IRS Amended Return Status: How to Check Online
Check your IRS amended return status with the IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool, which tracks Form 1040-X through received, adjusted, and completed stages. The IRS says status information normally becomes available about three weeks after you submit the amended return.
Use the amended-return tracker rather than “Where’s My Refund?” The regular refund tracker does not show the status of Form 1040-X.
What do you need to check an IRS amended return status?
Have the identifying information from the amended return ready before opening the IRS status tool. Enter the information exactly as it appeared on the return.
- Your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, also called an ITIN
- Your date of birth
- Your ZIP code or postal code
- The tax year covered by the amended return
The IRS uses the first three items to verify your identity. The tax year helps you select the correct filing if the system finds amended returns for more than one year. The tool covers the current tax year and as many as three prior tax years.
If your ZIP code has changed since you filed, start with the ZIP code shown on Form 1040-X. Do not enter the expected refund amount or filing status; those details belong to the regular refund tracker, not the amended-return tracker.
How do you check your amended return status online?
- Open {site} and find “Where’s My Amended Return?” under the refund or filing tools.
- Select the option to check an amended return.
- Choose English or Spanish if the tool asks for a language.
- Enter your Social Security number or ITIN, date of birth, and ZIP code or postal code.
- Select the applicable tax year if more than one amended return is available.
- Review the displayed stage and any instructions provided for your return.
The tracker may show a received date, an adjustment date, or a message telling you what to do next. Follow a request to contact the IRS if the tool specifically displays one.
Do not use “Where’s My Refund?” to look for the IRS status of an amended return. That tool tracks ordinary refund processing and uses different identifying information.
How do you check an amended return status by phone?
The IRS provides an automated telephone line specifically for Form 1040-X status checks. Use the verified amended-return number in the contact block above this article; the number is also listed by the IRS with its refund contact options.
The automated system asks for identifying details such as your Social Security number or taxpayer identification number, date of birth, and ZIP code. Have the tax year of the amended return available in case the system asks you to choose among multiple filings.
Wait about three weeks after filing before using the automated line. According to the IRS, the online and telephone tools contain the same current status information, so calling early generally will not reveal a return that has not entered the system.
What do the amended return status messages mean?
- Received: The IRS has received the amended return and is processing it. This status confirms receipt but does not mean the IRS has finished reviewing the changes.
- Adjusted: The IRS made an adjustment to the tax account. The adjustment may produce a refund, an amount due, or no change in tax. The status alone does not explain the final figures.
- Completed: The IRS has finished processing the amended return. The IRS sends the information connected with the result by mail, so watch for an official notice.
An adjusted or completed status does not guarantee the outcome you expected. Read the mailed notice for the IRS explanation and instructions rather than relying only on the short tracker message.
How long does an IRS amended return usually take?
The IRS currently says Form 1040-X generally takes eight to twelve weeks to process, although some amended returns may take as long as sixteen weeks. Status information may take about three weeks after submission to appear in “Where’s My Amended Return?”
These are processing estimates, not promised completion dates. An amended return can take longer if it contains errors, is incomplete or unsigned, requires additional information, is affected by identity theft or fraud, or needs review by a specialized IRS unit.
Continue checking the tool during the normal processing period. The IRS says to call about the return only when the tracker directs you to contact the agency or when more than sixteen weeks have passed since you mailed the amended return.
What should you do if your amended return status has not updated?
If no IRS amended return status appears during the first three weeks, wait until that initial period has passed and check again. Confirm that the Social Security number or ITIN, birth date, and ZIP code match the amended return exactly.
If the status remains “Received,” that does not by itself mean the return is lost. Processing may still be underway, and repeatedly submitting Form 1040-X can create confusion rather than speed up the existing filing.
The tracker does not cover every type of filing. It may not provide results for amended business returns, carryback claims, injured-spouse claims, returns with a foreign address, a regular Form 1040 merely marked amended or corrected, or returns handled by specialized units such as Examination or Bankruptcy.
Check your mail for an IRS request or notice. The IRS states that it will contact you if it needs more information. If more than sixteen weeks have passed, or the tracker tells you to call, use the verified IRS contact information above and have a copy of Form 1040-X available.
