Update Apple ID Password: Sign-In Help & Reset Steps

To update an Apple password, use Sign-In & Security on a trusted Apple device or sign in through {site} and select Password. If the Apple ID password is forgotten, start a reset from a trusted device or Apple’s password-recovery option.
Apple ID is now called Apple Account, but the same email address or phone number and password still work. Before starting, have the device passcode, Mac login password, Apple Account email address or phone number, and access to a trusted device or trusted phone number if possible.
Where do I change my Apple ID password?
The safest place to change an Apple Account password is a trusted device. A trusted device is an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, or Mac already signed in to the account with two-factor authentication.
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and tap Change Password.
- On a Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click your name, select Sign-In & Security, and click Change Password.
- On the web, open {site}, sign in, choose Sign-In and Security, and select Password. Apple may direct the request to a trusted device.
If a search result mentions an “Apple ID” page, it may use Apple’s older account name. Check that the page is operated by Apple before entering a password or verification code.
How do I update my Apple password when I am signed in?
If the Apple Account is already signed in on a trusted device, the device passcode or Mac login password can confirm identity. The old Apple Account password may not be required.
- Open Settings on an iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on a Mac.
- Select your name, then choose Sign-In & Security.
- Select Change Password.
- Enter the device passcode or Mac login password when asked.
- Create the new password, enter it again for confirmation, and follow the remaining prompts.
- After the change, use the new password when another Apple device or service asks you to sign in again.
If Change Password is missing, confirm that the device is signed in to the intended Apple Account. A managed device or account may also display different options, so contact the organization that manages it when necessary.
How do I reset a forgotten Apple ID password?
A forgotten Apple Account password can usually be reset from a device already signed in to the account. Start there before trying account recovery.
- On a trusted iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and tap Change Password.
- Enter the device passcode and follow the prompts to set a new password.
- On a trusted Mac, open System Settings, select your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and click Change Password. Enter the Mac login password when prompted.
- On a new Apple device, select Forgot Password or the similarly worded option on the Apple Account sign-in screen.
- If no trusted device is available, use the Apple Support app on a borrowed Apple device. Under Support Tools, choose Reset Password, select Help Someone Else, and enter the account email address or phone number.
- If those methods fail, use Apple’s online password-recovery option and follow the identity checks shown on screen.
A reset may use a trusted phone number, a trusted device, or a previously configured recovery contact. An email alone may not be enough when two-factor authentication protects the account.
What do I do if two-factor authentication blocks me?
Two-factor authentication requires the password plus a verification code or approval from a trusted device or trusted phone number. Never give a verification code, recovery key, or password to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Check every trusted Apple device for an approval prompt or verification code.
- On the code screen, select Didn’t Get a Code? to request another available verification method.
- If the trusted number is still yours, choose the option to receive a code by text message or automated call when offered.
- If the usual device is unavailable but another trusted device is signed in, use that device to change the password.
- If a recovery contact was set up earlier, ask that person to generate a recovery code. A recovery contact cannot view the account or its data.
- If no trusted device or trusted number is accessible, choose the option indicating that the number cannot be used and begin account recovery.
Account recovery includes a security waiting period determined by Apple. Apple Support cannot shorten it. Follow Apple’s instructions carefully and avoid repeated sign-in attempts that could complicate recovery.
Why will Apple not accept my new password?
An Apple Account password must have at least eight characters and contain both letters and numbers. It cannot contain three or more identical characters in a row or be a commonly used password.
- Use a password created for the Apple Account, not the device’s numeric passcode.
- Check capitalization because passwords are case-sensitive.
- Remove accidental spaces added by copying and pasting.
- Make sure both new-password fields match exactly.
- Choose a less predictable password if Apple identifies the first choice as too common.
- If the password changed successfully but an app rejects it, confirm that the app is asking for the Apple Account password. Some third-party apps that access iCloud data require an app-specific password instead.
- If the account is locked or disabled after repeated attempts, use Apple’s displayed recovery instructions instead of continuing to guess.
How do I contact Apple Support for Apple Account help?
Use Apple’s official Support site or the Apple Support app and choose Apple Account Support. Select the issue that best matches Forgotten Password, Sign-In, Locked Account, or Two-Factor Authentication, then use the contact choices Apple displays for the United States.
Have the Apple Account email address or phone number, trusted-device details, and the exact error message ready. Apple Support can explain reset options and account-recovery status, but representatives cannot reveal a password, accept a verification code from you, bypass identity checks, or shorten an account-recovery waiting period.
