Why Google Asks You to Verify a Phone Number

Google phone number verification confirms that you can receive a code at the number you entered. Google may request it when you create an account, add recovery information, change security settings, or sign in under unusual circumstances.

A verified number can help Google:

• Check that an account or security change is being handled by a real person.
• Confirm your identity during certain sign-in attempts or sensitive actions.
• Send security alerts about suspicious activity.
• Offer a recovery method if you forget your password or lose access.

Verification does not guarantee that you can recover an account. Google considers the information available during each recovery attempt. A recovery phone number may also be different from a number used for two-step verification or other Google services.

How to Verify Your Phone Number

Have your phone nearby and make sure it can receive text messages or calls. Use a mobile number that belongs to you and that you expect to keep using.

1. Open Google's official Account page and sign in to the correct account.
2. Open Security & sign-in. Depending on the screen, you may instead need to open Personal info and then Phone.
3. Choose Recovery phone, Add phone number, or the similar option shown on your screen.
4. Select the correct country and enter the phone number carefully, including the area code.
5. Choose the available option to receive a code by text message or automated call.
6. Enter the code exactly as received, then select Verify, Continue, or the confirmation button displayed.

If the code is accepted, review the Phone or Recovery phone section to confirm that the number appears correctly. These are the standard steps to verify a Google Account with a phone number, although button names can vary by device.

Verify a Number Already Added to Your Google Account

To verify a phone number on a Google Account when the number is already listed, start from Google's official Account page rather than a message or unexpected pop-up.

1. Sign in and open Personal info.
2. Under Contact info, select Phone.
3. Select the number you want to review.
4. Look for Verify, Confirm, or a notice that verification is required.
5. Request a code and enter it on the Google screen that requested it.

You can also check Security & sign-in and then Recovery phone. If no verification option appears, the number may already be confirmed for that purpose. Check its listed usage instead of repeatedly deleting and adding it.

If you changed numbers, use the edit control beside the old number and follow the prompts. Google may ask you to sign in again before allowing a security-related change.

If the Verification Code Does Not Arrive

A missing code does not necessarily mean the number was rejected. Delivery can be affected by your carrier, signal, phone settings, or repeated requests.

• Check that the country, area code, and full number are correct.
• Make sure the phone has a mobile signal and is not in airplane mode.
• Confirm that your plan and device can receive standard text messages or calls.
• Check blocked-message, spam-filtering, and call-screening settings.
• Restart the phone if other texts or calls are also failing.
• Use the call option if Google offers it and text messages are not arriving.
• Request one new code, then use only the newest code. An earlier code may stop working after another is issued.

Avoid making many requests in quick succession. Google may temporarily limit additional attempts. If the screen tells you to try again later, follow that instruction without guessing at a delivery or reset time.

Never share a verification code with someone who contacts you. Enter it only on the official Google screen where you started the request.

If Google Does Not Accept the Phone Number

Google may decline a number because it is entered in the wrong format, cannot receive the required message or call, has been used too often for verification, or does not meet the requirements for that particular check. The exact reason may not always be displayed.

Re-enter the number with the correct country selected and remove typing errors. Use your own regularly used mobile number. Do not use temporary, borrowed, or publicly shared numbers.

If Google still does not accept it, follow the choices shown on the verification screen. Look for Try another way to see whether Google offers a prompt on a signed-in device, a passkey, a security key, a backup code, or another recovery method already connected to the account.

If you cannot sign in, find Account recovery through Google's official Help Center. Answer its questions as accurately as possible, preferably from a device and location you normally use. For a work or school account, contact the administrator because personal-account instructions may not apply.

Protect Your Account After Verification

After you verify a number for a Google Account, open Security & sign-in and complete the Security Checkup. Review recent security activity and signed-in devices. Sign out of devices you do not recognize and change your password if an alert was not caused by you.

Check that your recovery phone and recovery email are current and belong only to you. Remove details you no longer control. Review how the phone number is used because a number listed under contact information is not necessarily enabled for every security purpose.

Finally, review two-step verification. Keep more than one secure sign-in method when Google makes those options available, and store backup codes safely if you create them. Verification strengthens your account settings, but keeping recovery details current and responding to security alerts are also important.
