How to Reset a Forgotten Samsung Galaxy Tab Password

If you forgot your Samsung Galaxy Tab password, first identify whether you forgot the tablet’s screen lock or your Samsung account password. A forgotten screen PIN, password, or pattern usually cannot be removed without erasing the tablet unless it runs Android 4.4 or earlier and offers Google’s old recovery option.
Did you forget the Galaxy Tab screen lock or Samsung account password?
A screen lock is the PIN, pattern, password, fingerprint, or face check that protects the Galaxy Tab itself. Your Samsung account password signs you in to Samsung services and does not normally replace or reset the tablet’s screen lock.
- If the tablet rejects a PIN, pattern, or password before showing the Home screen, you forgot the screen lock.
- If you can open the tablet but cannot sign in to Samsung services, you forgot the Samsung account password.
- If a fingerprint or face check stops working after a restart, Android requires the backup PIN, pattern, or password before biometrics work again.
A factory reset may also trigger Factory Reset Protection. This security feature can require the Google account previously used on the tablet, so recover that account before erasing the device.
Can Find My Mobile remotely unlock a Samsung Galaxy Tab?
No. Samsung ended the Remote Unlock feature in SmartThings Find, formerly called Find My Mobile, in December 2023. Instructions that tell you to sign in, select the tablet, and choose Unlock are outdated, even if the Galaxy Tab is online and connected to a Samsung account.
SmartThings Find may still help locate or remotely erase an eligible tablet. Remote erasure is not an unlock: it deletes local data and returns the device to its factory settings. It generally requires the tablet to be powered on, online, visible to the service, and already connected to the relevant account.
- From another device, open {site} and find Samsung’s SmartThings Find service.
- Sign in with the Samsung account associated with the locked tablet.
- Select the Galaxy Tab and review the available actions.
- If Factory reset or Erase is offered, use it only after accepting that local data will be deleted.
Can a linked Google account unlock a forgotten pattern or PIN?
Google’s “Forgot pattern” recovery works only on devices running Android 4.4 or earlier, and it applies to a pattern lock rather than modern Android screen locks. Most Galaxy Tabs still in regular use do not support this option.
- Enter an incorrect pattern several times until “Forgot pattern” appears.
- Select “Forgot pattern.”
- Enter the Google account username and password previously added to the tablet.
- Follow the prompts to create a new screen lock.
If the option never appears, repeated guesses will not make it available. A linked Google account on a newer tablet may help restore backed-up information after a reset, but it cannot directly remove the forgotten PIN, pattern, or password.
How do you factory-reset a locked Samsung Galaxy Tab?
A recovery-mode factory reset erases apps, settings, accounts, photos, downloads, and other data stored locally on the Galaxy Tab. Information already synchronized with a cloud account may be restored after setup, but unsynchronized data is normally lost.
Button combinations vary by tablet design and software version. Confirm the instructions for the exact model with Samsung before proceeding; do not repeatedly try combinations intended for a different Galaxy device.
- Charge the tablet and power it off. Some models may need to be connected by USB before recovery mode will open.
- Use Samsung’s documented hardware-button combination for the exact model to start Recovery mode.
- When the recovery menu appears, use the Volume buttons to highlight “Wipe data/factory reset.”
- Use the Power or Side button to select it, then confirm “Factory data reset.”
- Select “Reboot system now” when the reset finishes.
- During setup, sign in with the Google account previously used on the tablet if Factory Reset Protection asks for it.
If you searched for “how to reset Samsung Galaxy Tab A,” check the full model number on the tablet or its original records before choosing a button sequence. Galaxy Tab A versions do not all enter recovery mode in the same way.
What if you also forgot your Samsung account password?
Reset the Samsung account password separately on another phone, tablet, or computer. Changing this password does not remove the Galaxy Tab screen lock, but it may be needed to use Samsung services or complete account verification.
- Go to Samsung’s account sign-in area and select “Reset password” or “Forgot password.”
- Enter the email address associated with the Samsung account.
- Choose an offered verification method, such as email or text, and complete the identity check.
- Create a new password, then use it when Samsung asks you to sign in again.
If you no longer have access to the recovery email address or phone, contact Samsung account support. Support may verify account ownership, but it cannot reveal an existing password or preserve local tablet data while bypassing a screen lock.
What should you change after regaining access?
After you reset the Samsung Galaxy Tab and finish setup, create a screen lock you can remember without making it easy for someone else to guess.
- Store the new PIN or password in a trusted password manager or another secure place.
- Add fingerprint or face recognition if the tablet supports it, while remembering that the main screen credential is still required after some restarts.
- Turn on Google and Samsung backup options that you understand and want to use.
- Confirm that important photos, files, contacts, and app data are actually syncing.
- Keep account recovery email addresses and phone information current.
When should you contact Samsung support?
Contact Samsung when Recovery mode will not open, the tablet freezes during a reset, its buttons are damaged, or you are concerned that self-service could affect a repair or warranty claim. You should also seek help if the tablet requests an account you do not recognize after a legitimate ownership transfer.
Open {site} and use the verified support options shown there. Have the exact model number, serial number, proof of ownership, and a description of the screen in front of you. Samsung support or an authorized service center may help perform a factory reset after verifying ownership, but should not be expected to bypass the lock while keeping unbacked-up data.
