HP Support Assistant Download: Step by Step

Updated 2026-08-23 ยท 908 words

How do you download HP Support Assistant?

HP Support Assistant is HP own maintenance app for HP computers. It checks for driver and firmware updates, runs hardware tests, and opens support cases. On many HP machines it is already installed, so the first step is to look for it rather than download anything.

If it is genuinely missing, take it from HP directly at the company’s official website and search that site for the support assistant download. Do not take the first result from a search engine: repackaged copies on third-party download sites are a common way to end up with bundled software you never asked for.

How do you check whether HP Support Assistant is already installed?

  1. Press the Windows key and start typing "HP Support Assistant". If it appears in the results, it is installed and you are done downloading.
  2. If nothing appears, open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, and scroll to the entries beginning with HP.
  3. Look on the taskbar and in the hidden icon tray. The app often runs in the background with no window open.
  4. Check for a dedicated help key on the keyboard. On many HP laptops one function key opens the app directly.

An entry that exists but will not open is a repair job, not a download job. Skip to the section on an app that will not start.

How do you install HP Support Assistant on Windows?

  1. Sign in to Windows with an account that has administrator rights. Installation will fail without them, usually with a vague error.
  2. Open the HP site and find the support assistant download page. Confirm the address before clicking anything.
  3. Start the download and let it finish completely. A part-downloaded installer produces a corrupt-file error that looks like a compatibility problem.
  4. Open your Downloads folder and locate the installer file rather than launching it from the browser bar.
  5. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator, even if a plain double-click seems to work.
  6. Accept the permission prompt, follow the installer, and let it finish without closing the window.
  7. Open the app and let it identify your computer. It reads the model itself; you should not have to type it in.
  8. Restart the computer if it asks. Driver tools that skip the restart report odd results afterwards.

What if the HP Support Assistant installer will not run?

  • The browser blocked the file. Look for a warning banner and choose to keep the download, then run it.
  • Windows showed a blue protection screen. Select the option to see more information, then choose to run anyway, but only if you downloaded it from the HP site yourself.
  • Antivirus quarantined the installer. Check the security app history; the file may simply be gone from Downloads.
  • You are on a work or school computer. Managed machines block installers, and no local workaround exists. Ask whoever administers the device.
  • The download is incomplete. Compare the file size against what the page states, delete it, and download again on a stable connection.
  • The disk is nearly full. Free some space and retry; installers fail quietly when they cannot unpack.

Does HP Support Assistant work on a Mac, a Chromebook, or a non-HP PC?

HP Support Assistant is built for HP computers running Windows. On a Mac or a Chromebook, it is not the tool for the job, and no download of it will help. On a non-HP Windows PC, the app has no matching product to identify and will not deliver drivers for another manufacturer hardware.

If your actual problem is an HP printer rather than an HP computer, that is a different piece of software with a different name. Searching for the printer model on the HP site leads to the right one.

How do you find your HP product number before you can get support?

The product number is not the same as the model name printed on the lid, and support asks for the product number. Look in these places:

  • The label on the underside of a laptop, or on the back or side of a desktop.
  • Under a removable battery, on older laptops.
  • Inside the app itself, on the my devices screen, if it is already installed.
  • In Windows system information, which lists the system model.

Write down the product number and the serial number together. They are different values, and support will ask which one you are reading.

What if HP Support Assistant opens but finds no updates?

  1. Check that it identified the right machine. A wrong product means a wrong driver list.
  2. Run the check again while connected by cable or on a stable network. A dropped connection mid-check reports nothing found.
  3. Look for an update to the app itself, then re-run the check.
  4. Install pending Windows updates first, since some HP drivers arrive through Windows rather than through the app.
  5. Search the HP site for your product number and compare the driver list there against what the app showed.

What if HP Support Assistant will not open after an update?

Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, find the HP entry, open its advanced options, and choose Repair. If repair does nothing, uninstall the app, restart the computer, and install a fresh copy from the HP site. Restarting between the uninstall and the reinstall matters more than it sounds.

If it opens and closes instantly, a pending Windows update or a driver installed halfway is the usual cause. Finish those first, then try again.
