How to Reset iPhone Password Using Buttons

You cannot reset a forgotten iPhone passcode using only the physical buttons. The buttons can restart an iPhone or help place it in recovery mode, but recovery mode requires a Mac or Windows PC to erase and restore the device.
If no computer is available, use the Forgot Passcode? or Erase iPhone option on the lock screen when it appears. That on-device method requires an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection, Find My to have been enabled, and the password for the Apple Account signed in on the iPhone.
When can you reset an iPhone without a computer?
A no-computer reset may work when the passcode is forgotten, Face ID or Touch ID cannot unlock the phone, and the lock screen displays Forgot Passcode? or Erase iPhone. Security Lockout is the protected state that appears after repeated incorrect passcode attempts.
Choose the recovery path that matches what appears on the iPhone:
- If you recently changed the passcode and the screen offers a previous-passcode option, use the old passcode and follow the prompts to create another one.
- If Forgot Passcode? or Erase iPhone appears, the iPhone may be erased directly without a computer.
- If neither option appears, recovery mode and a Mac or Windows PC are required.
- If Face ID or Touch ID still works, back up important information before restarting the phone, because a restart requires the passcode.
What should you know before resetting a locked iPhone?
Resetting a locked iPhone erases its apps, photos, messages, settings, and passcode. Information that was already synchronized with iCloud or saved in an iCloud or computer backup can be restored during setup. Data that exists only on the iPhone cannot normally be recovered after the erase.
For an on-device reset, keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service. Have the password for the Apple Account currently signed in on the device. Find My must already be enabled; turning it on after becoming locked out is not possible.
Charge the iPhone before starting. If the device uses an eSIM and presents a choice about retaining or deleting it, read that prompt carefully so cellular service is handled as intended.
What is the button sequence for an iPhone reset?
The familiar volume-up, volume-down, and side-button sequence performs a force restart on compatible iPhones. It does not erase a forgotten passcode and does not, by itself, complete recovery mode.
- Quickly press and release the volume-up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume-down button.
- Press and hold the side button.
- Release the side button when the Apple logo appears if the goal is only to force-restart the iPhone.
Do not repeatedly test passcodes after the restart. More incorrect attempts can extend the lockout period.
To enter recovery mode for passcode removal, follow the onscreen or computer instructions for the exact iPhone model. Current iPhones with Face ID use the side button while the powered-off phone is connected by cable to a computer, and the button remains held until the computer-and-cable recovery image appears. Older models use a Home or volume button instead, so the volume-up, volume-down, and side-button order should not be assumed to apply to every iPhone.
Should you choose Update or Restore in recovery mode?
Recovery mode presents its choices on the connected Mac or Windows PC, not as a complete buttons-only reset on the iPhone.
- Update attempts to reinstall iOS while preserving personal data. It can help with some software problems, but it does not remove a forgotten passcode.
- Restore erases the iPhone, installs iOS again, and removes the forgotten passcode. Restore is the required choice when the passcode itself is the problem.
If a download takes long enough for the iPhone to leave the recovery screen, allow the download to finish and then repeat the official recovery-mode steps for that model.
How do you erase an iPhone without a computer?
If the lock screen offers the on-device reset, use these steps instead of trying to reset iPhone with buttons:
- On the iPhone Unavailable or Security Lockout screen, tap Forgot Passcode? On some earlier software, the option is labeled Erase iPhone.
- Select the option to begin the device reset.
- Enter the password for the Apple Account signed in on the iPhone.
- Confirm that the iPhone should be erased.
- Keep the device connected while it erases and restarts.
If the option never appears, confirm that the phone has a network connection. A computer-based restore or a remote Find My erase is the alternative.
How do you set up the iPhone after the reset?
After the erase, follow the setup prompts, connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service, and sign in with the Apple Account previously used on the iPhone. Activation Lock remains in place after an erase and requires the associated account credentials or Apple-supported proof of ownership.
Choose an iCloud backup or a computer backup when the setup process offers a restore option. Select a backup made before the lockout and keep the phone connected while content returns. If no backup exists, set up the iPhone as new and create a new passcode; erased local data will not return.
What if the buttons do not trigger recovery mode?
First charge the iPhone, remove any case that may obstruct a button, and check whether each button moves and responds. Confirm that the cable and computer connection work. Then repeat the model-specific recovery instructions without releasing the required button when the Apple logo appears.
If the buttons are damaged or no computer is available, use Find My from another trusted device or through iCloud to erase the iPhone remotely. The locked iPhone must eventually connect to a network to receive the erase command, and the Apple Account credentials are still required afterward.
When should you contact official Apple Support?
Contact official Apple Support when a button is physically damaged, the recovery screen never appears despite a working cable and computer, or the restore repeatedly fails. Support is also appropriate when the Apple Account is locked or disabled, its password cannot be recovered, or the iPhone remains unavailable after a completed restore.
Apple Support cannot provide instructions to bypass Activation Lock. Be ready to verify ownership if account recovery or hardware service is needed.
