To factory reset a laptop, open the operating system’s recovery settings, choose whether to keep personal files, and follow the prompts to reinstall Windows or macOS. A factory reset erases settings and installed programs, and the remove-everything option also erases personal files, so back up anything important before starting.

Keep the laptop connected to power throughout the reset. The process can restart the computer several times and may take longer if the drive contains many files or the operating system must be downloaded.

What should you back up before you factory reset a laptop?

Before you factory reset a laptop, copy anything you cannot replace to external storage or a trusted cloud account. Open several copied files from the backup to confirm that they work before erasing the laptop.

  • Documents, photos, videos, music, downloads, and files saved on the desktop
  • Browser bookmarks and passwords that are not already synchronized with an account
  • Email archives, game saves, financial records, and files stored inside individual programs
  • License information, sign-in details, and installation sources for programs you plan to reinstall
  • Recovery keys for an encrypted drive, including a BitLocker recovery key when Windows indicates that one may be needed

Make a list of installed programs because a reset usually removes them. Disconnect external drives after verifying the backup so that they cannot be selected or erased accidentally.

How do you factory reset a Windows laptop?

Windows calls its built-in factory reset feature Reset this PC. The exact labels can differ slightly between Windows versions, but the Recovery page contains the reset controls.

  1. Open Settings. In Windows 11, select System, Recovery, and then Reset PC. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, Recovery, and Get started under Reset this PC.
  2. Select Keep my files if you want Windows to preserve files in your user folders while removing programs and settings.
  3. Select Remove everything if you want to erase personal files, programs, and settings. Use this option when transferring the laptop to someone else.
  4. Choose Cloud download if you have a reliable internet connection and want Windows to download fresh installation files. Choose Local reinstall to use files already stored on the laptop.
  5. Read the summary carefully, review any additional settings, and start the reset only when the listed choices are correct.

Even Keep my files is not a substitute for a backup. It removes installed programs, can reset preferences, and cannot protect files if the drive develops a problem during the process.

How do you factory reset a Mac laptop?

The simplest factory reset for a supported Mac is Erase All Content and Settings, sometimes called Erase Assistant. It signs out of services, removes personal data and settings, and returns the Mac to its setup screen without requiring a manual disk erase.

  1. Back up the Mac and connect it to power.
  2. Open System Settings, select General, then Transfer or Reset, and choose Erase All Content and Settings. On some earlier macOS versions, the option appears in the System Preferences menu.
  3. Enter the requested administrator or Apple Account information and review what will be removed.
  4. Confirm the erase and allow the Mac to restart without closing the lid or disconnecting power.

If Erase Assistant is unavailable, start the Mac in macOS Recovery. Startup steps differ between Mac models, so use the recovery instructions shown for the model rather than guessing at a key combination. In Recovery, use Disk Utility only when an erase is required, then choose Reinstall macOS. Selecting the wrong disk can erase a backup or another connected drive, so disconnect external storage first.

How do you reset a laptop without logging in?

You can reset a Windows laptop from the sign-in screen when the password is forgotten. This method does not bypass encryption or ownership checks, and Windows may request a BitLocker recovery key.

  1. On the Windows sign-in screen, select Power.
  2. Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
  3. After the recovery menu appears, select Troubleshoot and then Reset this PC.
  4. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, then follow the displayed instructions.

For a Mac, start macOS Recovery using the instructions for that Mac model, then use the available erase or reinstall options. Activation Lock may require the Apple Account previously associated with the Mac. A factory reset for a laptop does not remove legitimate account or device-ownership protections.

What happens after you factory reset your laptop?

After you factory reset your laptop, the initial setup screen asks for basics such as region, keyboard, network, and account information. If someone else will use the laptop, stop at the initial setup screen and let that person complete it.

  1. Connect to a trusted network and finish operating-system setup.
  2. Run system updates until no further important updates are offered.
  3. Reinstall programs from their official sources and sign in with the appropriate accounts.
  4. Reconnect the backup and restore only the files you need.
  5. Check documents, photos, sound, camera, Wi-Fi, and other important features before deleting any backup copy.

Some Windows resets reinstall standard Windows rather than every program originally supplied by the laptop manufacturer. Keep the backup until the laptop is fully working and all required files have been checked.

What should you do if the laptop reset will not start or finish?

If a factory reset laptop process appears stuck, keep the laptop connected to power and allow time for disk checks, downloads, and restarts. Do not force it off merely because the progress percentage pauses for a while.

  • If the reset returns an error before making changes, restart the laptop, disconnect nonessential accessories, confirm that the drive has free space, and try Recovery again.
  • If Windows says required files are missing or damaged, use official Windows installation or recovery media created on another working computer.
  • If macOS Recovery cannot reinstall the system, check the internet connection and try Recovery again before erasing any additional disk or volume.
  • If the laptop repeatedly shuts down, reports drive errors, cannot detect its internal storage, or remains trapped in a restart loop, contact the laptop manufacturer’s official support.

Use recovery media made for the correct operating system and device architecture. Avoid third-party reset or password-unlock tools, especially when the laptop contains sensitive information.
