already installed on your device. Do not download an APK, installation profile, or app file from a download site, email, text message, or pop-up.
- On an Apple device, open the App Store. On an Android device, open Google Play.
- Search for ID.me. Include the word Authenticator if your sign-in instructions specifically request that app.
- Open the listing and confirm that the app name matches the instructions you received.
- Check that ID.me is identified as the developer or provider.
- Review the listing’s current device and operating-system requirements before selecting Get or Install.
You can also open {site}, find the official Help Center instructions for the app, and use the store option provided there. If no official listing appears for your device or region, do not substitute an unofficial copy.
How to Install and Set Up the App
Before starting, connect to a reliable network and have access to the email address used for your ID.me Wallet. Update your device software if the official store says your current version is unsupported.
- Select Get or Install on the verified store listing and wait for installation to finish.
- Open the app from your device’s home screen or app library.
- Sign in with the email address and password for your existing ID.me Wallet. Do not create another account simply because you cannot remember your sign-in details.
- Complete the security check requested on screen.
- Review each permission request. Camera access may be needed to scan a code or capture an identity document. Notifications may be needed if you choose approval notifications for authentication.
- Follow the prompts to finish linking the app or adding an available wallet item.
If you are setting up the Authenticator app, the ID.me sign-in screen may display a QR code or offer an option to generate a code. Keep the sign-in page open while completing the matching steps in the app. Save any recovery option offered during security setup in a secure place.
Using the App to Sign In
Start at the organization or service you need to access and select its ID.me sign-in option. Enter your ID.me email address and password, then follow the security prompt.
If push notification authentication is already linked, open the notification and approve only a sign-in that you started. If you use the code generator, open ID.me Authenticator, read the current code, and enter it before it expires. Never approve an unexpected request or give a security code to another person.
Identity verification can involve additional steps outside the app. You may be asked to photograph an accepted document, take a selfie, confirm information, or consent to share verified information with the organization. The exact process depends on that organization’s requirements.
Fixing Download and Sign-In Problems
Listing unavailable: Check the spelling, device type, store region, parental controls, and operating-system compatibility shown by the official store. Use the browser-based ID.me process if the service offers it.
Installation fails: Confirm that the network is stable and the device has available storage. Restart the device, reopen the official store, and try again.
No notification arrives: Open the Authenticator app directly, confirm notifications are allowed, and check whether the sign-in page offers another authentication method already connected to your account.
A temporary code is rejected: Make sure you entered the newest code before it expired. Set the device’s date, time, and time zone to update automatically, then generate a new code.
Camera or verification prompt fails: Allow camera access, clean the lens, use even lighting, and keep the full document visible. Follow the on-screen alternative if repeated attempts fail.
Old or lost device: On the sign-in screen, choose an available backup method or the MFA recovery process. Be prepared to confirm that the Wallet belongs to you. Reinstalling the app alone may not restore a previously linked authentication method.
Getting Help with the ID.me App
Open {site} and go to the Help Center. Search for the exact app name and the wording of the error. For account-specific help, use the official support-request option there or the support option inside the app menu when available.
Before requesting help, note the email address on the account, your device model, operating-system version, app version, the service you were trying to access, and the exact error message. Include what happened immediately before the problem, but do not send your password, temporary authentication code, recovery code, or unnecessary copies of identity documents.
