If you forgot your Apple iPad passcode, Apple does not provide a way to reveal or bypass it; regaining access normally requires erasing the iPad and setting it up again. You can recover backed-up data afterward, but data that exists only on the locked iPad may be permanently lost.

What happens when you enter the wrong iPad passcode too many times?

An iPad delays additional passcode attempts after repeated incorrect entries. The waiting periods increase as more wrong passcodes are entered, and the screen may eventually say that the iPad is unavailable or disabled.

Stop guessing if you are unsure of the passcode. More attempts can extend the lockout, and an iPad configured to erase data after repeated failed attempts may erase itself.

Face ID or Touch ID cannot replace the passcode in every situation. The iPad still requires its passcode after certain events, including a restart. If the correct passcode cannot be remembered, the supported recovery methods erase the device.

How do you erase and reset a locked iPad with Recovery Mode?

Recovery Mode is a special startup state that lets a Mac or Windows PC reinstall iPadOS when the normal iPad screen cannot be used. Have the iPad, a compatible cable, a computer with an internet connection, and the Apple Account information associated with the device ready.

  1. Turn off the iPad and disconnect it from the computer.
  2. On an iPad without a Home button, connect the cable to the computer, then connect it to the iPad while holding the top button. Keep holding the button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  3. On an iPad with a Home button, connect the cable to the computer, then connect it to the iPad while holding the Home button. Keep holding the button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
  4. Open Finder on a Mac. On a Windows PC, open the Apple Devices app or iTunes, depending on which software is installed.
  5. Select the iPad when it appears, then choose Restore. This erases the iPad and installs iPadOS again.
  6. Keep the computer connected while the required software downloads. If the iPad leaves Recovery Mode before the download finishes, let the download complete and repeat the recovery-mode steps.
  7. When the setup screen appears, disconnect the iPad and begin setup.

How do you erase a locked iPad using Find My?

If Find My was enabled before the iPad became locked, you may be able to erase it through iCloud.com or the Find My app on another Apple device. The locked iPad must eventually connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data for a remote erase request to reach it.

  1. Open Find Devices on iCloud.com, or open the Find My app on another Apple device.
  2. Sign in with the Apple Account connected to the locked iPad.
  3. Select Devices, then choose the correct iPad.
  4. Select the option to erase the iPad and confirm the request.
  5. If the iPad is offline, leave the erase request pending. Erasure should begin when the device next connects to the internet.
  6. After erasure, keep the iPad associated with your account until you are ready to activate and set it up again.

Find My cannot remotely erase an iPad if it was never enabled for that device. Use Recovery Mode instead.

Will resetting a forgotten iPad passcode erase your data?

Every supported reset method that clears a forgotten screen passcode also erases the iPad. Whether personal data returns depends on what was synchronized or backed up before the reset.

  • An iCloud backup can restore many settings, app data, and the saved device configuration from the backup date.
  • A backup stored on a Mac or PC can restore the information included when that backup was created.
  • Information already synchronized with iCloud may return after you sign in and enable the corresponding feature.
  • Data created after the latest backup may be missing.
  • Files stored only on the locked iPad, with no backup or synchronization, cannot normally be recovered after erasure.

Do not assume that a backup exists. If possible, check another signed-in Apple device or the computer previously used for backups before erasing the iPad.

How do you restore an iPad from a backup after the reset?

After the passcode is cleared, the iPad displays its setup screens. Connect it to a reliable network and continue until the Apps and Data options appear.

  1. Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup or from a Mac or PC.
  2. For iCloud, sign in with the same Apple Account and select the most appropriate available backup by its date and device name.
  3. For a computer backup, connect the iPad to the computer that holds the backup, open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, select the iPad, and choose Restore Backup.
  4. Enter the backup password if the computer backup was encrypted.
  5. Keep the iPad connected to power and the network while content continues downloading.

Activation Lock may request the Apple Account and password previously used with Find My. Activation Lock is Apple’s theft-deterrence feature that prevents an erased device from being activated by someone else.

How do you set a new iPad passcode and prevent future data loss?

Create a new passcode during setup and record it in a secure password manager or another protected place. Avoid an easy-to-guess code and do not reuse a code that other people know.

  1. Open Settings and select Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode.
  2. Set up Face ID or Touch ID for convenient everyday unlocking, while remembering that the passcode will still sometimes be required.
  3. In Settings, select your name, iCloud, and iCloud Backup.
  4. Turn on iCloud Backup and allow an initial backup to finish while the iPad has power and internet access.
  5. If you use computer backups, connect the iPad regularly and confirm that a recent backup appears in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.

When should you contact Apple Support about a forgotten iPad passcode?

Contact Apple Support if the iPad will not enter Recovery Mode, the computer never recognizes it, restoration repeatedly fails, or you cannot complete Activation Lock after erasing it. Support may also help with Apple Account recovery, but it cannot disclose the forgotten screen passcode or recover data that was never backed up.

Have the iPad’s serial number and proof of ownership available if requested. If the iPad belongs to an employer or school, contact that organization’s device administrator because management settings may affect recovery.
