How to Change Your Apple Password
To change your Apple password, use Sign-In & Security on a trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or sign in through {site}. If you do not know the current password, select the forgot-password option and complete Apple’s identity checks.
Apple ID is now called Apple Account, but your existing email address or phone number and password still work. The steps below change the password for the same account used with iCloud, the App Store, iTunes, and other Apple services.
Where do you change your Apple password?
You can change your Apple Account password in any of these official places:
- On an iPhone or iPad: Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password.
- On a Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password.
- In a browser: open {site}, sign in, choose Sign-In and Security, and then choose Password.
A trusted device is an Apple device where you are already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Using a trusted device is usually the most direct way to change an Apple account password because the device helps Apple confirm that the account belongs to you.
How do you change your Apple password on an iPhone or iPad?
If you are already signed in on the device, you can change your Apple password without first entering the old Apple Account password. You may need the passcode used to unlock the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Enter the device passcode if requested.
- Enter the new password, enter it again to verify it, and follow the remaining onscreen instructions.
If Stolen Device Protection applies, Apple may require a security delay before allowing a sensitive account change. Follow the message on the phone rather than repeatedly starting the process again.
How do you change your Apple password from a Mac or PC?
On a Mac where you are already signed in, change the Apple Account password through System Settings:
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Click your name at the top of the sidebar.
- Click Sign-In & Security.
- Click Change Password.
- Enter the password used to unlock the Mac.
- Enter and confirm the new Apple Account password, then follow the onscreen instructions.
On a Windows PC, or on a Mac where you are not signed in, use a browser:
- Open the official Apple Account website.
- Sign in with the email address or phone number connected to the account.
- Complete two-factor authentication if requested.
- Select Sign-In and Security, then Password.
- Enter the requested information and save the new password.
Apple may redirect the browser process to a trusted device when one is available. This is part of Apple’s identity verification, not an error.
How do you change your password from the App Store or iTunes?
The App Store or iTunes may display an Apple Account password prompt when you sign in or access account information. That prompt is mainly for authentication; it is not always a password-change screen.
- If you know the current password, finish signing in and then change the password through the device’s Sign-In & Security settings.
- If the prompt offers Forgot Password, select it and follow Apple’s reset instructions.
- In iTunes on a PC, choose Account > View My Account and sign in. Select the option to edit the account on Apple’s account website, then open Sign-In and Security and choose Password.
- After changing the password, return to the App Store or iTunes and enter the new password if another sign-in prompt appears.
Do not confuse the Apple Account password with an iPhone passcode or a Mac login password. A device passcode or Mac login password may be requested to verify you, but changing it does not by itself change the Apple Account password.
What do you do if you cannot sign in to change your Apple password?
If the current password is unknown, use Apple’s official reset flow instead of trying to change it from an authenticated account page.
- On a trusted iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password and follow the prompts.
- At an Apple sign-in screen, select Forgot Password or Forgot Apple Account or Password.
- Enter the email address or phone number used for the Apple Account.
- Use the trusted device, trusted phone number, device passcode, or other verification method Apple presents.
- Create a new password after Apple confirms your identity.
If none of the available verification methods works, Apple may start account recovery. Recovery can involve a waiting period, and Apple Support cannot shorten that security process. Keep access to the trusted phone number and follow only the status instructions Apple provides.
What are the Apple password requirements?
To avoid having the change rejected, an Apple Account password must meet Apple’s official rules:
- Use at least eight characters.
- Include both letters and numbers.
- Include uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Do not use three or more identical characters in a row.
- Do not use a commonly used password.
Apple recommends making the password longer and adding punctuation for greater security. Use a password that is different from passwords used for email, banking, or other accounts.
How do you get Apple Support if you still cannot change the password?
Use the official Apple Support page and choose Apple Account, Password, or Sign-In as the issue. Apple may offer guided online help or available contact choices after you describe the problem.
Have the Apple Account email address or phone number, a trusted device, and access to the trusted phone number ready. Apple Support can explain the verification steps and help identify the correct recovery route, but support representatives cannot bypass identity checks or reveal an existing password.
