You can factory reset an iPad without a passcode or computer by using the locked iPad’s Forgot Passcode? option or by erasing it through Find My on another device. Recovery mode cannot complete a reset using the iPad alone; Apple’s recovery-mode process requires a Mac or Windows PC.

When can you factory reset an iPad without a passcode or computer?

The on-device reset method applies when the iPad runs iPadOS 15.2 or later, Find My was enabled before the lockout, and the iPad can connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service. On iPadOS 17 or later, look for Forgot Passcode? after the iPad displays an unavailable message. On iPadOS 15.2 or 16, an Erase iPad option may appear instead.

You can also erase the locked iPad from another Apple device signed in to the same Apple Account, or through Find My in a browser. Apple Account is the current name for what was previously called an Apple ID.

If neither the on-device erase option nor Find My is available, a factory reset requires a computer or help from Apple. There is no button-only procedure that completes a recovery-mode restore without a computer.

What do you need before resetting a locked iPad?

  • An active Wi-Fi or cellular connection on the locked iPad for the on-device method.
  • The Apple Account email address or phone number associated with the iPad.
  • The password for that Apple Account.
  • Enough battery power to finish the erase and restart. Connect the iPad to power if possible.
  • An existing iCloud or computer backup if you want to restore personal data afterward.

A factory reset permanently erases the iPad’s local content and settings, including the forgotten passcode. Do not start the erase expecting to recover files that exist only on the locked iPad.

How do you reset an iPad using Find My on another device?

Find My can remotely erase an iPad if Find My was already enabled on that iPad. The erase begins when the iPad is online; if it is offline, the request remains pending until it connects.

  1. On another Apple device, open the Find My app. If using a browser, open iCloud.com and choose Find My or Find Devices.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the locked iPad. If the other device belongs to someone else, avoid saving your sign-in information.
  3. Open the Devices list and select the locked iPad. Check the device name and location carefully if several iPads appear.
  4. Choose Erase This Device or Erase iPad.
  5. Review the warning, continue through the confirmation prompts, and enter the Apple Account password if requested.
  6. Keep the iPad connected to power and the internet. After the erase completes, it restarts at the setup screen.

Removing the iPad from the Find My device list is different from erasing it. Do not remove it from the account when the goal is simply to reset and continue using it.

How do you erase a locked iPad from the iPad itself?

The no-computer procedure uses the Security Lockout screen, not recovery mode. It does not require a model-specific button sequence.

  1. At the Lock Screen, enter a passcode until the iPad displays an unavailable message and offers a reset option.
  2. On iPadOS 17 or later, tap Forgot Passcode?, then tap Start iPad Reset. On iPadOS 15.2 or 16, tap Erase iPad when that option appears.
  3. Enter the password for the Apple Account signed in on the iPad.
  4. Tap Erase iPad to permanently remove the data, settings, and passcode.
  5. Wait for the iPad to erase and restart. Do not interrupt the process.

If Forgot Passcode? or Erase iPad never appears, confirm that the iPad has an internet connection. The option also depends on compatible iPadOS software, an Apple Account being signed in, and Find My having been enabled beforehand.

Can recovery mode reset an iPad without a computer?

No. Recovery mode can place an iPad at the computer-and-cable screen, but a Mac or Windows PC must then download the software and restore the iPad. The buttons used to reach that screen differ by model:

  • On an iPad without a Home button, quickly press and release the volume button closest to the top button, quickly press and release the other volume button, then hold the top button.
  • On an iPad with a Home button, hold the Home button and the top or side button together.

These buttons do not erase the iPad by themselves. Without a computer, use Forgot Passcode? on the iPad or Find My. If neither works, Apple directs users to a computer-based restore or assistance from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

What happens to your data when you erase a locked iPad?

Erasing removes the forgotten passcode along with apps, photos, messages, accounts, settings, and other content stored locally. There is no supported way to keep local data while removing a forgotten passcode.

Data already synchronized with iCloud may return after you sign in again. A backup can restore additional settings and content, but it must have been created before the iPad was erased.

Why does Activation Lock appear after an iPad reset?

Activation Lock is an anti-theft feature connected to Find My. After an erase, the iPad may require the Apple Account and password previously associated with it before setup can continue.

If you do not know the password, use Apple’s account-password recovery process. If the iPad remains linked to another person’s account, only that account holder can remove it through Apple’s Activation Lock process. An erase does not bypass Activation Lock.

How do you set up the iPad again after erasing it?

  1. At the Hello screen, choose a language and region.
  2. Connect the iPad to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
  3. Complete activation and enter the Apple Account credentials requested on the screen.
  4. Create a new device passcode that you can remember.
  5. Choose an available iCloud or computer backup if you have one, or set up the iPad as new.
  6. Keep the iPad connected to power and Wi-Fi while apps, photos, and other backed-up content restore.

This completes a factory reset iPad without passcode or computer when either the on-device reset option or Find My is available.
