To update the credit card used for App Store purchases, open your Apple Account’s Payment & Shipping settings and edit the existing card. If Apple does not allow the card number to be edited, add the replacement card first and then remove the old card.
What do you need before updating an App Store credit card?
Before you update a credit card for the App Store, have the replacement card and its billing details ready. The billing name, street address, ZIP code, card number, expiration date, and security code should match the information held by the card issuer.
You also need access to the Apple Account used for App Store purchases. An Apple Account is the account you use to sign in to Apple services and manage payment information. Apple may ask for the account password or device authentication before showing Payment & Shipping settings.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the correct Apple Account.
- Have the replacement card’s current billing details available.
- Keep access to a trusted device or trusted phone number in case Apple requests verification.
- Check that the card type is accepted for the country or region assigned to the Apple Account.
How do you update a credit card in the App Store on iPhone or iPad?
On an iPhone or iPad, Apple places App Store payment information in Settings rather than inside the App Store app. Use these official steps to change credit card information in the App Store:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Payment & Shipping.
- Sign in to your Apple Account if prompted.
- Tap the existing credit card.
- Tap Edit.
- Enter the updated billing information.
- Tap Done.
Review every field before saving. A correct card number can still be rejected if the billing address or ZIP code does not match the card issuer’s records.
How do you update a credit card for the App Store on a Mac?
To update a credit card on the App Store from a Mac, open the account settings inside the App Store:
- Open the App Store.
- Click your name. If your name is not shown, click Sign In, enter your Apple Account details, and then click your name.
- Click Account Settings.
- Sign in again if Apple asks you to verify the account.
- Find Payment Information and click Manage Payments.
- Click Edit beside the existing credit card.
- Enter the updated billing information.
- Click Done.
If Edit does not provide a field for the information you need to change, add the replacement card as a new payment method instead.
How do you add a new card and remove the old App Store card?
Some card details cannot be changed on an existing payment method. A replacement card with a different number may need to be added as a new method before the old card can be removed.
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, and select Payment & Shipping. Then follow these steps:
- Tap Add Payment Method.
- Enter the replacement card and billing details.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Edit on the payment-method list.
- Move the new card higher in the list if it should be tried before another method.
- Tap the red delete button beside the old card, tap Remove, and confirm if prompted.
On a Mac, open the App Store, select your name, choose Account Settings, and click Manage Payments beside Payment Information. Click Add Payment, enter the new card, and click Done. To delete the former card, click Edit and then Remove Payment Method.
Apple may prevent removal when the account has an unpaid balance, an active subscription requiring a payment method, or Family Sharing purchase sharing enabled. Resolve the stated condition before trying again.
What should you do if the App Store credit card cannot be updated?
If an App Store credit card cannot be updated, read the message shown on the device before repeating the steps. Common causes require different action:
- Declined card: Add another valid payment method. Ask the financial institution why the card was declined, because Apple may not receive the reason.
- Incorrect billing information: Check the name, billing address, ZIP code, expiration date, and security code against the issuer’s records.
- Unpaid balance: Follow the onscreen option to fix the payment information or settle the unpaid order with a valid method.
- Family Sharing restriction: If purchase sharing is enabled, the family organizer may need to update the shared payment method. A family member may not control the organizer’s card.
- Country or region mismatch: Use a payment method accepted for the country or region assigned to the Apple Account. Regional availability can differ.
If a valid card is still declined after its details and regional eligibility are confirmed, contact the card issuer. Do not repeatedly submit details that you have not verified.
How do you recover Apple Account access or contact Apple Support?
If you cannot sign in, use Apple’s official Apple Account password-reset or account-recovery process. Start recovery only for the Apple Account that holds the App Store payment information, and follow the identity checks shown by Apple.
If you can sign in but cannot update credit card information, open {site} and choose the Apple Account or Billing and Subscriptions support topic. Apple Support can help identify an account restriction or explain an onscreen billing message, but the card issuer must address a card decline originating with the financial institution.
