How to read a credit card statement
A credit card statement is a record for one billing period. It normally lists payments, purchases, credits, interest or other account charges, along with important dates and balance information.
Check that the name and last digits identify the right account. Then compare each transaction with your receipts or purchase records. A pending transaction may not appear until a later statement. If you do not recognize a posted transaction, use the dispute instructions supplied by the card issuer.
The statement may be available electronically or on paper. Keep a copy if you need proof of a payment, purchase, or account balance.
Statement balance versus current balance
The statement balance is the amount on the account when the billing period closed. It stays tied to that statement even when later account activity changes what you currently owe.
The current balance is a more recent figure. It may include purchases, payments, refunds, and other posted activity since the statement closing date. Pending transactions may be displayed separately and may not yet be included.
A remaining statement balance is the part of the statement balance that has not yet been covered by payments or credits. For example, after making a payment, the original statement balance can remain printed on the statement while the remaining statement balance falls. Check how the issuer applied recent payments before sending another one.
What “activation” on a statement may mean
“Activation statement credit” is not a standard balance term with one meaning across all cards. It may describe a credit connected with an offer or an account action, but the exact rules depend on the issuer.
Open the transaction details and note the posting date, description, and whether the entry lowers the balance. Compare it with any offer terms you kept. If the description is still unclear, contact the card issuer using the details printed on the back of the card or on the statement. Do not provide a security code or one-time passcode in response to an unexpected message.
How to get a property tax statement
Property tax statements are issued by local government offices, not by the credit card statement service. Start with the county or city office that handles property taxes. Depending on the area, it may be called the tax collector, treasurer, assessor, or finance department.
- Have the property address ready. A parcel or assessment number can make the search easier.
- Use the local government’s property search or request the statement from that office.
- Confirm the owner name, property address, tax period, and payment status before saving or printing the document.
If a mortgage company pays the tax, you can still ask the local office for the official statement. For a certified copy or an older tax year, ask what identification or written request the office requires.
