How to Launch an App on Google Play

Updated 2026-08-17 · 993 words

Open the Google Play Store App

Start on the Home screen of a supported Android phone or tablet. Look for the multicolored triangle icon labeled Play Store. Tap it once to launch the Google Play Store app.

If the icon is not on the Home screen, swipe up to open the full list of apps. You can then scroll to Play Store or use the device search box. Some devices place the icon inside a folder named Google.

Wait for the store’s main screen to load before continuing. If you are asked to choose an account, select the Google account you normally use on this device. You may also need to accept an on-screen notice before the store opens.

These steps are the usual way to launch the Google Play app. The icon location and menu names can vary slightly by device maker and Android version.

Find the App in Google Play

Tap the search box near the top of the store. Enter the app’s complete name, then tap the search key on the keyboard. If several results appear, do not choose one based only on a similar icon.

Check the app name and developer name carefully. Compare the icon with one you recognize from the service or from another trusted device. Avoid listings with misspelled names or a different developer. Tap the matching result to open its details page.

The details page shows the app name, developer, description, screenshots, compatibility information, and the button used to install or open it. Reaching this page is often what people mean when they ask how to launch app in Google Play Store, but the next action depends on whether the app is already installed.

Launch an Installed App

If the app is installed and available on the device, its Google Play details page normally shows an Open button. Tap Open and wait for the app to start. This lets you launch app on Google Play without returning to the Home screen.

An Update button may appear as well. If Open is available, you can usually tap it immediately. If the app requires a newer version before it can run correctly, follow the update prompt and try Open again after the update finishes.

After the first launch, you can also open the app from its own icon on the Home screen or in the full app list. You do not have to enter Google Play every time. Using the Open button is simply a direct way to launch app on Google Play Store when you already have its listing open.

Install the App Before Opening It

If the details page shows Install instead of Open, the app is not currently installed for this device profile. Tap Install and keep the device connected while Google Play downloads and sets up the app.

When installation finishes, the Install button changes to Open. Tap Open to launch the app. You can also leave Google Play, locate the new app icon, and tap that icon.

If installation remains pending, check whether another app is being downloaded or updated. Confirm that the device has a working connection, enough free storage, and permission to install apps through Google Play. Restarting the device can also clear a stalled installation.

If Google Play or the App Will Not Open

If you cannot launch the Google Play Store app or the selected app, begin with these basic checks:

  • Swipe up and search the full app list in case the icon was removed from the Home screen but the app remains installed.
  • Restart the phone or tablet, then try opening Google Play again.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if the store stays blank, displays a loading error, or cannot complete a search.
  • Turn Airplane mode off and confirm that the device shows an active connection.
  • Open the device settings, select Apps, and find Google Play Store or the affected app. If an Enable button appears, tap it.
  • In the same app settings, use Force stop, then return to the app list and try opening the app again.
  • Check for Android system updates and Google Play system updates in the device settings.
  • Make sure the date and time are set automatically. An incorrect setting can interfere with store connections.

If Google Play opens but the other app closes immediately, restart the device and check the app’s Play Store page for an available update. You can also open its device settings and clear its cache. Clearing storage is different and may remove local app data, so do not select that option unless you understand the effect.

A device managed by an employer, school, or family administrator may restrict Google Play or particular apps. In that case, the device administrator controls whether the app can be enabled or installed.

Account and Device Checks

Google Play results and installed apps can differ by account and device. To check the active account, open the Play Store and tap the profile picture in the upper corner. The account shown at the top is currently active. If more than one account is listed, select the one you normally use with this device, then search for the app again.

Also confirm that you are using the intended Android profile. A work profile, guest profile, or secondary user may have a separate app list. An app installed under one profile may not show an Open button under another.

If the listing says the app is unavailable for the device, review the compatibility message on its details page. The device may need a newer Android version, particular hardware, or an allowed profile. Updating Android may help when an update is offered, but compatibility is determined by the app listing and the device.

Once the correct account and profile are active, search again, open the verified listing, and tap Open or Install. That is the complete process to launch the Google Play Store app, find the intended listing, and start the app on a supported device.
