How to Retrieve an Apple Password on iPhone

An Apple Account password cannot be displayed on an iPhone; if you forgot it, Apple requires you to verify your identity and create a new password.
Can You Retrieve an Apple Password on an iPhone?
You cannot find or view the existing password for your Apple Account, formerly called an Apple ID. You can reset the password on an iPhone after Apple verifies that the account belongs to you.
Before choosing a recovery method, identify which credential you need:
- Your Apple Account password signs you in to iCloud, the App Store, and other Apple services.
- Your iPhone passcode unlocks the device. It is separate from your Apple Account password.
- A Screen Time passcode controls content and privacy restrictions. It has its own reset process.
- Saved website and app passwords are credentials stored in the Passwords app or in Settings on older iPhones. These may be viewable after you unlock the password list.
If you searched for how to retrieve an Apple password on iPhone but meant the account used for Apple services, follow the reset steps below. If you meant a saved login for another website or app, use the Passwords instructions later on this page.
How Do You Reset Your Apple Account Password in Settings?
The simplest way to reset an Apple password on iPhone is through Settings on a trusted iPhone that is already signed in to the account. A trusted device is an Apple device previously signed in with two-factor authentication.
- Unlock the iPhone and open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Enter the iPhone passcode if requested. This confirms access to the trusted device; it is not the Apple Account password.
- Enter and confirm a new Apple Account password, then follow the onscreen prompts.
Menu wording can vary slightly with the iOS version. If your name is not shown at the top of Settings, the iPhone may not be signed in to your Apple Account, so use an account-recovery option instead.
After changing the password, Apple services may ask you to sign in again. Enter the new password only in Settings, an Apple app, or an official Apple sign-in screen you opened yourself.
How Do You Recover the Password When You Cannot Sign In?
If you forgot your Apple password on iPhone and cannot use the usual trusted device, start an official password reset. Apple may offer different verification choices based on the trusted devices, trusted phone numbers, and recovery options already connected to the account.
- At an Apple Account sign-in screen, choose the option indicating that you forgot the password or cannot sign in.
- Enter the email address or phone number associated with the Apple Account.
- Use a trusted device or trusted phone number if Apple offers one.
- If a verification code cannot be received, select the option saying that you did not receive a code or cannot access your devices.
- Follow the onscreen identity checks. If Apple offers account recovery, provide only information you can confirm accurately.
You can also open the Apple Support app on a borrowed iPhone or iPad, select the password-reset tool, and choose the option to help someone else. Your information should not remain stored on the borrowed device when you use that official flow.
If you previously appointed an account recovery contact, that person may be able to generate a recovery code from their Apple device. Give or receive that code only through the official recovery process. A recovery contact cannot see your password or access your account.
How Do You View Saved Apple Passwords on an iPhone?
Saved passwords are logins for websites and apps, not the password for your Apple Account. On current iPhone software, these credentials appear in the Passwords app.
- Open the Passwords app.
- Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode.
- Select All or search for the website or app name.
- Open the matching entry to view its saved username, password, or passkey details.
On an iPhone with iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings, tap Passwords, authenticate, and select the website or app. If an entry is missing, check the complete list and the Deleted or Recently Deleted area. Also confirm that you are looking under the correct website or app name.
The Passwords app may contain a saved credential for an Apple-related website, but that does not mean it can reveal the current Apple Account password. If the saved entry is old or does not work, reset the Apple Account password through Apple’s official process.
What Should You Do if Apple Password Recovery Does Not Work?
If you cannot recover an Apple Account password on iPhone, repeated guesses may not help. Check the details and the device before starting over.
- Confirm that you entered the email address or phone number belonging to the correct Apple Account.
- Check that the iPhone has a working internet connection and current system software.
- If a code does not arrive, check trusted devices for an approval notice and confirm that the displayed trusted phone number is familiar.
- Look for the option to request another code or state that you cannot access the trusted number.
- If recovery is already underway, follow Apple’s onscreen instructions and wait for Apple’s update. Support representatives cannot shorten the identity-verification process.
- If the account is locked, inactive, or disabled, use the corresponding access-recovery option offered by Apple rather than repeatedly attempting a normal sign-in.
Open the company’s official website when you need Apple’s official account-recovery or support choices. Do not use password-recovery software, social-media contacts, or anyone claiming that they can bypass Apple’s security checks.
How Do You Protect Your Apple Account After Recovery?
After you retrieve access by resetting the Apple Account password on your iPhone, review the account before returning to normal use.
- Open Settings, tap your name, and review Sign-In & Security.
- Confirm that the trusted phone numbers and email addresses belong to you and are current.
- Review the devices associated with the Apple Account. Remove any device you do not recognize or no longer control.
- Consider adding another trusted phone number and an account recovery contact so one missing device does not leave you without a verification method.
- Use a unique password that is not reused for email, banking, or other accounts.
Never disclose your Apple Account password, device passcode, verification code, or recovery key to someone who contacts you. Apple Support does not need those secrets to help you. If an unexpected sign-in notification appears, deny the request, change the password from Settings, and review the account’s trusted information and devices.
