How to Change Your Reddit Password
Before You Change Your Reddit Password
If you know your current password and can sign in, you can change your Reddit password from account settings. Have your current password ready, along with the new password you want to use.
If you have forgotten the current password, use the password-reset process instead. Reddit sends the reset message to the verified email address connected to the account. You may enter either your username or that email address when requesting it.
Accounts created through Google, Apple, or a phone number may use a different sign-in method. Sign in with the method originally used, then check the account settings to see whether a password has been added.
How to Change Your Password on the Reddit Website
To change a password on Reddit while signed in through a desktop or mobile browser:
- Open {site} and sign in to the correct account.
- Select your avatar or profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then open the Account or General section.
- Find the password setting and select Change Password.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter the new password, confirm it, and save the change.
If the setting is hard to find on a small screen, open the browser menu and request the desktop version of the page. Check the username shown in account settings before saving if you use more than one Reddit account.
How to Change Your Password in the Reddit App
The current iOS and Android apps place account controls under Settings. To change your password in the Reddit app:
- Open the app and make sure you are using the intended account.
- Tap your avatar at the bottom right to open your profile.
- Open the menu near the upper-right corner and tap Settings.
- Select your username under Account Settings.
- Tap Change password or Update password.
- Enter the current password, enter the new password twice, and confirm the change.
Menu wording can differ slightly by app version. If there is no password option, update the app or complete the change in a browser. An account created with Google, Apple, or a phone number may first require you to add a password through the available account prompt.
How to Reset a Forgotten Reddit Password
If you cannot supply the current password, reset it from the sign-in screen:
- Open {site} or the Reddit app and go to the login screen.
- Select Forgot password beneath the sign-in fields.
- Enter your Reddit username or the email address connected to the account.
- Select Reset Password.
- Open the message Reddit sends and select its reset button.
- If several usernames use that email address, choose the correct account.
- Enter and confirm the new password, then continue.
Reset links are time-sensitive. Request a fresh message if the link has expired or has already been used. If no message appears, check spam, junk, trash, and filtered folders. Confirm that you entered the verified address associated with that username. Also check whether your email provider blocked the message.
If you used Apple’s Hide My Email when creating the account, the associated address may be a private relay address. Entering the username instead can help Reddit direct the reset request to the address on file.
Changing a Reddit Password Without Email Access
How to change a Reddit password without email access depends on whether you know the current password. If you are signed in and know it, update the email address in Account Settings first, then change the password normally.
If the account has no email address but you remain signed in and know the password, add and verify an accessible address before starting a reset. You can also check a trusted browser or device password manager for saved credentials.
If you cannot access the associated email address and do not know the password, Reddit says it cannot reset the password or identify the address for you because it cannot verify account ownership. Being signed in on one device does not bypass that recovery limitation. If an intruder changed the address, follow the reversal instructions in the security message Reddit sent to the original address or use Reddit’s official support request for a compromised account.
What to Do After Changing Your Password
A password reset signs the account out on all devices. Sign in again with the new password wherever you use Reddit. A regular password change may not remove every session, so review account activity and use the option to log out other sessions if necessary.
- Replace the old saved password in your browser or password manager.
- Check the account email address and confirm that it is current and verified.
- Review authorized apps and remove any connection you do not recognize.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and store its backup codes safely.
- Use a unique password that is not used for another account.
Changing the Reddit password does not automatically change a Google or Apple password. Manage those credentials with the provider that controls them.
Troubleshooting Password Changes
Current password is rejected: Check for typing errors and make sure you selected the correct Reddit account. If you cannot confirm the old password, use Forgot password.
Reset link has expired: Return to the login screen and request a new message. Use only the newest reset link.
Reset message does not arrive: Check filtered folders, confirm the username or associated email address, and make sure the mailbox can receive messages.
No access to the email account: If you know the current password and can sign in, update the email first. Without both the password and email access, the normal recovery process is unavailable.
New password appears not to work: Try signing in with the username rather than the email address. Remove an outdated saved credential, restart the app, or use a private browser window.
App change does not appear to take effect: Force-close and reopen the app, install the current version, or test the new password in a browser.
