How to Change Your iPhone Password
To change the passcode that unlocks your iPhone, open Settings, select Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, enter the current passcode, and select Change Passcode. To change your Apple Account password, open Settings, select your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and select Change Password.
Which iPhone password do you need to change?
An iPhone can use several passwords and passcodes for different purposes. Identify which one is causing the problem before changing anything.
- The device passcode is the numeric or alphanumeric code used to unlock the iPhone and approve certain security changes.
- The Apple Account password protects Apple services, account information, and data stored with Apple. Apple Account is the current name for what was previously called an Apple ID.
- The Screen Time passcode controls content restrictions, app limits, and Screen Time setting changes. It can differ from the device passcode.
- Saved website and app passwords belong to individual services. On newer iPhone software, they are managed in the Passwords app. On some earlier versions, they appear under Passwords in Settings.
If a website or third-party app rejects a password, changing the iPhone device passcode will not change that service’s password.
How do you change your iPhone passcode?
You must know the current device passcode to replace it through Settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select Face ID & Passcode on an iPhone with Face ID, or Touch ID & Passcode on an iPhone with a Home button and Touch ID.
- Enter the current device passcode.
- Scroll down and select Change Passcode.
- Enter the current passcode again if prompted.
- Enter a new passcode, then enter it again to confirm.
Select Passcode Options on the new-passcode screen if you want to use a supported code type other than the default. Choose a code you can remember but that another person cannot easily guess.
An iPhone password change may require you to sign in again or confirm security settings. Face ID or Touch ID does not replace the passcode; the iPhone will still request the passcode in certain situations.
How do you change your Apple Account password on an iPhone?
An authenticated iPhone is a device already signed in to your Apple Account and protected by its device passcode. If the iPhone is authenticated, you can usually update the Apple Account password from Settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select your name at the top of the screen.
- Select Sign-In & Security.
- Select Change Password.
- Enter the iPhone device passcode if requested.
- Enter the new Apple Account password twice, then follow the displayed confirmation steps.
After an Apple Account password change, other Apple devices or services may ask for the new password. Read each prompt carefully before removing devices or signing out, because signing out can affect access to synchronized data.
What should you do if you forgot your iPhone passcode?
A forgotten iPhone passcode cannot normally be displayed or recovered from the device. Follow Apple’s official recovery process, which may require erasing the iPhone and setting it up again.
First, check the locked screen for an official Forgot Passcode option. Availability depends on the iPhone software, its connection status, and how the device was configured. If Apple offers an on-screen recovery choice, follow each prompt and be prepared to verify the Apple Account associated with the iPhone.
If no usable recovery option appears, Apple’s official process may require a Mac or Windows computer to place the iPhone in recovery mode and restore it. Restoring erases the device. You can restore personal data afterward only if a suitable backup exists.
Some recent software versions may offer a limited opportunity to use the previous passcode after a recent passcode change. Use that option only when it appears on the iPhone; do not assume it will be available.
Activation Lock may require the associated Apple Account credentials after erasure. Apple Support cannot provide a bypass for the device passcode or Activation Lock.
What should you do if you forgot your Apple Account password?
Use a trusted Apple device first. A trusted device is one already signed in to the Apple Account and able to receive or approve identity checks.
- On a trusted iPhone, open Settings and select your name.
- Select Sign-In & Security, then Change Password.
- Use the device passcode and complete the displayed verification steps.
If no trusted device is available, use Apple’s official password-reset process through the Apple Support app on a borrowed Apple device or through the account recovery options provided by Apple. Account recovery is used when Apple cannot immediately verify the account holder.
Keep access to the trusted phone number and email addresses associated with the account when possible. Enter verification information exactly as requested, and do not repeatedly start new recovery requests unless Apple instructs you to do so.
Why can’t you change an iPhone password or passcode?
If an iPhone password change does not work, the cause may be a restriction, failed verification, or an additional security safeguard.
- If Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode is missing, search within Settings and check whether the iPhone is managed by an employer or school.
- If a verification code never arrives, confirm that the trusted phone number is correct and that the trusted device has a working connection. Use another verification choice shown on the screen if one is offered.
- If the iPhone reports a security delay, Stolen Device Protection may be requiring a waiting period or familiar location before a sensitive account change. Follow the on-screen instructions rather than repeatedly restarting the change.
- If Change Password is unavailable, check Screen Time restrictions and any installed management profile. Only the organization managing the iPhone may be able to change its restrictions.
- If the Apple Account is locked, verification information is unavailable, or recovery repeatedly fails, open {site} and use the verified Apple Support options shown there.
Do not use software or services claiming to bypass an iPhone passcode, Apple Account verification, or Activation Lock. Official Apple recovery is the appropriate route when the required credentials are unavailable.
