SSA Login.gov: How to Access Your Social Security Account
What Is SSA Login.gov?
Your personal my Social Security account belongs to the Social Security Administration, or SSA. Login.gov is the government sign-in service that checks your credentials and helps verify your identity before SSA gives you access.
This means your Login.gov email, password, and two-factor authentication method are managed by Login.gov. Your Social Security records and account services remain with SSA. The SSA login.gov process adds identity checks so another person cannot enter your account with only a password.
Login.gov can also provide access to other participating government services. You do not need a separate Login.gov account for each agency. Each person must use an individual account and an email address that is not shared with a spouse or family member.
Where to Sign In
Open {site}, find the personal my Social Security section, and select Sign In. Choose the button labeled “Sign in with Login.gov.” This is the safest entry point because you begin on the official SSA site and are then transferred to Login.gov.
Enter the email address and password connected to your Login.gov account. Complete the second authentication step, then approve sharing the requested verified information if prompted. Login.gov should return you to your personal SSA account.
Do not use an old Social Security username and password. SSA now accepts Login.gov or ID.me credentials for its online services. If a search result or saved bookmark shows an unfamiliar sign-in page, leave it and start again through {site}. The phrase my SSA login.gov is commonly used in searches, but the official account is called my Social Security.
Setting Up Your Login.gov Account
Before starting, have access to your email and an authentication method. Identity verification may also require your Social Security number, an accepted government-issued photo ID, and a United States phone number or mailing address.
- Start from the personal my Social Security page and select Create an Account.
- Choose Login.gov as the sign-in provider. If you already use Login.gov with another agency, sign in with that account instead of creating another one.
- For a new account, enter your email and confirm it using the message Login.gov sends.
- Create a unique password and set up at least one two-factor authentication method.
- Follow the identity-verification prompts. Enter your information exactly as it appears on your identification and records.
- Review the consent screen that allows Login.gov to share verified information with SSA.
- Return to SSA and complete any remaining account prompts.
Simply creating Login.gov credentials may not finish the SSA connection. Always begin or resume the process from the SSA account page so Login.gov knows which government service you are trying to access.
Common Sign-In Problems
- Forgotten email: Search your email accounts for earlier Login.gov messages. Try only addresses you control. If you can still sign in, add another accessible email from your account settings.
- Wrong password: Select “Forgot your password?” on the Login.gov sign-in screen. Use the reset message promptly and create a password you do not use elsewhere.
- Expired verification code: Request a new code and enter the newest one. Older codes may stop working after a replacement is issued. Check that your device’s date and time are correct when using an authentication app.
- Code never arrives: Confirm that the displayed phone details are familiar, check blocked messages, and wait briefly before requesting another code. Choose another authentication method if one is available.
- Browser error: Update your browser, close and reopen it, or try a supported browser. Clearing cookies and cached data can resolve repeated redirects, but it may also remove a remembered-browser setting.
- Security check failure: Turn off a VPN or content blocker temporarily, then retry with the same device and browser previously used for the account.
- Repeated return to sign-in: Allow cookies, avoid private browsing, and begin again from the SSA entry point.
Recovering Access to Your Account
For a password reset, enter your Login.gov email and select the forgotten-password option. Open the reset message, choose a new password, and sign in again. If the account uses a personal key, follow the prompts to reactivate the verified profile with the most recent key.
If you lost your phone or another authentication device, select “Choose another security option.” Use a previously configured authentication app, security key, face or touch unlock, phone option, or unused backup code. After signing in, remove the lost method and add a replacement.
Login.gov cannot bypass two-factor authentication or sign in for you. If you have lost every authentication method, the recovery flow may require you to delete the Login.gov account, complete the stated waiting process, and create it again. Deleting Login.gov credentials does not erase records held by SSA, but you may need to verify your identity and reconnect the new credentials before regaining access.
If you no longer control the original email and cannot reset the password, use an accessible email for a new account and complete identity verification again. Do not repeatedly create accounts unless the Login.gov instructions tell you that replacement is necessary.
Contacting Support
Contact Login.gov support for problems with its email, password, verification codes, phone details, authentication methods, or identity-proofing screens. Use the Help or Contact option shown on the official Login.gov page reached during the SSA sign-in process.
Contact SSA when Login.gov accepts your credentials but your personal Social Security account is blocked, missing, deactivated, or not connecting correctly. SSA can also help with electronic-access restrictions and direct you to a local office when identity verification cannot be completed online.
Explain where the failure occurs and copy the exact error message without sending your password, authentication code, backup codes, or full Social Security number. A screenshot can help, but cover sensitive personal information first.
Keeping Your Account Secure
- Use a long, unique Login.gov password and store it in a trusted password manager.
- Set up two authentication methods so losing one device does not lock you out.
- Keep backup codes offline in a secure place. Each code can be used only once.
- Never share a password or one-time code with someone claiming to provide support.
- Start at the official SSA account page instead of following unexpected messages or advertisements.
- Check the page carefully before entering personal information. Login.gov may appear as a service name, but misspellings and unusual prompts can signal phishing.
- Sign out after using a shared device, and do not save your password or mark the browser as trusted on a public computer.
