How to Update Your App Store Payment Method

Updated 2026-08-20 · 1060 words

To update an App Store payment method on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, choose Payment & Shipping, and select the method you want to edit. On a Mac, open the App Store, select your name, open Account Settings, and choose Manage Payments next to Payment Information.

What do you need before you update your App Store payment method?

Before changing the payment method for your Apple Account, make sure you can sign in and complete any identity check Apple requests. Apple Account is the current name for the account previously called an Apple ID.

  • Have the email address or phone number associated with your Apple Account.
  • Know your Apple Account password, or use a device where the account is already signed in.
  • Keep a trusted device or trusted phone number available for a verification code.
  • Have the payment method number, expiration information, security details, and billing name and address ready.
  • Confirm that the billing address matches the information held by the payment provider.
  • Check that the Apple Account country or region matches the country or region supported by the payment method.

Use the Apple Account that handles App Store activity on the device. If Media & Purchases shows a different account, changing another account’s details will not fix the App Store payment issue.

How do you update a payment method on an iPhone or iPad?

Use the Settings app, not the App Store app, to update the payment details associated with an Apple Account on an iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Payment & Shipping.
  4. Sign in or complete Face ID, Touch ID, or another requested verification step.
  5. Tap the existing payment method.
  6. Tap Edit if that option appears.
  7. Enter the corrected billing information.
  8. Tap Done.

If the existing method still fails, return to Payment & Shipping and add a different valid method. After the new method is accepted, remove the old one if Apple allows it.

How do you update a payment method on a Mac?

The App Store provides the standard path for an App Store payment method update on a Mac.

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Click your name near the bottom of the sidebar. If your name is not shown, click Sign In first.
  3. Click Account Settings.
  4. Sign in again if Apple requests verification.
  5. Find Payment Information and click Manage Payments.
  6. Click Edit beside the payment method you want to change.
  7. Enter the updated billing information and click Done.

On supported macOS versions, System Settings may also show Payment & Shipping under your name. If the available controls do not let you edit the method there, use the App Store sequence.

How do you add, remove, or reorder App Store payment methods?

Payment priority is the order in which Apple attempts to use the methods listed for the Apple Account. Account balance may be handled separately from the methods you can reorder.

  • Add: On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Payment & Shipping, and choose Add Payment Method. On Mac, open Manage Payments through the App Store and select Add Payment.
  • Remove: Open Payment & Shipping or Manage Payments, choose Edit, select the delete or removal control beside the method, and confirm.
  • Reorder: Choose Edit, then drag the listed payment methods into the preferred order when the reorder controls are available.

Apple may require at least one method to remain on file when the account has an unpaid balance, an active subscription, or responsibility for Family Sharing purchase sharing. Adding a replacement before removing the old method often resolves this restriction.

Why can’t you update an App Store payment method?

If an App Store payment method update is rejected, read the exact message before trying again. Repeatedly entering the same details will not correct an account or provider restriction.

  • Declined or invalid details: Recheck the number, expiration information, security details, billing name, and billing address. Ask the payment provider about a decline that continues after the details are corrected.
  • Unpaid balance: A message such as “billing problem with a previous purchase” or “verification required” can indicate an outstanding balance. Add a valid method or use the Fix Payment Information option if it appears.
  • Country or region mismatch: The payment method and billing address generally need to be valid for the country or region assigned to the Apple Account.
  • Family Sharing: When purchase sharing is active, the family organizer’s payment settings can affect other members. A member may need the organizer to update the shared method.
  • Unavailable payment type: Accepted methods vary by country or region and can change. Check Apple’s current payment-method information through {site}.
  • Removal restriction: An active subscription, unpaid balance, or Family Sharing responsibility may prevent removal of the only method on file.

This process changes billing for Apple Account media services. It does not edit cards stored separately for Apple Pay or change billing handled directly by another company.

How do you recover access to your Apple Account?

If you cannot sign in, first try resetting the Apple Account password from a trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is already signed in. A trusted device is a device Apple recognizes as associated with the account and can use for identity verification.

  1. Open the password or Sign-In & Security settings on a trusted device.
  2. Choose the password-change option and follow the device prompts.
  3. If no trusted device is available, use Apple’s official password-reset or account-recovery process.
  4. If you previously created an account recovery contact, ask that person to generate the recovery code through Apple’s official controls.
  5. Follow every verification instruction and wait for Apple to complete the security process.

Apple Support cannot bypass account security or guarantee when account recovery will finish. Never share your password, device passcode, or verification code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

How do you contact Apple Support about a payment method?

Open {site} and choose the support topic for Apple Account billing, payment methods, or account access. Use only the contact choices Apple displays for your location and issue.

Before contacting Apple Support, prepare the Apple Account email address or phone number, the device model, the operating-system version, and the exact error message. Note which steps you completed and whether the problem occurs on more than one device. Do not send full payment details, your password, or verification codes in an ordinary message.
