You need the following things in order to file for a renewal request of your driver’s licence.

  • A computer, laptop or any device that has access to the internet
  • Driver’s Licence
  • UK Passport
  • National Insurance Number
  • All of your addresses for the last 3 years
  • You must be 70 years or older

In order to submit your request, you must:

  1. Click on the link that says ‘Apply Online’ on http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoringtransactions/BeforeyouapplyB/DG_066956.
  2. Carefully read the instructions on the page before clicking on ‘Start Now’.
  3. If this is your first time to use Directgov, choose the link that says ‘Register’. But if you are an existing user, choose ‘Log On’ instead.
  4. Click on the ‘Continue’ button in order to proceed.
  5. Fill in the boxes with the required information. Enter you name, gender, birthdate, place of birth, etc. on their respective fields. Proceed to the next step when you’ve finished.
  6. Read and follow through the rest of the steps to successfully file your request.

Resume or check a renewal application

If “renew app” means a renewal application, return to the official licence service through {site}. Sign in with the same details used when you started. Do not begin another application unless the service says the first one was not submitted.

Have your driving licence details, application reference, and any confirmation message ready. Look for a status, saved application, or completed applications area. If nothing appears, check that you used the same email address and sign-in method as before.

If “app” means a mobile app, make sure it is an official government app before entering personal information. A search result, advert, or third-party renewal app may not be connected to the licensing authority.

Reset a renewal password

On the sign-in screen, select the forgotten-password option. Enter the email address linked to the renewal account, then follow the instructions in the reset message.

Find or replace a renewal tracking number

A renewal may use an application, confirmation, or reference number rather than the words “tracking number.” Check the submission confirmation, email messages, saved documents, and any letter received about the renewal.

To check progress, open the official service through {site} and enter the requested reference and identity details. A postal delivery tracking code, if one was issued, is different from the application reference.

If the number is missing, use the official help form and provide your name, date of birth, postcode, and the approximate date you submitted the renewal. Send personal details only through the official service.

“New balance” and licence renewal

A driving-licence renewal does not normally have an account balance to renew. If “new balance renew” refers to a payment card, store account, or another company, do not enter those credentials on a licence-renewal page. Return to the service named on your statement or confirmation and verify which account you are trying to access.
