Remove an Account From the Gmail App

Updated 2026-08-20 · 996 words

To remove an account from the Gmail app, open the account menu, choose Manage accounts on this device, and remove only the intended address. Removing the account from the Gmail app does not delete the Google Account, mailbox, messages, or cloud data.

Before You Remove the Account

In the Gmail mobile app, signing out normally means removing the account from that phone or tablet. The account continues to exist, and you can still use it on another device or add it back later.

  • Removing an account from the app disconnects that account from the device.
  • Signing out has the same practical result in the Gmail app because the app does not provide a separate sign-out button.
  • Deleting a Google Account is a permanent account-level action that can erase email and other Google data. Do not select options labeled Delete your Google Account or Delete a Google service when you only want to remove the account from the Gmail app.

Before proceeding, confirm the complete email address. If the device contains contacts, calendar entries, or other information that has not finished syncing, allow syncing to complete first.

Remove an Account From Gmail on Android

On Android, removing a Google Account through Gmail removes that account from the device, not just from the Gmail inbox. It also signs the account out of other Google apps on that device.

  1. Open the Gmail app on the Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Manage accounts on this device.
  4. Select the exact account you want to disconnect.
  5. Tap Remove account at the bottom, then confirm if asked.
  6. If prompted, enter the device PIN, pattern, or password.

You can also use Android settings. Open Settings, select Passwords & accounts, Users & accounts, Manage accounts, or the similarly named account section shown by the device manufacturer. Select the account, tap Remove account, and confirm.

Email, contacts, calendar events, settings, and other information associated with that account stop syncing and may be removed from the device. The information stored in the online Google Account remains available elsewhere.

Remove an Account From Gmail on iPhone or iPad

To remove an email account from the Gmail app on an iPhone or iPad, use the Gmail account menu rather than deleting the app.

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Manage accounts on this device.
  4. Find the full email address you intend to remove.
  5. Tap Remove from this device beside that account.
  6. Tap Remove again to confirm.

This disconnects the account from the Gmail app without deleting the mailbox. Depending on how Google sign-in is shared on the device, the account may also be signed out of other Google apps.

Remove One Account Without Affecting Others

If several addresses are connected, removing one account does not delete the other accounts. The important step is selecting the correct full email address before confirming.

  1. Tap the profile picture in Gmail to display the connected accounts.
  2. Compare the complete address, not only the profile photo or display name.
  3. Open Manage accounts on this device.
  4. Remove only the row that shows the intended address.
  5. Return to Gmail and confirm that the other accounts still appear in the profile menu.

If you only want to read another inbox, switch accounts by tapping its address. Switching accounts is safer than removal when you expect to return to the first inbox soon.

What Happens After the Account Is Removed

After you remove an account from the Gmail app, Gmail no longer displays or syncs that account on the device. New messages remain in the online mailbox and continue to appear on other phones, tablets, or computers where the account is signed in.

On Android, removing a Google Account also stops device syncing for associated Google services, including contacts and calendar data. Items stored only as synchronized copies may disappear from the device but remain in the account online. Files or attachments that you deliberately downloaded to local storage may remain, so inspect the Downloads or Files app separately if you are preparing the device for another person.

Removing the account does not change its password, close the email address, erase messages from Google, or sign it out on every other device.

If You Cannot Remove the Account

If the expected option is missing or disabled, check these common causes:

  • Managed account: A work or school administrator may prevent removal or require removal through a work-profile or device-management screen. Contact that organization’s administrator.
  • Different menu labels: Android manufacturers may label the settings section Passwords & accounts, Users & accounts, or Manage accounts. Use the Gmail profile menu first when available.
  • Device security: Android may require the device PIN, pattern, or password, especially when removing the only Google Account.
  • App problem: Close and reopen Gmail, restart the device, and install available Gmail and operating-system updates before checking again.
  • Restrictions: A supervised device, parental controls, work profile, or configuration profile may block account changes.
  • Forgotten credentials: Removal usually relies on device verification rather than the Google password. Recover access through Google’s official account-recovery process if credentials are needed to sign in again.

Deleting and reinstalling Gmail is not a reliable substitute for removing the account because sign-in information may also be stored at the device level.

Add the Account Back Later

You can reconnect the same account whenever you still have permission to use it.

  1. Open Gmail and tap the profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Add another account.
  3. Select Google for a Google Account, or select the appropriate provider for another email service.
  4. Enter the email address and follow the sign-in prompts.
  5. Complete password, verification, or organization approval steps when requested.

Mail and other enabled data will begin syncing again. The time required depends on the amount of data and the device’s connection. These steps answer “how can I remove an account from the Gmail app” and “how do I remove my account from Gmail app” without permanently deleting the account.
