For an IRS e file login, open {site} and choose the IRS account or e-file service that matches what you need to do. The official IRS e-file sign-in process may transfer you to ID.me for secure login and identity verification.
This independent reference page is not operated by or affiliated with the IRS. Never send passwords, verification codes, Social Security numbers, tax records, or filing credentials to a website or person claiming to provide unofficial login help.
Where is the official IRS E-File login?
Start at the official IRS site instead of selecting a sponsored search result or typing an address from a message. IRS.gov pages use a government domain and a secure connection, but a familiar IRS logo alone does not prove that a page is genuine.
- Open {site}.
- Find the account or service section for individuals, businesses, or tax professionals.
- Select the relevant sign-in option.
- Confirm that any identity-provider page was opened by the IRS process, rather than from an email or text message.
Search phrases such as “irs efile login” and “irs e-file login” can produce pages for tax software, filing companies, or general account help. Those pages are not necessarily the IRS electronic filing login. Do not enter credentials after following an unexpected message, advertisement, or shortened address.
How do I sign in to IRS E-File?
ID.me is the identity provider the IRS uses for access to many online services. An existing ID.me user normally enters the email address and password for that account, then completes the multifactor authentication method already connected to it.
- Choose the required IRS account or e-file service.
- Select the option to sign in with ID.me.
- Enter the credentials on the secure ID.me screen.
- Complete the displayed security check, such as an authentication-app prompt or another registered method.
- Review any IRS terms shown and continue to the selected service.
A new user may be asked to create an ID.me account and verify identity. The official process can require a personal email address, a unique password, multifactor authentication, an SSN or ITIN, and an accepted government-issued photo ID. Follow only the requirements displayed during the official session; this page cannot collect or verify that information.
Which IRS E-File account should I use?
“IRS e file account login” can refer to several different portals. Choose by task, not simply by the word “e-file.”
- Individual Online Account: Although the required HTML tags don't allow strong; need avoid. Use for viewing a taxpayer’s own account information and available personal tax services. It is not the professional e-file provider portal.
- Business Tax Account: Use for supported account tasks performed for a business when the user has the required authority.
- Tax Pro Account: Use for supported professional authorization work, including eligible power-of-attorney and tax-information authorization tasks.
- IRS e-Services: Use for professional tools such as an e-file provider application, Transcript Delivery System, and other approved e-services.
- Modernized e-File, or MeF: Use by registered and approved filers to transmit supported returns and retrieve acknowledgments. It is not the normal place for an individual taxpayer to prepare a personal return.
- PTIN system: Use for preparer tax identification number account tasks; a PTIN login is not automatically the same destination as MeF or Tax Pro Account.
If you want to login to IRS efile as a taxpayer, first identify the specific filing or account service you used. If you are a professional trying to login to IRS e file, begin in the IRS tax-professional or e-Services area and select the named product required for your work.
What if I forgot my IRS E-File username or password?
For an ID.me-based IRS efile account login, use the password-reset or sign-in-help option displayed by ID.me. Follow its prompts rather than creating repeated accounts with different email addresses.
If you are unsure whether an ID.me account already exists, the IRS says the account-creation process can identify an existing account and direct you toward password recovery. Recovery options depend on the account and security methods already registered, so use only the choices shown on the official screen.
If identity verification fails, open the ID.me help option provided during the IRS sign-in process. The official service may offer document troubleshooting or a video-chat identity-verification route. Never ask an unofficial helper to receive a security code or control your screen.
Why is my IRS E-File login not working?
A rejected IRS electronic filing login does not always mean the password is wrong. Check the exact service name and copy the complete error code before trying again.
- Rejected credentials: Confirm that you used the email address tied to ID.me and entered the password without added spaces.
- Locked or challenged account: Stop repeated attempts and follow the recovery choice displayed on the sign-in page.
- Verification-code problem: Use another authentication method only if the official screen offers one. Check the registered device, message filtering, and device time.
- Identity mismatch: Read the error carefully. A difference between account information and government records may require correction through the organization named in the official instructions.
- Unavailable service: Check the IRS service-status or maintenance notice for the specific product, especially MeF or e-Services.
- Browser problem: Close duplicate sign-in tabs, allow required cookies, update the browser, or retry in a private window. Do not disable security protections or install software suggested by a pop-up.
Some IRS error pages provide alternatives for completing a task without online account access. Use the alternative named on the official error page when sign-in cannot continue.
How do I contact IRS E-File support?
Use the verified contact block on this page or the Help with e-Services section on IRS.gov. Tax professionals can also review the e-Services help material, MeF status information, official publications, and the IRS chatbot options shown for their service. ID.me account creation, password recovery, multifactor authentication, and identity-verification failures should be directed to the ID.me help center reached from the official sign-in flow.
Before contacting support, record the service name, the complete error code, what happened immediately before the error, the date and approximate time, and the browser and device type. Do not include a password, security code, full taxpayer identification number, tax return, or filing credential in a general support message.
