How to Change Your iCloud Password

To change your iCloud password, change the password for the Apple Account connected to iCloud. On a trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open Sign-In & Security in Settings or System Settings and select Change Password.
The same process applies whether you are asking “how do I change my iCloud password?” or “how can I change the password for iCloud?” Apple uses one password for iCloud and other services connected to the same Apple Account.
What do you need before changing your iCloud password?
An Apple Account is the account used to sign in to iCloud and other Apple services; it was previously called an Apple ID. Changing the Apple Account password therefore changes the password used for iCloud.
Before you change your iCloud password, have as many of these items available as possible:
- A trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is already signed in to the Apple Account.
- The device passcode or Mac login password.
- Access to a trusted phone number associated with the account.
- The current Apple Account password when changing it on the web.
- Access to the account’s email address if Apple requests additional verification.
A trusted device is a device already signed in to the Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Apple can use that device to confirm your identity.
How do you change your iCloud password on an iPhone or iPad?
Changing an iCloud password on a trusted iPhone or iPad normally requires the device passcode. Use the device that is already signed in to the correct Apple Account.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Enter the iPhone or iPad passcode if requested.
- Enter the new password, enter it again to confirm, and follow the prompts to finish.
If the name shown in Settings is not yours, stop before making changes. Confirm that you are using the device and Apple Account you intend to update.
How do you change your iCloud password on a Mac?
To change the password for iCloud on a trusted Mac, use the Apple Account controls in System Settings. The Mac may ask for its login password to verify your identity.
- Choose the Apple menu and open System Settings.
- Select your name at the top of the sidebar.
- Select Sign-In & Security.
- Select Change Password.
- Enter the Mac login password if prompted.
- Create and confirm the new Apple Account password, then complete any verification shown.
On an older macOS version, the labels or layout may differ. Look for the Apple Account or Apple ID section and then the password and security controls.
How can you change your iCloud password on the web?
You can change an iCloud password online through Apple’s official Apple Account website. Avoid search advertisements and unofficial reset pages that ask for account credentials.
- Open {site} and locate the Apple Account sign-in area.
- Check that the page belongs to Apple before entering any information.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for iCloud.
- Complete two-factor authentication if requested.
- Open Sign-In and Security, then select Password.
- Enter the current password, create a new password, and confirm the change.
If you cannot provide the current password or complete verification, use the forgotten-password process instead of repeatedly trying to sign in.
What should you do if you forgot your current iCloud password?
If the current iCloud password is unavailable, reset the Apple Account password from a trusted device or begin recovery through Apple’s official reset process.
- On a trusted iPhone or iPad: Open Settings, tap your name, select Sign-In & Security, and tap Change Password. Follow the identity checks shown.
- On a trusted Mac: Open System Settings, select your name, choose Sign-In & Security, and select Change Password.
- Without a trusted device: Start the password-reset process from the Apple Account sign-in page on {site}. Follow only the instructions supplied by Apple.
- Using a borrowed Apple device: Apple’s support app may offer a reset option for a different Apple Account. Do not save your credentials on the borrowed device.
If you cannot access a trusted phone number, select the option indicating that the number or device is unavailable. Apple may offer account recovery, which uses additional checks before access can be restored. Provide information accurately and monitor the contact method Apple identifies during the process.
What should you do after changing your iCloud password?
After you change your iCloud password, some devices, browsers, and Apple services may ask you to sign in again. Enter the new password only in Apple settings, Apple apps, or a verified Apple sign-in page.
- Respond to sign-in prompts on devices you recognize.
- Open the Apple Account device list and remove devices you no longer own or recognize.
- Review trusted phone numbers and account email details.
- Confirm that two-factor authentication and recovery information are correct.
- Update any password manager entry so the old password is not filled automatically.
If an unfamiliar device or account change appears, secure the Apple Account immediately and contact official Apple Support.
What can you do when an iCloud password change does not work?
Verification failures often result from an incorrect device passcode, an unavailable trusted number, a weak network connection, or account information that does not match Apple’s records.
- No verification code arrives: Check the trusted device for an approval prompt, confirm the trusted phone number, and use the option to request another code when available.
- No trusted device is available: Use Apple’s official forgotten-password process and choose the option explaining that the trusted device or number cannot be accessed.
- The new password is rejected: Follow the password requirements displayed by Apple and avoid reusing a password the account will not accept.
- Account recovery is pending: Follow Apple’s instructions and avoid restarting recovery unless Apple directs you to do so, because repeated changes may interfere with the request.
- Verification still fails: Contact official Apple Support through Apple’s verified support options. Apple Support can explain the approved recovery process but cannot bypass account security.
