Before You Change Your Reddit Password
First, check whether you can still sign in and whether you know the username for the account you want to update. Reddit accounts can share an email address, so the username helps you avoid changing the wrong account.
For a standard Reddit account password change while signed in, have your current password ready. You will also need to enter and confirm the new password. Choose a strong password that you do not use for email, banking, or any other account.
If you cannot remember the current password, use the reset process instead. A Reddit password reset normally requires access to the verified email address connected to the account. If you are already signed in, check the email shown under the General section of Account Settings before you begin.
Your sign-in method also matters. An account created through Google or Apple may use that connected account for access instead of a separate Reddit password. Review Connected Accounts in your settings before changing anything.
How to Change Your Reddit Password
The clearest way to complete a Reddit account password change is through Account Settings in a browser.
- Open {site} and sign in to the correct account.
- Select your avatar or profile menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings, then open the Account section. In some layouts this section is labeled Account Settings.
- Find the Change password option under account security.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter the new password, then enter it again to confirm it.
- Save or confirm the change.
If you searched for “Reddit how to change password” or “change my Reddit password,” this is the normal signed-in procedure. Menu wording can vary slightly by screen size, but password controls belong in the account settings rather than profile-editing settings.
If the current password is rejected, do not keep guessing. Sign out only if you are sure you can access the account email, then follow the forgotten-password steps below. That is also the right route when a normal Reddit change password attempt cannot be completed.
How to Reset a Forgotten Reddit Password
Use this process for a Reddit forgot password problem when you cannot sign in.
- Open the Reddit login screen.
- Select Forgot password below the sign-in fields.
- Enter the account username or its connected email address, then select Reset Password.
- Open the message sent to the account email and select the Reset Password button.
- If the email address belongs to multiple Reddit accounts, choose the username whose password you want to reset.
- Enter the new password twice and select Continue.
Entering a valid username tells Reddit to send the message to the email attached to that username. Entering an email address may show a choice of usernames associated with it. This helps identify the correct account without guessing.
The reset link is time-sensitive. If it no longer works, request a new message and use the newest link. Completing a Reddit password reset signs the account out on all devices, so you will need to sign in again with the new password.
If the Password Reset Email Does Not Arrive
First, confirm that you submitted the verified email address connected to the account. A forwarding address may not work if it differs from the address stored by Reddit. If you requested the reset using a username, make sure the spelling and capitalization identify the intended account.
- Check spam, junk, promotions, and other filtered folders.
- Search the inbox for recent messages from Reddit.
- Allow for ordinary email delivery delays, then check again.
- Request another reset and use only the newest message.
- Try other email addresses you may have used with Reddit's username-recovery option.
If you are still signed in somewhere, open Account Settings and confirm or update the email address before trying again. Never send anyone your password or a two-factor authentication code. Reddit says it will not ask for either by email or private message.
If You Cannot Access Your Reddit Email
If you know the password and remain signed in, go to Account Settings and update the email address. In the mobile app, open your profile, select the menu, choose Settings, select your username, and use Update email address. If the account has no email but you can still access it, add and verify one before attempting to reset Reddit password credentials.
If you have forgotten the password and cannot access the verified email, Reddit states that it cannot recover the account or reveal its associated email because it cannot verify ownership. There is no alternate recovery based only on knowing the username.
There is one important security exception. If someone changed or removed the email without your permission, check the original inbox for Reddit's notice about the change. Follow the instructions in that notice. If access is still unavailable, use Reddit Help's request form and choose Security problems, then I think my account has been hacked. Include the affected username and explain what changed. This is a support request, not a recovery guarantee.
Secure Your Account After the Password Change
After a Reddit password change, sign back in only on devices you recognize. A completed reset signs out all devices automatically. If you changed the password while signed in and suspect unauthorized access, open the account activity area and use its option to log out all active sessions.
- Review recent account activity for unfamiliar access.
- Review authorized applications and connected accounts, then remove anything you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Enable two-factor authentication if it is available in your account settings, and store the backup codes safely.
- Keep a current, verified email address on the account.
- Use a long, unique password and store it in a trusted password manager.
- Do not reuse the old password or use the new one on another service.
If you notice unfamiliar posts, votes, messages, applications, or email changes, treat the account as compromised and use Reddit's security support option. These checks complete the Reddit password change process and reduce the chance that another exposed password will affect the account again.
