How to Hard Reset an iPhone 14 Pro Max

To hard reset an iPhone 14 Pro Max without deleting data, quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. To factory reset an iPhone 14 Pro Max, use Erase All Content and Settings, which permanently removes personal data and settings from the phone.
Hard Reset vs. Factory Reset
A hard reset commonly means a force restart: a button-controlled reboot used when the iPhone is frozen, black, or not responding normally. A force restart does not erase photos, messages, apps, accounts, or settings.
A factory reset erases the iPhone and returns it to its setup state. It removes personal data, downloaded apps, settings, payment cards stored on the device, and other local content. Data can be recovered only if it was previously backed up or remains stored in a synchronized online service.
Try a force restart first when troubleshooting an unresponsive phone. Use a factory reset only when erasing is necessary, such as before transferring the device or when a serious software problem cannot be resolved another way.
How to Force Restart an iPhone 14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro Max hard reset buttons must be pressed in the correct order. Do not hold both volume buttons together.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the side button.
- Keep holding the side button when the screen turns black. Release it when the Apple logo appears.
The Apple logo confirms that the force restart has begun. It may take longer than ten seconds to appear. If the power-off slider appears, the button sequence was too slow or the side button was not started immediately after Volume Down; dismiss the slider and try again.
Before Erasing the iPhone
Before performing a factory reset on an iPhone 14 Pro Max, protect anything that cannot be replaced. Erasing cannot be undone on the phone.
- Create a current iCloud backup or an encrypted backup on a Mac or Windows PC. Confirm that the backup completed before erasing.
- Know the device passcode and Apple Account password. The Apple Account is the account used for iCloud, Find My, and other Apple services.
- Check that important photos, messages, files, authenticator information, and app data are included in the backup or stored elsewhere.
- Unpair an Apple Watch first if the iPhone is being transferred to another person.
- Decide whether to keep or erase the eSIM. Keep it when resetting the phone for continued personal use. Erase it when transferring the phone after moving service, unless the carrier gives different instructions.
Activation Lock is the security feature tied to Find My that prevents another person from activating the iPhone without the owner’s Apple Account credentials. A normal on-device erase may request the Apple Account password and turns off Find My and Activation Lock as part of the process.
How to Factory Reset the Device
Use the following official path when the screen works and the iPhone can be unlocked:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Select Erase All Content and Settings.
- Review what will be removed, then select Continue.
- Choose whether to keep or erase the eSIM when prompted.
- Enter the iPhone passcode and Apple Account password if requested.
- Confirm the erase and wait without interrupting the process.
The factory reset removes personal content and settings, reinstalls the setup state, and eventually displays the Hello screen. The iPhone can then be restored from a backup or configured as a new device. Erasing an eSIM does not cancel cellular service, and reactivating an erased eSIM may require help from the carrier.
Reset an iPhone That Will Not Respond
To reset an unresponsive iPhone 14 Pro Max, first try the force-restart sequence. If it remains stuck at the Apple logo, repeatedly restarts, shows the recovery screen, or cannot open Settings, use recovery mode with a Mac or Windows PC.
- Update the Mac, or use the current Apple Devices app on Windows. Finder is used on current Mac systems; some older computers use iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a working cable.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and locate the iPhone.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button.
- Keep holding after the Apple logo appears. Release the side button only when the screen shows a computer and cable.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first if available to reinstall iOS without erasing data. Choose Restore if updating fails or the goal is to erase the device.
Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone. If the software download takes long enough for the phone to leave recovery mode, let the download finish and then repeat the recovery-mode sequence. If the screen works but the passcode is forgotten, follow the available on-screen erase or reset option; this also erases the device.
What to Do If the Reset Does Not Work
If a hard reset of the iPhone 14 Pro Max does not work, check the basic causes before requesting service.
- Remove a case that may be blocking a button, then confirm that Volume Up, Volume Down, and the side button move normally.
- Connect the phone to a reliable charger and cable. Allow it to charge before repeating the force restart.
- Inspect the charging port and cable for visible damage or debris without inserting metal objects or applying liquid.
- Try another compatible cable or computer port if the computer does not recognize the iPhone.
- Update the computer and Apple device-management software, then retry recovery mode.
- Record any error message or code shown by the computer.
Contact official Apple Support if a required button is stuck or broken, the iPhone shows no response after charging and force restarting, recovery mode cannot be entered, or Update and Restore repeatedly fail. Hardware service may be required when the button sequence and official recovery process cannot operate.
