How to Change Your Apple ID Password

Updated 2026-08-21 · 986 words

To change your Apple ID password, open your Apple Account security settings on a signed-in device or sign in through Apple’s account website. If you cannot sign in, start the password-reset or account-recovery process instead.

Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account, but your existing sign-in email address or phone number and password still work.

What do you need before changing your Apple ID password?

Before you change your Apple ID password, have at least one way to confirm that the account belongs to you. A trusted device is an Apple device already signed in to your account with two-factor authentication.

  • A signed-in iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or access to a web browser
  • Your current Apple ID password, if you know it
  • The passcode for your iPhone or iPad, or the password used to unlock your Mac
  • Access to a trusted device or trusted phone number that can receive a verification code
  • Access to your account email or recovery contact, if Apple asks you to use it

Create a strong password that you do not use for another account. If you are changing the password because someone else may know it, review your trusted phone numbers and signed-in devices afterward.

How do you change your Apple ID password on an iPhone or iPad?

If you are already signed in, your iPhone or iPad can verify your identity with its device passcode. You may not need to enter the current Apple ID password.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Sign-In & Security.
  4. Tap Change Password.
  5. Enter the passcode used to unlock the iPhone or iPad when requested.
  6. Enter the new password, confirm it, and follow the remaining prompts.

Two-factor confirmation may appear when Apple needs another identity check. Approve the prompt on a trusted device or enter the verification code sent to a trusted phone number. If Stolen Device Protection applies, the device may require a security delay before allowing a critical account change.

How do you change your Apple ID password on a Mac?

On a Mac, the area is called System Settings rather than Settings. The Mac normally asks for the password used to unlock the computer before it allows an Apple Account password change.

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Click your name in the sidebar.
  4. Click Sign-In & Security.
  5. Click Change Password.
  6. Enter the password used to unlock the Mac, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If your name is not shown, the Mac may not be signed in to your Apple Account. Use the sign-in option and select the forgotten-password choice if you do not know the password.

How can you change your Apple ID password from a web browser?

Use the browser method when no signed-in Apple device is available. Apple may still redirect you to a trusted device when one is connected to the account.

  1. Open {site} and find the Apple Account sign-in area.
  2. Sign in with the email address or phone number associated with your Apple Account and your current password.
  3. Complete two-factor authentication if prompted.
  4. Open Sign-In and Security.
  5. Select Password.
  6. Enter the requested information and save the new password.

If you cannot complete sign-in, do not keep guessing. Select the forgotten-password option and begin a reset.

What should you do if you forgot your Apple ID password?

A password reset replaces a forgotten password after Apple verifies your identity. Start on a trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac when possible because the device passcode or Mac login password can help confirm ownership.

  1. Open the same Sign-In & Security area on a trusted device and select Change Password.
  2. If you are not signed in, choose the forgotten-password option on the Apple Account sign-in screen.
  3. Enter the email address or phone number used for the Apple Account.
  4. Follow the prompts to confirm a trusted phone number, device passcode, verification code, or other requested account details.
  5. Create a new password when Apple confirms your identity.

If the available checks are not enough, Apple may offer account recovery. Account recovery can involve additional confirmation and a waiting period. Keep access to the trusted phone number you supplied, and follow Apple’s status instructions; completion is not guaranteed within a particular time.

How do you change both your Apple ID and password?

The Apple ID sign-in name and its password are changed separately. Changing the password does not replace the primary email address or phone number used to identify the account.

  1. Change the password under Sign-In & Security and Change Password.
  2. Return to Sign-In & Security.
  3. Select your primary email address on a device, or choose Email & Phone Numbers in the web account settings.
  4. Follow the prompts to add, select, and verify the new primary sign-in address.

An email address already associated with another Apple Account may not be available. Finish and verify one change before starting the other so that verification messages are easier to identify.

What can you do if your Apple ID password will not change?

Common blockers include an unavailable trusted phone number, a missing verification code, a locked or disabled account, a security delay, or an account that is not signed in on the device.

  • If a code does not arrive, use the prompt to request another code or choose a different trusted number when offered.
  • If you lost access to every trusted device and number, start account recovery rather than attempting repeated passwords.
  • If the account is locked, inactive, or disabled, use Apple’s official option for requesting access.
  • If a security delay appears, wait for the stated device prompt and complete the required confirmation afterward.
  • If none of the available options works, open {site}, find Apple Account Support, and describe the exact message shown on your screen.

Apple Support can explain the approved recovery choices, but support representatives cannot bypass Apple’s identity checks or disclose an existing password.
