To hard reset an iPhone 8 when you forgot the passcode, erase it through recovery mode or use the lock-screen erase option available on supported iOS versions. Erasing the iPhone removes the passcode, but it also deletes the data currently stored on the device.

What does a hard reset do on an iPhone 8?

The phrase “hard reset iPhone 8” can mean two different procedures. A forced restart turns the iPhone off and back on without deleting data, while an erase restores factory settings and removes the forgotten passcode.

A forced restart cannot unlock an iPhone 8. Its button sequence is pressing and quickly releasing Volume Up, pressing and quickly releasing Volume Down, and then holding the side button until the Apple logo appears.

To regain access without the passcode, you must erase the iPhone. Photos, messages, apps, settings, and other information stored only on the phone will be lost. You can recover information afterward only if it was included in an iCloud or computer backup or was already syncing with iCloud.

What do you need before you hard reset an iPhone 8?

For recovery mode, prepare the following:

  • A Mac or Windows PC connected to the internet.
  • A compatible cable that can connect the iPhone 8 to the computer.
  • Finder on a recent Mac, the Apple Devices app on a Windows PC, or iTunes on an older compatible system.
  • The Apple Account email address or phone number and password associated with the iPhone.

If you plan to erase the iPhone from its lock screen, the device must have iOS 15.2 or later, an active cellular or Wi-Fi connection, and Find My already enabled.

You normally cannot create a fresh backup after you are locked out. Before erasing, check another Apple device for the date of the latest iCloud backup. You can also check Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes for an existing computer backup. Any information added after the latest backup may be lost.

How do you hard reset an iPhone 8 with recovery mode?

Recovery mode lets a computer reinstall iOS and erase an iPhone whose passcode is unavailable. Keep the iPhone connected while the computer downloads and installs the software.

  1. Connect the iPhone 8 to the Mac or Windows PC with the cable.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  3. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  4. Press and hold the side button. Keep holding it after the Apple logo appears, and release it only when the recovery-mode screen shows a cable and computer.
  5. Open Finder on a recent Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes where applicable. Select the iPhone when it appears.
  6. When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Restore. Confirm the erase if another prompt appears. Restore downloads iOS, erases the iPhone, and installs the operating system again.
  7. Wait for the process to finish. If the download takes long enough that the iPhone leaves recovery mode, let the download finish and then repeat the recovery-mode button sequence.

Do not choose Update when the goal is to remove a forgotten passcode. Updating attempts to reinstall iOS without performing the erase required to remove that passcode.

How do you erase an iPhone 8 without a computer?

An iPhone 8 running iOS 15.2 or later may offer an on-device reset after repeated incorrect passcode attempts. This method requires Find My to have been enabled beforehand, a network connection, and the password for the Apple Account signed in on the iPhone.

  1. Enter passcode attempts from the lock screen until iPhone Unavailable or Security Lockout appears and the reset option becomes available.
  2. On iOS 17 or later, tap Forgot Passcode?, then tap Start iPhone Reset. On iOS 15.2 or iOS 16, tap Erase iPhone.
  3. Enter the associated Apple Account password when asked. This signs the account out on the device and authorizes the erase.
  4. Tap Erase iPhone to confirm that all data and settings should be permanently deleted.
  5. Wait for the iPhone to restart and display the setup screen.

If Forgot Passcode? or Erase iPhone never appears, confirm that the phone has a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. If the option remains unavailable, use recovery mode with a computer.

How do you get back into an iPhone 8 after the reset?

After the iPhone 8 restarts, follow the onscreen setup instructions, select a language and region, and connect to Wi-Fi. Sign in with the Apple Account previously associated with the phone when prompted.

Choose Restore from iCloud Backup to recover an available cloud backup. To use a computer backup, connect the iPhone to the computer that holds it and select the restore-backup option in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Choose the relevant backup by its date.

If no backup exists, set up the iPhone as a new device and create a new passcode. Information already syncing through services such as iCloud may return after you sign in, but an erase cannot recover data that existed only on the phone.

What should you do if the iPhone 8 reset does not work?

If the recovery-mode screen does not appear, reconnect the cable and repeat Volume Up, Volume Down, and side-button steps carefully. If a button does not respond, or the computer never recognizes the iPhone, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

If setup displays Activation Lock or “iPhone Locked to Owner,” the iPhone remains tied to the Apple Account that previously enabled Find My. An erase does not remove Activation Lock. Enter that account’s credentials, or ask the previous owner to remove the iPhone from their account.

Apple may provide further help when the lawful owner has valid proof of ownership. Do not give account credentials to an unofficial unlocking service, and do not use software claiming to bypass Activation Lock. There is no legitimate reset sequence that removes another owner’s Activation Lock.
