You can erase an iPad without its passcode by putting the iPad in recovery mode and restoring it with a computer, or by using Find My from another device. Erasing the iPad removes its data and passcode, but it does not remove Activation Lock or the Apple Account previously linked to the device.

What should you know before erasing an iPad without the password?

Erasing an iPad without a password performs a full factory reset. Apps, photos, messages, settings, and other information stored only on the iPad will be deleted. Data can be recovered afterward only if an iCloud or computer backup is available.

A reset may be necessary after a forgotten passcode, too many unsuccessful passcode attempts, or when a secondhand iPad was not erased correctly. Charge the iPad, identify its model and buttons, and have a suitable cable ready before starting.

Erasing does not prove ownership. Activation Lock is an Apple security feature that ties an iPad to the Apple Account used with Find My. After the reset, the iPad may request that account and password during setup.

How do you erase an iPad with recovery mode?

The recovery-mode method requires a Mac or Windows PC. Use Finder on a Mac with a recent macOS version. On a Windows PC or an older Mac, use the Apple device-management program available on that computer, such as iTunes.

  1. Turn off the iPad. Disconnect it from the computer first if necessary.
  2. Open Finder or iTunes on the computer.
  3. Connect the cable to the computer, but do not connect the other end to the iPad yet.
  4. For an iPad without a Home button, press and hold the top button while connecting the cable to the iPad. Keep holding the top button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  5. For an iPad with a Home button, press and hold the Home button while connecting the cable to the iPad. Keep holding the Home button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  6. Select the iPad when it appears in Finder or iTunes.
  7. Choose Restore when offered Restore or Update. Some screens may describe this action as erasing or restoring the iPad. Confirm the choice and allow the computer to download the required software.
  8. Keep the iPad connected while the computer erases and restores it. When the setup screen appears, disconnect the iPad and begin setup.

If the download takes long enough that the iPad leaves recovery mode, let the download finish. Turn off the iPad and repeat the button sequence to enter recovery mode again, then choose Restore.

If the iPad does not appear, try another compatible cable or USB port. Also confirm that Finder or iTunes is open and that the correct button remains pressed until the recovery screen appears.

How do you erase an iPad with Find My without a computer?

The Find My method works only if Find My was enabled on the locked iPad and the device is connected to the internet. You must also be able to sign in to the Apple Account linked to that iPad.

  1. Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or open Find My through iCloud in a browser.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account connected to the locked iPad.
  3. Open the device list and select the correct iPad. Check its name and other identifying details carefully if several devices appear.
  4. Select Erase This Device or Erase iPad, then follow the confirmation prompts.
  5. Wait for the erase to complete. If the iPad is offline, the erase remains pending and begins when the iPad next connects to the internet.

Do not remove the iPad from the Apple Account merely to make it disappear from the device list. Removing it can affect Activation Lock. Complete the erase first and follow the account prompts shown during setup.

Why does Activation Lock remain after an iPad is erased?

Activation Lock can remain because a factory reset deletes local data but does not automatically remove the iPad from the previous owner’s Apple Account. During setup, the iPad may request the account credentials that were previously used with Find My.

If you own the account, enter its Apple Account email address or phone number and password. If the iPad belonged to someone else, ask that person to remove the iPad from their account using Find My. A secondhand device cannot be made ready for a new owner merely by erasing it.

If Activation Lock still blocks setup and the previous owner is unavailable, contact Apple through {site}. Apple may review an Activation Lock support request, but erasing the device alone does not establish ownership.

What can you do if you do not know the Apple ID or password?

Apple ID is now also called an Apple Account. If you recognize the account shown during setup but forgot its password, use Apple’s account-recovery process. Recovery may involve a trusted phone number, a trusted Apple device, an account recovery contact, or a waiting period while Apple verifies the request.

If you do not remember which account was used, check account information on another signed-in Apple device, old Apple messages or receipts, and email addresses you commonly use. The partial account hint on the Activation Lock screen may help identify it.

For an ownership review, Apple typically requires valid proof of purchase that identifies the device, such as documentation containing its serial number or other device identifier. Apple decides whether the submitted information is sufficient. There is no supported procedure for bypassing Activation Lock without the linked account or acceptable ownership proof.

How do you set up an iPad after the reset?

  1. Turn on the erased iPad and choose a language and region.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi so the iPad can activate.
  3. Enter the linked Apple Account credentials if Activation Lock appears.
  4. Choose to set up the iPad as new or restore an available iCloud or computer backup.
  5. Create a new passcode that you can remember but other people cannot easily guess.
  6. Finish the remaining setup prompts and allow restored apps and data time to download.

If no backup exists, information deleted during the erase cannot be restored from the iPad. After setup, confirm that backups are enabled and store account-recovery details somewhere secure.
