How to Report a DTE Energy Outage

Ways to Report a DTE Outage

Report every loss of power, even if nearby homes are also dark. DTE says customer reports help identify affected locations and determine the extent of an outage.

You can report an outage to DTE through its Outage Center, the DTE Energy Mobile App, or its automated outage-reporting phone system. Use the verified contact block above this article if you need the official calling option. DTE also provides outage updates by text and email, but its published instructions describe those messages as alerts rather than a separate way to submit the initial report.

The online tool is usually the clearest choice because it lets you identify the service address and select the type of power problem. The mobile app can also report outages and downed lines. If mobile data is unavailable, try calling from a working phone.

Report the Outage Online

To report a power outage to DTE online:

  1. Open {site} and find the Outage Center.
  2. Select Report Outage.
  3. Identify the affected location using the service address or the phone number associated with the DTE account.
  4. If you search by address, enter and select the full service address shown by the tool. Do not use a mailing address if it differs from the location without power.
  5. Choose the description that best matches the problem. The tool may allow you to report a complete outage, partial loss of power, unusually bright or dim lights, or flickering.
  6. Add relevant details if a comments box appears, then submit the report.
  7. Stay on the confirmation screen long enough to verify that the report was accepted. Save any confirmation or status information displayed.

If the address is not found, check the house number, street spelling, directional prefix, apartment or unit, and ZIP code. You can also try the account phone number or use another official reporting method. Do not assume an outage-map symbol means your specific service address has already been reported.

Report an Outage by Phone

Calling may be appropriate when the website or app will not load, mobile data is unavailable, the address tool cannot identify the property, or you need to report an electrical hazard. DTE identifies an automated phone system for outage reports and status checks.

Use only the outage-reporting number in the verified contact block above this page. Follow the prompts for a power problem, identify the affected account or service location, and listen for confirmation that the report was recorded. The automated system is intended to accept outage reports outside ordinary agent-assisted service periods, but availability can be affected by technical problems or unusually heavy call volume.

If the call disconnects before confirmation, try again or report outage DTE service through the Outage Center or mobile app. Do not repeatedly submit reports after receiving confirmation unless the situation changes or DTE says power has been restored when it has not.

Information You May Need

Have the following details ready for DTE outage reporting:

  • The full DTE service address, including an apartment or unit number.
  • The phone number associated with the account.
  • The account holder’s name and account number, if available.
  • A working phone number or email address for updates.
  • Whether all power is out or only part of the property is affected.
  • When the problem began, if known.
  • Details about flickering, unusually bright or dim lights, damaged equipment, sparks, smoke, or a downed line.
  • Whether nearby properties or streetlights also appear to be without power.

Never approach damaged electrical equipment to gather details. Report only what you can observe from a safe location.

Check Your Outage Status

After you report a DTE outage, return to the Outage Center and select Check Outage Status. Identify the same service location used in the original report. A recorded outage should appear with the information currently available for that address.

You can also view the Outage Map and search by address, ZIP code, or county. The map gives area-level information, while the status tool is more useful for confirming the report for a specific service address. Details and restoration estimates can change as crews inspect damage, so check again later rather than treating the first estimate as guaranteed.

DTE offers outage notifications by text, email, or both. Account holders can manage these choices under their profile and notification settings, and the mobile app can also manage alerts. If DTE sends a restored message but the property remains without power, use the message’s option indicating that power is still out to report the continuing problem again.

Power Line and Electrical Safety

Treat every downed power line as energized and dangerous. Keep yourself, children, pets, vehicles, tools, and other objects well away. Do not touch the line or anything it contacts, including a fence, tree, puddle, or vehicle. Use DTE’s Report Power Line Problem option from a safe place.

Do not move a fallen line, drive over it, or attempt electrical repairs. If a line falls on a vehicle, occupants should generally remain inside and request emergency help unless fire or another immediate danger makes staying inside unsafe.

Contact emergency services immediately for fire, smoke, sparking equipment, a person in contact with electrical equipment, a vehicle involving a power line, or any other immediate threat to life or property. Move to safety before reporting the hazard to DTE. This page is an independent reference and is not an official DTE Energy service.
