You can reset a locked iPhone to factory settings without the passcode by erasing it through Find My or restoring it with a computer. There is no legitimate way to bypass the passcode, and the iPhone may still require the linked Apple ID and password after the reset.

When can you reset an iPhone without the passcode?

If you are trying to learn how to reset an iPhone to factory settings without passcode access, Apple provides two main paths:

  • Use Find My to erase the iPhone remotely. The phone must be linked to your Apple Account, formerly called an Apple ID, and Find My must already be enabled.
  • Use a Mac or Windows PC to restore the iPhone in recovery mode. If recovery mode does not work, you can try Device Firmware Update mode, usually called DFU mode.

A computer does not need to be previously synced with the iPhone to perform a recovery-mode restore. However, a trusted or previously synced computer may be needed for some normal backup or management tasks while the phone is locked.

Neither method removes Activation Lock. If Find My was enabled, you will usually need the Apple Account credentials linked to the iPhone before you can activate it again.

How do you reset a locked iPhone using Find My?

Find My can send a remote erase command to a locked iPhone. The erase begins when the iPhone is online; if it is offline, the command remains pending until it connects.

  1. On another phone, tablet, or computer, open {site} and go to Find My. You can also open the Find My app on another Apple device.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account linked to the locked iPhone.
  3. Open the device list and select the locked iPhone. Check the device name carefully if several devices appear.
  4. Select the option to erase the iPhone, then review and confirm the request.
  5. Keep the iPhone connected to power and within reach of Wi-Fi or cellular service while the erase is pending.
  6. When the iPhone restarts, follow the setup prompts. Enter the linked Apple Account and password if Activation Lock appears.

If the iPhone does not appear in Find My, it may be linked to a different Apple Account or Find My may not have been enabled before the phone was locked.

How do you reset a locked iPhone using recovery mode?

Recovery mode lets Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices or iTunes on a Windows PC, reinstall iOS without entering the iPhone passcode.

  1. Open Finder on a current Mac. On a Windows PC, open Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on what is installed.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible data cable.
  3. For iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE second generation or later, press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  4. For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, hold the Side or Top button and Volume Down together until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  5. For iPhone 6s or earlier and iPhone SE first generation, hold the Home button and the Side or Top button together until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  6. When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Restore. Restore erases the iPhone and installs iOS again.
  7. Leave the iPhone connected until the process finishes. If the download takes long enough for the iPhone to leave recovery mode, let the download finish and repeat the correct button sequence.

How do you reset an iPhone using DFU mode?

DFU mode is a deeper restore state that allows a computer to reload the iPhone firmware. Try DFU mode when recovery mode repeatedly fails, the iPhone remains stuck during startup, or the computer detects a restore problem.

For an iPhone 8 or later, including newer iPhone SE models:

  1. Connect the iPhone to the computer and open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Up, then press and quickly release Volume Down.
  3. Hold the Side button until the screen turns black.
  4. While holding the Side button, hold Volume Down for about five seconds.
  5. Release the Side button but keep holding Volume Down for about ten seconds.
  6. When the computer detects an iPhone that needs restoration, release Volume Down and choose Restore.

The iPhone screen should remain completely black in DFU mode. If a cable, computer, or Apple logo appears, the timing was not correct; restart the iPhone and try again. Button timing differs on older models, so use Apple Support instructions for that exact model rather than guessing.

What happens to your data after an iPhone factory reset?

A factory reset erases the iPhone's photos, messages, apps, accounts, passcode, settings, and other locally stored data. Erasing the phone does not create a new backup.

You generally cannot make a fresh computer backup while the iPhone is locked because the phone must be unlocked to trust a new computer. After the reset, you can restore from an existing iCloud or computer backup if one is available, or set up the iPhone as new.

Data already synchronized separately with an online account may return after you sign in and enable synchronization again. A factory reset is therefore different from deleting information from every account associated with the phone.

Why does Activation Lock appear after the reset?

Activation Lock is an Apple security feature that ties an iPhone with Find My enabled to the owner's Apple Account. It is designed to prevent someone else from erasing a lost or stolen iPhone and using it as their own.

After a reset, the setup screen may request the Apple Account and password previously linked to the iPhone. Entering the device passcode is not a substitute when the setup process specifically requests those account credentials.

If the iPhone belonged to someone else, the previous owner must remove it from their account through Apple's supported process. There are no legitimate instructions for bypassing Activation Lock.

What should you do if none of the reset options work?

Contact Apple Support or take the iPhone to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider if Find My cannot locate it, the computer never recognizes it, recovery and DFU restores fail, or you cannot resolve Activation Lock.

Have the iPhone's serial number or other device details available if possible. Apple may require valid proof of ownership that identifies the device. A receipt that does not connect the purchase to the specific iPhone may not be enough.

Apple Support cannot recover data that was never backed up, disclose another person's account information, or remove Activation Lock without acceptable ownership documentation. If the buttons, connector, or screen are damaged, the device may also need inspection before a computer restore can succeed.
