Check the Current Outage Status
Baltimore Gas and Electric, usually called BGE, provides electric service in Baltimore. To check a current power outage in Baltimore, open {site} and choose the outage map or outage status option.
The map shows known outage areas and may display the approximate number of customers affected. Zoom in or search the relevant area instead of relying only on the citywide totals. A nearby outage does not necessarily include your property.
For information tied to your service address, open the Outage Tracker. You can sign in to My Account or continue through the available guest verification process. The tracker protects account details when it is used without a full account sign-in.
If the map does not show your location, the outage may not have been reported yet. Report your loss of service so BGE can associate it with the correct property. During a large power outage, map and status information may change as crews inspect equipment and receive new reports.
Report a Power Outage
Use BGE’s official Report an Outage tool to submit the problem online. The form may ask for the primary phone number associated with the account or the BGE account number. Have one of these ready before you begin.
- Select Report an Outage.
- Enter the requested account identification information.
- Confirm the service location shown on the screen.
- Submit the report and save any confirmation or status information.
A customer who already uses My Account can sign in and report the outage from the account dashboard. BGE also offers reporting through its official mobile app and enrolled text-alert service. Use only a method you previously set up or one identified on BGE’s official site.
If you are reporting for a landlord, relative, or another person, make sure you have the correct service address and authorized account details. Do not guess at an account number or select a similar-looking address.
Get Restoration Updates
After an outage is connected to your location, the Outage Tracker is the main place to follow restoration progress. An estimated restoration time may appear there after BGE assesses the incident. The estimate can be revised as crews inspect damage or complete repairs, so check the latest status instead of relying on an earlier screenshot.
My Account users can review notification preferences and manage available outage alerts. Depending on the contact methods offered for the account, updates may be delivered by text, email, or phone notification. Confirm that the saved contact details are current and that outage notifications are enabled.
If you use guest access, return to the tracker and verify the account again when you want an update. A general map can show conditions around Baltimore, while the tracker provides information associated with the verified service location.
What to Do Before Reporting
Make a few quick checks only if it is safe. These steps can help tell whether the power outage affects one property or the surrounding area:
- Look through a window to see whether nearby homes, streetlights, or common areas also appear to have lost power.
- Check whether every room is affected or only one circuit.
- See whether a breaker has tripped. Reset it only if there is no smoke, burning smell, water near the panel, visible damage, or other unsafe condition.
- Ask a neighbor or building manager whether they also lost service.
- In an apartment building, check whether the issue involves shared equipment or only your unit.
If only part of the property is affected, or breakers trip again, the problem may be inside the building. Leave electrical repairs to a qualified professional. If nearby properties are also dark, report the outage and check the official map.
Outage Safety Guidance
Treat every fallen or hanging wire as energized. Stay well away, keep children and pets back, and do not touch the wire or anything it contacts. Never drive over a downed line. Report the hazard to BGE from a safe location; contact emergency services if there is immediate danger.
Turn off or unplug sensitive electrical equipment to reduce the chance of damage when service returns. Leave one light switched on so you can tell when power has been restored. Avoid opening refrigerators and freezers more than necessary.
Operate a portable generator outdoors, far from doors, windows, vents, and attached spaces. Never run one in a home, garage, basement, or enclosed area. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use proper connections, and never connect a generator directly to household wiring unless approved transfer equipment has been installed by a qualified electrician. An improper connection can endanger occupants and utility workers.
Do not approach damaged electrical equipment, a sparking panel, or equipment exposed to standing water. Move to safety if you see smoke, fire, or signs of an electrical hazard.
Contact Outage Support
Contact BGE directly when you cannot submit an outage online, the tracker shows the wrong service location, your power remains off after nearby service returns, or you need to report damaged utility equipment. Use the verified contact options shown on this page or select Contact Us on {site}.
Utility support handles outage reports, status questions, and hazards involving BGE equipment. A building owner or qualified electrician may need to address damage on the customer’s side of the service connection.
Call emergency services instead of waiting for utility support when there is a fire, serious injury, immediate threat to life, or another dangerous situation requiring urgent help. Keep away from the hazard and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
