What is a virtual gift card?
A virtual gift card is a digital card used instead of a physical plastic card. It is usually delivered by email or shown inside the issuer’s account area. The card may include a card number, an expiration date, a security code, or a barcode.
Some virtual gift cards work only with one retailer. Others use a payment network and may be accepted by more businesses. Before trying to pay, check the issuer’s terms for where the card can be used and whether online, in-store, or mobile payments are allowed.
To use a virtual gift card online, enter its details in the payment form as you would enter a payment card. If the form asks for a billing address, use the address registered with the card. A mismatch can cause the payment to be declined.
How to choose and use virtual gift cards online
The best virtual gift card depends on how the recipient plans to use it. Before selecting one, review:
- Which stores or websites accept it
- Whether it can be added to a mobile wallet
- When it expires, if applicable
- Whether the issuer allows split payments
- How lost card details can be recovered
Buy or activate a virtual gift only through the issuer or a retailer you trust. Save the delivery email and take a secure note of the card details. Do not send the number or security code through public messages.
If a virtual gift card is declined, confirm that it is activated, has enough available balance, and is accepted by that merchant. Check every digit and any requested name or address. If the purchase is larger than the available balance, ask whether the merchant accepts split payments. Contact the card issuer if the balance is correct but repeated attempts still fail.
How to check a virtual gift card balance
Have the card number and any security code or PIN ready. Open the issuer’s verified balance-check page from the company’s official website, or use the contact method printed in the delivery email. Enter only the details requested by the issuer.
The displayed balance may not immediately reflect a recent purchase, reversal, or pending authorization. Wait for the transaction to finish processing, then check again. Keep receipts until the balance updates.
If the balance page rejects the card, look for typing mistakes and confirm that you are using the card issuer’s page rather than the store where you tried to spend it. Support may ask for the card number, activation details, and information about the failed transaction. Never send a full card number in an unsecured message.
Virtual gift cards and a mobile payment platform
A mobile payment platform lets a customer approve a payment from a phone or other mobile device. A virtual gift card may work there only if both the card issuer and the platform allow it.
When adding a card, enter the card details exactly as issued and complete any verification step. If it cannot be added, use the card directly at checkout where permitted. A declined mobile payment does not always mean the card has no balance; the merchant, issuer, or platform may not support that type of virtual card.
