How to Reset a Laptop to Factory Settings

Updated 2026-08-21 · 1035 words

What does a laptop factory reset do?

A laptop factory reset reinstalls the operating system and can remove personal files, installed apps, accounts, and changed settings. A reset is different from a restart: restarting simply turns the laptop off and on without intentionally erasing data.

The exact result depends on the reset option. Windows can keep personal files while removing apps and settings, or remove everything. A Mac reset can erase user accounts, files, settings, and installed software before returning the computer to its setup screen.

If the laptop is being transferred to someone else, choose the option that removes personal data. Do not assume that signing out of an account or deleting a few folders has erased the entire laptop.

What should you do before resetting a laptop?

Back up anything you cannot replace before starting a laptop factory reset. Once data has been erased, recovery is not guaranteed.

  • Copy documents, photos, videos, browser bookmarks, and other important files to external storage or a trusted cloud account.
  • Confirm that the backup opens and contains the expected files.
  • Record passwords, software license keys, email settings, and Wi-Fi details you may need afterward.
  • Make sure you know the Microsoft Account or Apple Account credentials connected to the laptop.
  • Disconnect storage devices that should not be erased.
  • Plug the laptop into power. A reset can take time, and loss of power may interrupt it.

If the drive uses BitLocker or another encryption feature, have the recovery key available. Windows Recovery may request it before allowing certain actions.

How do you factory reset a Windows laptop?

On current Windows laptops, the Reset this PC feature is available in Settings. Menu wording can vary slightly by Windows version.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select System, then Recovery. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Recovery.
  3. Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC or Get started.
  4. Choose Keep my files to preserve files in your user folders while removing apps and settings. Choose Remove everything to erase personal files, apps, and settings.
  5. Choose Cloud download to obtain fresh Windows installation files, or Local reinstall to use files already stored on the laptop.
  6. Review the additional settings carefully. If the laptop is leaving your possession, select the available option to clean the drive as well as remove files.
  7. Read the summary, select Reset, and leave the laptop connected to power while Windows restarts and reinstalls.

The laptop may restart several times. Do not force it off merely because the screen remains unchanged for a while.

How do you factory reset a laptop that will not boot?

A Windows laptop that cannot reach the desktop may still open Windows Recovery Environment, a built-in set of startup and repair tools.

  1. Turn on the laptop. When the Windows logo or manufacturer logo appears, hold the power button until the laptop turns off.
  2. Repeat the interrupted startup once. On the next startup, Windows should enter Automatic Repair.
  3. Select Advanced options, then Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Reset this PC.
  5. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, then follow the prompts.

If Windows Recovery does not appear, use the manufacturer’s documented recovery method for that exact model. Recovery keys differ between manufacturers, so avoid trying unconfirmed shortcuts. If the internal drive is missing from recovery tools or reports errors, a reset may not complete.

How do you factory reset a Mac laptop?

Newer Mac laptops may offer Erase Assistant, which Apple labels Erase All Content and Settings. On macOS Ventura or later, open the Apple menu, select System Settings, choose General, then Transfer or Reset, and select Erase All Content and Settings. On macOS Monterey, open System Preferences and select Erase All Content and Settings from the System Preferences menu.

  1. Open Erase All Content and Settings.
  2. Enter the administrator password when requested.
  3. Review what will be removed and continue through the prompts.
  4. Enter the Apple Account password if requested, then confirm the erase.
  5. Allow the Mac to restart and display the setup assistant.

If Erase All Content and Settings is unavailable, use macOS Recovery. Shut down the Mac first. On a Mac with Apple silicon, press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then select Options and Continue. On an Intel-based Mac, turn it on and immediately hold Command and R until the Apple logo or another startup screen appears.

In macOS Recovery, open Disk Utility, select the internal startup volume, and choose Erase. After erasing, close Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS. Disk names and volume groups can vary, so confirm that the selected item is the internal startup disk before erasing it.

What should you do after a laptop factory reset?

  1. Complete the Windows or macOS setup screens.
  2. Reconnect to a trusted Wi-Fi network and sign in with the appropriate Microsoft Account or Apple Account.
  3. Install operating-system updates and restart when prompted.
  4. Reinstall essential software from its official source.
  5. Restore personal files from the verified backup.
  6. Check that sound, camera, keyboard, trackpad, and network connections work.

If the laptop is going to another person, stop when the initial setup screen appears. The next user can enter their own account and preferences.

What should you do if a laptop factory reset fails?

If a laptop factory reset appears stuck, keep it connected to power and allow adequate time, especially during drive cleaning or a cloud reinstall. Repeatedly forcing the laptop off can make startup problems worse.

  • If Windows reports that the reset could not be completed, return to Windows Recovery and try Startup Repair before attempting Reset this PC again.
  • If Cloud download fails, check the internet connection or try Local reinstall. If Local reinstall fails because system files are damaged, try Cloud download.
  • If the Mac erase process fails, restart macOS Recovery, open Disk Utility, and run First Aid on the internal drive before trying again.
  • If the laptop restarts to a blank screen, disconnect nonessential accessories and perform one normal power restart.
  • If recovery tools cannot find the internal drive, the drive may need hardware diagnosis rather than another reset attempt.

Write down any error message exactly as shown. The manufacturer’s support team or a repair technician will need the wording and the laptop’s model information to identify the next safe step.
