To change the payment method for your App Store account, open Settings on an iPhone or iPad, tap your name, and select Payment & Shipping. You can edit an existing method, add a new one, change the billing order, or remove a method when your Apple Account permits it.
What should you have ready before changing an App Store payment method?
An Apple Account is the account used to sign in to the App Store and other Apple services. The payment change applies to the Apple Account shown at the top of Settings, which may not be the account you intended to update.
Before you change an App Store payment method, have the following ready:
- Your Apple Account password and access to a trusted device or trusted phone number if verification is required.
- The payment method number, expiration information, security code, cardholder name, and billing address requested on the screen.
- A billing address that matches the information held by the card issuer or other payment provider.
- Access to the payment provider’s app, text messages, or another verification method if the provider requires approval.
Payment methods available for an Apple Account depend on its country or region. App Store payment information is separate from the cards stored in Apple Pay, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.
How do you change the payment method on the App Store using an iPhone or iPad?
The official route for how to change a payment method in the App Store is through the device’s Settings app, not through an app listing or a payment request sent by someone else.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Payment & Shipping. Sign in or verify your identity if prompted.
- To update an existing method, tap that payment method and then tap Edit.
- Correct the billing details and tap Done.
If the existing method is being rejected, Apple’s documented approach is to add a different valid method first. Return to Payment & Shipping, tap Add Payment Method, enter the requested information, and tap Done. You can then change the order or try to remove the old method.
These are also the steps for common questions such as how to change payment on the App Store, how to change App Store payment details, or how to change payment for App Store subscriptions.
How do you add, remove, or reorder App Store payment methods?
Apple attempts to charge payment methods in the order displayed. The method at the top is therefore the primary option Apple tries after any applicable Apple Account balance.
- Open Settings, tap your name, and select Payment & Shipping.
- To add a method, tap Add Payment Method, complete the fields, and tap Done.
- To change payment priority, tap Edit, touch and hold a method, and drag it higher or lower in the list. Tap Done.
- To remove a method, tap Edit, select the delete control beside that method, and confirm Remove.
If Remove is unavailable or Apple refuses the change, do not assume the method can always be deleted. The account may need another valid method because of subscriptions, an unpaid balance, or Family Sharing purchase sharing.
How can you change an App Store payment method on a Mac or online?
On a Mac, App Store account settings provide an official alternative when an iPhone or iPad is unavailable.
- Open the App Store on the Mac.
- Click your name. If it is not displayed, click Sign In, enter the Apple Account details, and then click your name.
- Click Account Settings and sign in again if asked.
- Beside Payment Information, click Manage Payments.
- Click Edit beside an existing method to revise its billing information, or click Add Payment to enter another method.
- Use the displayed order controls to change payment priority. To delete an eligible method, click Edit and then Remove Payment Method.
You can also open {site}, sign in to the correct Apple Account, and manage the available payment details. Apple warns that editing payment information online can automatically remove additional methods in some countries or regions, so review the resulting list before leaving the page.
Why can’t you change or remove an App Store payment method?
If an App Store change payment method attempt fails, read the exact message on the Payment & Shipping screen. Common causes include:
- Unpaid balance: Apple may prevent removal of the current method until the outstanding order is resolved. Add or update a valid method and follow the billing prompt shown by Apple.
- Active subscriptions: An account with an ongoing subscription may need at least one payment method on file. Removing the only method may remain unavailable unless the subscription ends or another valid method is added.
- Family Sharing: When purchase sharing is active, the family organizer generally must keep a valid shared payment method. A family member may need the organizer to update it.
- Country or region mismatch: The payment type and billing address must be supported for the country or region assigned to the Apple Account.
- Rejected billing information: Check the name, billing address, expiration information, and other fields against the provider’s records. Complete any verification requested by the provider.
If the App Store will not accept correct information, contact the payment provider about a rejection or use Apple Support for an account restriction. Do not repeatedly enter guessed details.
How do you protect your Apple Account and payment details?
Only change payment details inside the Apple Settings app, the Mac App Store account settings, or the verified Apple account page reached through {site}. A message, search result, or caller asking you to use a different payment page should be treated cautiously.
- Never give another person your Apple Account password or device passcode.
- Never share a verification code sent to a trusted device or phone number.
- Do not send full card details through email, text, chat, or social media.
- Check that the Apple Account name shown in Settings is the account you intend to change.
- Review the final payment list and billing order after saving changes.
Search phrases such as “change payment method App Store,” “change payment method on App Store,” “change payment method in App Store,” “App Store change payment method,” and “change payment app store” all refer to the Apple Account payment settings described here—not to an unsolicited payment form.
