If you forgot your iPad passcode, the supported way to regain access is to erase the iPad and set it up again. The passcode cannot be recovered or bypassed, but you can restore your data afterward if you have an iCloud or computer backup.

Choose the on-screen reset option, Find My, or recovery mode based on what devices and account information you have available.

How can you tell when your iPad is locked out?

After several incorrect passcode attempts, the iPad temporarily blocks more attempts. The screen may show “iPad Unavailable,” “Security Lockout,” or a message telling you to try again after a set time.

Waiting for the timer only gives you another chance to enter the correct passcode. If you cannot remember it, additional guesses can increase the waiting period or leave the iPad unavailable.

Erasing the iPad removes its passcode along with the data stored on the device. Activation Lock may remain; this security feature requires the Apple Account previously associated with the iPad before the device can be used again.

What do you need before resetting an iPad with a forgotten passcode?

  • A Mac or Windows computer for the recovery-mode method.
  • A compatible cable for connecting the iPad to the computer.
  • Finder on a current Mac, or iTunes or the Apple Devices app on a compatible computer.
  • Your Apple Account email address or phone number and password.
  • Another connected device or access to Find My if you plan to erase the iPad remotely.
  • An iCloud or computer backup if you want to restore personal data afterward.

Charge the iPad and computer before starting. If the iPad belongs to an employer, school, or another person, contact the organization or owner because device management and Activation Lock may prevent you from completing setup.

How do you reset a locked iPad using iTunes or Finder?

Recovery mode is a special startup state that lets a computer erase and reinstall the iPad software. Use this method when the iPad does not offer an on-screen reset option or cannot be erased through Find My.

  1. Turn off the iPad. Disconnect it from the computer first if necessary.
  2. Identify the correct recovery-mode button. On an iPad without a Home button, use the top button. On an iPad with a Home button, use the Home button.
  3. Connect the iPad to the computer while holding the recovery-mode button. Keep holding it until the recovery-mode screen appears. Do not release the button when the Apple logo first appears.
  4. Open Finder on a Mac, or iTunes or the Apple Devices app on a compatible computer. Select the iPad when it appears.
  5. Choose Restore when the computer offers Restore or Update. Restore erases the iPad and installs its software again.
  6. Keep the iPad connected while the software downloads and the restore completes. If the download takes long enough that the iPad leaves recovery mode, let the download finish and then repeat the recovery-mode steps.
  7. When the setup screen appears, disconnect the iPad and begin setup.

If the computer does not detect the iPad, try another compatible cable or USB port, restart the computer, and confirm that Finder, iTunes, or the Apple Devices app is current.

How do you reset an iPad using Find My?

Find My can erase a locked iPad remotely only if Find My was enabled on that iPad and the device can connect to the internet. You also need access to the Apple Account associated with the device.

  1. Open the Find My app on another Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account. You can also open {site} and use the Find Devices option.
  2. Select Devices, then select the locked iPad.
  3. Choose Erase This Device or Erase iPad.
  4. Review the warning and confirm the request with the required Apple Account credentials.
  5. Wait for the iPad to come online. If it is offline, the erase request remains pending until it connects.
  6. After erasing, follow the setup prompts and enter the associated Apple Account credentials when Activation Lock asks for them.

Removing the iPad from the account is not the same as erasing it. Do not remove it merely to avoid Activation Lock; keep the device associated with the rightful owner and complete the ownership check during setup.

Can you reset an iPad without a computer?

A computer is not always required. Some supported iPad software versions show “Forgot Passcode?” or an erase/reset option on the unavailable screen after repeated failed attempts.

The on-device method generally requires an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection, Find My to have been enabled, and the password for the Apple Account already signed in on the iPad.

  1. Tap “Forgot Passcode?” or the available erase/reset option on the lock screen.
  2. Select the option to start an iPad reset.
  3. Enter the Apple Account password when prompted.
  4. Confirm that you want to erase the device.
  5. After the iPad restarts, set it up and restore an available backup.

If that option does not appear and Find My cannot reach the iPad, there is no supported computer-free way to remove the forgotten passcode. Use recovery mode with a computer or ask official Apple Support for help.

How do you restore your data after resetting an iPad?

During setup, choose an iCloud backup or a backup stored on a Mac or Windows computer. Sign in with the Apple Account used for that backup and select the most appropriate backup by its date and device name.

Content that was never synchronized or backed up cannot normally be recovered after the erase. Keep the iPad connected to power and Wi-Fi while apps, photos, messages, and settings continue restoring.

Create a new passcode that you can remember but other people cannot guess. Store it in a trusted password manager, keep the Apple Account recovery information current, and turn on regular backups to reduce the impact of another lockout.

When should you contact Apple Support about a locked iPad?

Contact official Apple Support if recovery mode repeatedly fails, the computer never recognizes the iPad, the Apple Account password cannot be reset, or Activation Lock shows an account you do not recognize.

Have the iPad model, serial number if available, Apple Account information, and valid proof of ownership ready. Apple may need to confirm ownership before helping with Activation Lock. Support cannot retrieve a forgotten device passcode or restore data that was not backed up.

Open {site} and choose the iPad support category to review official help options. Avoid third-party passcode-bypass tools or services, because they may put your data and account credentials at risk.
