How to Factory Reset a Samsung Tablet

To factory reset a Samsung tablet, use Settings if you can unlock the tablet, or use Android Recovery mode if the screen is locked or Settings is unavailable. A factory reset erases personal data, apps, accounts, and settings, but it does not remove the Google or Samsung account verification that may be required afterward.
Before You Reset: What Should You Know First?
A factory reset of a Samsung tablet permanently removes locally stored photos, files, messages, downloaded apps, accounts, and customized settings. Back up anything important before continuing if the tablet still works.
- Charge the tablet sufficiently or keep it connected to power.
- Copy important photos and files to another device or an account you can access.
- Confirm that you know the Google account previously used on the tablet and its password.
- Confirm your Samsung account details if the tablet is linked to a Samsung account.
- Remove a memory card if you do not want it involved in the reset process.
Factory Reset Protection, or FRP, is an Android security feature that may require the Google account previously linked to the tablet before setup can continue. A reset does not bypass this protection. If you recently changed the account password, account verification may not work immediately because of a security delay.
How Do I Factory Reset a Samsung Tablet from Settings?
Use the Settings method when the Samsung tablet is unlocked, responsive, and accessible. Menu wording can differ slightly by tablet model and software version.
- Open the Settings app.
- Select General management.
- Select Reset.
- Select Factory data reset.
- Review the accounts and information that will be removed.
- Scroll down and select Reset or Delete all.
- Enter the current PIN, password, or pattern if requested.
- Confirm the reset and wait while the tablet restarts.
Do not force the tablet off while it is erasing data. The first restart can take longer than a normal restart.
How Do I Factory Reset a Samsung Tablet Using Recovery Mode?
Android Recovery is a separate startup menu used for maintenance when the normal Settings app cannot be reached. The exact button combination varies by Samsung tablet model.
- Turn the tablet completely off. If it is frozen, hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until it restarts, then try to power it off.
- For a tablet without a physical Home button, press and hold Power and Volume Up. On some models, the tablet must also be connected by USB to a computer or another powered device before Recovery opens.
- For an older tablet with a physical Home button, press and hold Power, Volume Up, and Home.
- Release the buttons when the Samsung logo or Recovery screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press the Power button to select it.
- Highlight Factory data reset or the confirmation option and press Power.
- When the wipe finishes, select Reboot system now.
The touchscreen may not work inside Recovery. Use the volume buttons to move through the menu and the Power button to confirm a choice. Choose only the factory-reset option; other Recovery commands are intended for different troubleshooting tasks.
How Do I Factory Reset a Samsung Tablet Without the Password?
To factory reset a Samsung tablet without the lock-screen password, use Recovery mode or Samsung’s remote device-finding service. Both methods erase data, and neither removes Factory Reset Protection.
Recovery mode is the usual choice when you physically have the tablet but cannot unlock it. Follow the hardware-button steps in the Recovery section, select Wipe data/factory reset, and reboot the tablet.
A remote erase may be available through Samsung Find My Mobile, now provided through Samsung’s device-finding service, if the tablet was already linked to your Samsung account and can connect to the internet.
- On another phone or computer, open {site} and locate Samsung’s device-finding option.
- Sign in with the same Samsung account linked to the tablet.
- Select the correct tablet from your registered devices.
- Select Erase data and complete any identity checks shown.
- Leave the tablet powered on and connected so it can receive the erase command.
If the tablet is offline, the command cannot reach it until it reconnects. Remote controls also may be unavailable if the required account or device settings were not enabled beforehand.
After either method, expect a request for the Google account that was previously synchronized with the tablet. Entering a different account will not satisfy FRP. Do not use third-party unlocking offers or attempt to bypass verification on a device you do not own.
What Happens After a Samsung Tablet Factory Reset?
After a factory reset, the Samsung tablet starts with the setup wizard. You will choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, accept required terms, and sign in to accounts.
If Factory Reset Protection is active, setup will ask for a Google account previously used on the tablet. Some devices may also request the associated Samsung account. Complete account recovery from another device if you have forgotten those credentials.
Once verification succeeds, you can restore an available backup or set up the tablet as a new device. Files that were stored only on the tablet cannot normally be recovered after the reset.
What Should I Do If the Samsung Tablet Reset Does Not Work?
If Recovery does not open, verify that the tablet is fully powered off, try the model-appropriate button combination again, and connect it by USB if required. Remove a protective case if it prevents a button from being pressed fully.
If the tablet repeatedly returns to the Samsung logo, does not respond to buttons, or reports an error during the wipe, stop repeating the reset. A power, button, storage, or software problem may require Samsung support.
Open {site}, select Support, and look for Contact Us or tablet support options. Have the tablet’s model number, serial number, proof of ownership, and a description of the failed steps ready. Samsung support can confirm the correct Recovery procedure for that model and explain official service options, but it cannot remove account verification without appropriate ownership and account checks.
