How to Fix Reset Face ID Grayed Out
When Reset Face ID is grayed out, a Screen Time restriction, device-management policy, security delay, or temporary software problem may be blocking changes. Allow Face ID changes where authorized, restart and update the device, then check the Reset Face ID button again.
Why is Reset Face ID grayed out?
The Reset Face ID control normally appears in Settings under Face ID & Passcode after Face ID has been enrolled. Resetting removes the stored Face ID appearance so you can enroll your face again.
If the reset Face ID option is grayed out, check these common causes:
Screen Time is set to prevent changes to the passcode and Face ID.
A parent or guardian manages Screen Time settings through Family Sharing.
A work or school management profile controls security settings on the device.
A security feature requires an additional authentication step or delay before sensitive settings can be changed.
iOS or iPadOS has a temporary settings problem after an update, restart, or configuration change.
A disabled button does not by itself prove that the TrueDepth camera is damaged. Check restrictions and software conditions before seeking service.
How do I check Screen Time and Content & Privacy Restrictions?
Screen Time can prevent changes to the passcode, Touch ID, and Face ID. Its passcode may be different from the passcode used to unlock the device.
Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
If restrictions are enabled, scroll to Allow Changes To.
Tap Passcode & Face ID and choose Allow.
Enter the Screen Time passcode if requested.
Return to Settings, tap Face ID & Passcode, and enter the device passcode.
If you cannot change the restriction because you do not know the Screen Time passcode, use the available Screen Time passcode recovery option. On a child’s device managed through Family Sharing, the parent or guardian may need to make the change from their own device.
Do not repeatedly guess either passcode. If an authorized family organizer controls the setting, ask that person to allow Passcode & Face ID changes.
Can device management make the Reset Face ID button unavailable?
Mobile device management, or MDM, lets a business or school apply security rules to an iPhone or iPad. An MDM policy can control passcode requirements and other device settings, which may leave the Face ID reset button disabled.
Open Settings.
Tap General.
Tap VPN & Device Management.
Review the listed management profiles and their details without changing them.
If no profiles appear, the device does not have a visible device-management profile installed. If a work or school profile is present, contact that organization’s administrator and explain that you cannot reset Face ID.
Do not remove an organization’s profile to work around its controls. Removing a profile can also remove managed settings, apps, accounts, network access, or related data. Some enrollment profiles cannot be removed by the user at all. Let the administrator confirm whether the restriction is intentional and make any permitted change.
How do I restart and update the iPhone or iPad?
A normal restart can clear a temporary settings condition without deleting personal data. After the restart, the device will require its passcode before Face ID can be used.
Use the device’s physical buttons to display the power-off slider. Button combinations differ by model, so follow the labels shown on the screen.
Drag the slider and wait for the device to shut down.
Turn the device on again and enter its passcode.
Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update.
If an update is offered, connect to power when needed, use a reliable internet connection, and follow the onscreen instructions.
Back up important information before installing a system update. If the device is managed, its organization may control when updates can be installed.
How do I try resetting Face ID again?
After checking restrictions, management, and updates, return to the Face ID controls and see whether Reset Face ID is active.
Open Settings and tap Face ID & Passcode.
Enter the device passcode.
Tap Reset Face ID if the control is available.
Tap Set Up Face ID.
Hold the device in the position shown and follow both onscreen scans.
After enrollment finishes, review which features are allowed to use Face ID.
Keep the TrueDepth camera area clear of a case edge, screen protector, dirt, or your hand during enrollment. If you only want Face ID to recognize a substantially different look and the option is available, you may be able to choose Set Up an Alternate Appearance instead of deleting the current enrollment.
What should I do if Reset Face ID remains unavailable?
If you still cannot reset Face ID, note the exact message on the screen and whether the button is gray, missing, or selectable but unresponsive. Also record the device model and installed iOS or iPadOS version.
Open the Apple Support app, if it is already installed, or use Apple’s official support options from another device.
Select the iPhone or iPad and describe the issue as “Reset Face ID is grayed out.”
Complete only the diagnostics or troubleshooting steps supplied by Apple.
If the device belongs to a business or school, contact its administrator before arranging service or changing profiles.
If Apple recommends inspection, use an Apple-authorized service option and back up the device first when possible.
Support can help distinguish a settings restriction from a camera or hardware issue. A Face ID reset is not a guaranteed hardware repair, and only a trained technician should service the TrueDepth camera system.
