How to Set Up a Google Phone Number

Updated 2026-08-15 · 1034 words

What You Need Before You Start

A Google phone number is set up through Google Voice. For a personal number, sign in with the Google Account you want connected to Voice. If the account belongs to a workplace or school, your administrator may need to enable or configure the service.

You also need:

  • A current Android or iOS device with the official Google Voice app, or a computer with a supported browser.
  • A reliable internet connection during setup.
  • Access to a phone number that Google accepts for verification.
  • A phone that is turned on and able to receive the verification text or call.
  • Permission to use the Google Account and verification number.

Personal Google Voice number selection is intended for users in the United States. Google may check account, device, location, or verification details. Complete every check shown on the screen. Do not use someone else’s number or attempt to work around a rejected verification.

How to Set Up a Google Phone Number

If you are searching for how to setup a Google phone number, the official process begins in Google Voice. Use the official app or open Google Voice from Google’s website.

  1. Sign in to your Google Account.
  2. Read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then select Continue if you agree.
  3. Select Search to look for available Google Voice numbers.
  4. Enter a city or area code. If no numbers appear, search a nearby city or another area code.
  5. Choose an available number and select it.
  6. Follow the verification prompts. Enter a phone number you control when requested.
  7. Ask Google to send the verification code by an available method.
  8. Enter the code exactly as received, then select Verify or Finish.

When setup succeeds, the selected Voice number appears in your account. Keep the verification code private. Google representatives and legitimate help pages will not require you to post it publicly.

How to Set Up the Number on a Mobile Device

To set up Google phone number access on a mobile device, install the official Google Voice app from the device’s normal app store. Check that the publisher is Google before opening it.

  1. Open the Voice app and sign in.
  2. If several Google Accounts are on the device, select the account that should own the number.
  3. Review the terms and tap Continue.
  4. Tap Search, then search by city or area code.
  5. Tap Select beside the number you want.
  6. Complete the on-screen verification steps and enter the code you receive.
  7. Allow only the device permissions you want to use, such as microphone access for calls or notifications for incoming activity.

Afterward, open the app’s account or settings area. Confirm that your selected Google Voice number is displayed under the correct Google Account. You can also return to the main Voice screen and check that the calling, messages, and voicemail sections load without another setup prompt.

If the app opens under the wrong account, tap the profile image and switch accounts. A device’s phone number can be linked to only one Voice account at a time, even though the app can contain more than one Google Account.

How to Set Up the Number on a Computer

To learn how to set up a Google phone number on a computer, begin at Google’s official Google Voice page. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.

  1. Open Google’s main website and use its apps menu or Help search to locate Google Voice.
  2. Sign in to the intended Google Account.
  3. Review the terms and select Continue.
  4. Search for numbers using a city or area code.
  5. Click Select beside an available number.
  6. Enter the requested verification number and choose the offered text or call method.
  7. Enter the code and finish the on-screen steps.

Your Voice number should then appear in the account area. To receive browser call notifications, remain signed in with the Google Voice page open and allow browser notifications if you want them. If setup repeatedly reloads or buttons do not respond, update the browser, allow required cookies, disable interfering extensions temporarily, or try another supported browser.

If Phone Number Verification Fails

A failed code does not always mean there is an account problem. First check that the verification number was entered correctly and can currently receive texts or calls.

  • If no code arrives, confirm cellular service, check blocked or filtered messages, and request a new code only after reviewing the number.
  • If a code is rejected, use the newest code and enter it without extra spaces. Earlier codes may no longer work after another request.
  • If Google rejects the forwarding number, it may already be linked to another Google Voice account or may not meet Google’s verification requirements.
  • If a mobile number cannot receive a text, use another method only when Google offers it. A landline may be verified by an automated call when that option appears.
  • If you made several attempts, stop and follow any message Google displays before trying again.

Do not share a code, use a public code-receiving service, or ask an unofficial setup provider to verify the account. If the number belongs to another person, have that person manage their own account instead.

If a previously linked number needs attention, open Voice Settings, find Linked numbers, and look for Reverify. Google will provide the approved verification choices there.

How to Get Official Support

For official instructions on how to set up Google phone number service, open Google’s Help Center and select Google Voice. Search for “Set up Google Voice,” “verify a phone number,” or the exact error shown on your screen.

If you cannot sign in, use the Google Account Help section and choose the account recovery option. Answer the questions as accurately as possible, preferably from a familiar device and location. Never use the new Google Voice number itself as the only recovery number for the Google Account that owns it.

The Google Voice Help Center may offer the Help Community as a next step. Post only the minimum information needed and never include passwords, verification codes, or a complete phone number. For a work or school account, contact the organization’s Google Workspace administrator. Any additional support channel available to your account will be shown inside the official Help interface.
