How to Change Your Phone Number on Amazon

Updated 2026-08-23 ยท 977 words

The phone number on an Amazon account is changed in the account settings, in the section called Login and Security. That section holds the name, email address, phone number, and password for the account, and each one is edited separately.

Amazon treats a phone number change as a security event, not a preference change. Expect to prove you control the account and, in most cases, both the old number and the new one.

What do I need before I change my Amazon phone number?

  • The new phone, switched on and able to receive a text message right now.
  • Your Amazon password. Amazon usually asks for it again on the Login and Security page even though you are already signed in.
  • Access to your account email, since a confirmation or code may go there.
  • The old phone, if you still have it. It makes the change straightforward.
  • Your two-step verification method, if you use one, whether that is an authenticator app or a backup number.

Do this while you still have the old number working. Changing it before you lose the old line is a five-minute job; changing it afterwards can take days.

How do I change the phone number on the Amazon website?

  1. Sign in to your account at the company’s official website.
  2. Open Your Account from the account menu.
  3. Select Login & Security.
  4. Enter your password again if prompted.
  5. Find the Mobile phone number row and select Edit.
  6. Enter the new number with the correct country code.
  7. Enter the verification code Amazon sends to the new number.
  8. Confirm, and check that the row now shows the new number before you leave the page.

That last check matters. If you close the page during verification, the change does not save, and the account keeps the old number without telling you.

How do I change my Amazon phone number in the app?

  1. Open the Amazon shopping app and make sure you are signed in to the right account.
  2. Open the menu and go to Your Account.
  3. Select Login & Security.
  4. Enter your password when asked.
  5. Select Edit next to the phone number.
  6. Enter the new number and the verification code sent to it.

This must be done in the app or in a browser signed in to your account, not through any link in an email or text. A message telling you to update your Amazon phone number is a common phishing approach, and the safe habit is to always start from the app or from a page you opened yourself.

What if I no longer have the old phone number?

This is the hard case, because the old number is often how Amazon confirms you are the account owner. Try these in order.

  1. Sign in first. If you know your email and password, you may be able to change the number without touching the old one.
  2. If Amazon insists on sending a code to the old number, look for an option to use a different verification method, such as your email or an authenticator app.
  3. If two-step verification is on and tied to the old number, use a backup method you set up earlier.
  4. If nothing works, contact Amazon customer service and explain that you have lost access to the registered number.

Amazon will ask for information only the account owner would know. Have order history details ready, such as recent orders, the delivery addresses on file, and the card type ending digits shown in your account. Do not send full card details to anyone.

Why does Amazon ask for verification more than once?

Two-step verification is a security setting that requires a code in addition to your password when you sign in. If you have it enabled, changing your phone number can involve two separate checks: one to prove you are signed in legitimately, and one to prove you control the new number.

If your two-step verification is tied to the number you are replacing, update the two-step settings as well. Otherwise you change the number successfully and then find yourself unable to sign in next time, because the codes still go to a line you no longer have.

Check your two-step settings on the same Login and Security page immediately after changing the number, while you are already there.

Does changing my Amazon phone number change my delivery contact number?

No, and this catches people out. The account phone number in Login and Security is used for sign-in and security. Delivery addresses hold their own contact numbers, and delivery drivers use those.

If you want couriers to reach you on the new number, open your address book in the account settings and update the phone number stored on each delivery address separately. An old number left on an address is a common reason a delivery attempt fails.

Why does Amazon keep asking me to sign in again?

Login and Security is treated as a sensitive area, so Amazon re-confirms your password before showing it and sometimes again before saving a change. That is normal.

If you are stuck in a loop where signing in returns you to the sign-in page, try a different browser, clear the cookies for the site, or use the app instead. If it happens only after entering a code, the code may have expired; request a new one and enter it promptly.

When should I contact Amazon customer service?

Contact Amazon when you cannot receive codes at either the old or the new number, when the account shows a phone number you do not recognize, when the change does not save after several attempts, or when you are locked out entirely.

A number you do not recognize on your account deserves immediate attention. Change your password first if you can still sign in, review your two-step settings, and then contact customer service to report it.
